Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Lere Oyewumi, yesterday extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected South-West Zonal Executives of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP. The election took place at the prestigious Emeritus Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, located opposite the UCH Main Gate in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The well-attended congress drew together top-tier stakeholders of the party, including His Excellency Senator Ademola Jackson Adeleke, Executive Governor of Osun State; His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde, Executive Governor of Oyo State; members of the PDP Board of Trustees; the National Working Committee ,NWC; fellow Senators; members of the House of Representatives; members of the National Executive Committee ,NEC; and dedicated delegates from across the South-West geopolitical zone. The event marks a significant stride in the ongoing effort to reposition and strengthen the PDP in the region.
Senator Oyewumi urged the newly elected zonal leadership to prioritize unity, inclusivity, and cohesion within the South-West chapter of the PDP. He emphasized that these elements are crucial to advancing the party’s electoral fortunes and ensuring its relevance in the national political landscape. “We must begin the rebuilding process from this point onward. Our strength lies in our unity, our focus, and our ability to genuinely connect with the grassroots. The South-West must once again become a formidable stronghold for the PDP”, he stated.
Senator Oyewumi noted that the significance of the congress goes beyond the election of new executives. It represents a clarion call for brotherhood, solidarity, and a renewed commitment to the ideals of the party, both at home and abroad. “We must put behind us the divisions of the past and embrace a future anchored on collaboration and purpose. The time has come to refocus our attention on building strong, efficient administrative structures that can support electoral successes. This will enable us not only to retain our current states but also to expand our reach across all six geopolitical zones of the country”, he remarked.
Senator Oyewumi also commended Governor Adeleke and Governor Makinde for their leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication to the growth of the party in the region. He described their presence and roles as “a demonstration of selflessness and deep responsibility”.
In his closing remarks, the Senator called on all PDP members to remain steadfast in upholding the party’s values and to work collectively towards achieving enduring political victories. “This congress is more than just an internal electoral exercise; it’s a foundational step toward a more vibrant and united PDP. Let us march forward with a shared sense of purpose and continue to lead with vision, capacity, and integrity”, he concluded.
