Three unions at Sokoto State University, SSU, have lauded Governor Ahmad Aliyu for implementing salary increment in accordance with its agreement with the federal government.

The unions – the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, gave the commendation in a statement on Saturday in Sokoto.

The statement, signed by the unions’ leaders,  Dr Saidu Abubakar, Mr Ismaila Bala and Aminu Mika’ilu respectively, called on members to reciprocate  government’s goodwill by rededicating themselves to their duties and fostering increase in service delivery.

“We commend Governor Aliyu for settling our outstanding allowances and ensuring the payment of the N70,000 national minimum wage to all categories of  workers.

“The intervention has significantly enhanced the academic growth and institutional stability of the university,” they said.

The unions  expressed appreciation to the governor for his consistent contribution and support in facilitating the accreditation of the university’s programmes by the National Universities Commission, NUC.

The unions emphasised that such interventions had bolstered the institution’s academic standard and reputation.

“We urge the governor to sustain his commitment to the welfare of  civil servants and  ensure the completion of the staff housing project which has reached  advanced stage of completion.

“Completion of the housing project will enable more staff to reside on campus, breeding a more conducive academic environment for  staff and students.

”We acknowledge the progress recorded so far by the university. The unions credit its remarkable achievements to the solid foundation laid by its founder, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

”The university is one of the few in Nigeria to commence academic activities on its permanent site, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities,” the unions said.
