Nigeria Loses 165MW Electricity, As Rainfall, Others Disrupt Power Supply

Date:

Transmission Company of Nigeria ,TCN, has confirmed the loss of 165 megawatts ,MW, of electricity following an incident on the Ikeja-West/Osogbo 330 kV transmission line.

The disruption, which occurred on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at approximately 9:22 pm, was caused by severe windy rainfall and a trailer truck accident that resulted in the collapse of a transmission tower.

A statement issued in Abuja yesterday by the TCN’s Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, said the fault was traced to a location about 14.9 kilometres from the Ikeja-West Transmission Substation.

The company stated further that investigations revealed that Tower 528 collapsed after a trailer truck struck detached conductors on Tower 527, leading to extensive structural damage.

Also, Towers 526 and 524 were affected.

However, the affected Ikeja-West/Osogbo 330 kV transmission line is a critical high-voltage infrastructure that spans four southwestern states of Lagos State ,Ikeja-West Substation.

Ogun State ,through which the line passes; Oyo State ,Part of its transmission corridor; and Osun State ,Osogbo Substation.

The power loss primarily impacted electricity distribution companies ,DIsCos, serving those states, notably Ikeja Electric ,IE,  Eko Electricity Distribution Company ,EKEDC, and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company ,IBEDC.

To this end, TCN has disclosed that restoration efforts have commenced, adding that its engineers have mobilised to repair the affected towers and restore full transmission capacity.

It also stated that to mitigate the immediate impact, the lost 165 MW of electricity has been rerouted through alternative transmission lines to ensure continued supply to Ikeja, Eko, and Ibadan DisCos.

TCN, however, reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining a stable and efficient electricity transmission network nationwide, despite challenges such as weather-related disruptions, infrastructure damage, and vandalism.
