World Health Organisation, WHO, has expressed deep regret over the United States of America’s decision to withdraw from the organisation.
This move is seen as a significant setback for global health cooperation, as WHO plays a vital role in protecting the health and security of people worldwide, including Americans.
In a statement, WHO said the US has been a founding member since 1948 and has contributed significantly to its work, including the eradication of smallpox and the near eradication of polio.
According to the agency, it has implemented numerous reforms in recent years to enhance its accountability, cost-effectiveness and impact in countries.
“The withdrawal of the US from WHO raises concerns about the potential funding gap, as it is the organisation’s largest donor. Bill Gates Foundation is the second-largest donor, but most of its funding is dedicated to polio eradication.
Health experts have also expressed concerns about the potential consequences of the US withdrawal, including the impact on global pandemic preparedness and the fight against diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
