Middle-aged women, Aisha Korau has petitioned the House of Representatives, through its Committee on Public Petitions, seeking protection from her former husband and operative of the Department of State Services, DSS, whom she accused of criminal intimidation, cyberbullying and consistent threat to her life.

In the strong worded petition dated February 20 which was addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the petitioner alleged that a DSS officer, Mohammed Garba, her former husband, had been subjecting her to a series of threats, including hacking her phone and bank accounts resulting in physical assault, as well as defamation of character.

In the petition, she narrated how she was married to Garba in 2019 and the union produced a son, Abdallah, before their divorce in 2023 under Islamic law, emphasising that Garba had issued a letter of divorce, as well as other documents he claimed to have obtained from a court of competent jurisdiction.

Despite these letters from the courts which nullified their marriage, Korau claimed that Garba has continued to harass her, alleging that in 2024, he kidnapped their child for nearly two weeks—between November 26 and December 5—and pressured her into remarrying him, threatening that she would never see their son again if she refused.

She alleged that sometime in January, Garba falsely presented himself as a judge from Katsina State while contacting her colleagues at the National Commission for Refugees, where she works. According to her, he claimed she was a fugitive and should be handed over to the authorities.

In addition to the allegations, Korau accused the DSS officer of using his security expertise to hack her phone, email and bank account, carrying out illegal transactions in her name.

“The respondent, while speaking in Hausa language, threatened to deal with me until I would be left with no child, no job, no man to marry me and a heart attack,” she wrote in her petition.

Korau, who said she has evidence to support her claims, also alleged that Garba has been following her movements with the intention of harming her.

She added that he continues to defame her by calling her a prostitute, while also falsely claiming to still be her husband.

She urged the House to intervene by investigating the matter and referring it to law enforcement agencies for proper action.

The petitioner also prayed the House to direct Garba to cease all acts of harassment and stop making attempts on her life.

As at the time of filing this report, the DSS has not issued an official response to the allegations made against its personnel.
