Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) has ordered the immediate payment of salaries of civil servants and suspended appointees of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The approval for the payment of March salaries also covers all public servants and pensioners.
This came 24 hours after the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, threatened to take to the streets if the salaries of local government workers are not paid by the end of the month.
The State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, at a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday after the chapter’s executive council meeting, also called for the implementation of the minimum wage for local government staff, saying workers in the state are not partisan and should not suffer due to the political crisis.
However, Ibas, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt Friday by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Ibibia Worika, urged the accountant-general to remit the payment without further delay.
The two-paragraph statement sent to newsmen was titled ‘Approval for the payment of salaries for the month of March 2025.’
It reads, “In keeping with the undertaking made to the good people of Rivers State, I am pleased to inform you that the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rted)has approved the payment of salaries for all civil servants in the Rivers State Civil Service and all public servants of the Rivers State government, including pensioners and all suspended political appointees, for the month of March.
“The administrator has directed the accountant-general to ensure that payment for salaries is remitted without any delay.”
