…..says high fuel prices have crippled Nigerians

From Damola Adeloye, Ibadan

Chieftain of New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi has expressed concern over the recent report of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Product Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, which stated that daily petrol consumption had crashed by 92 percent.

He therefore called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene by reversing the current price of petroleum products, saying the current price had made many Nigerians to abandon their vehicles.

Ajadi made the plea yesterday while reacting to the report that daily petrol consumption had crashed under President Tinubu as a result of hike in price.

It would be recalled that a report revealed that daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, in Nigeria has dropped drastically after Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

Data obtained from the latest report of NMDPRA Daily Truck Out Report for September 2024 showed that consumption as at August 20 was 4.5 million litres per day as against daily petrol consumption of 60 million in May 2023.

Ajadi called the attention of the federal government to the current situation and urged it not to turn Nigerians to ridicule, as they can no longer buy petrol despite the fact that Nigeria has abundance of crude oil.

He appealed to President Tinubu to call the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, to order and immediately revert to the old price in order not to aggravate the suffering of the masses.

NNPCL had increased petrol price to N1,025 per litre from its old price of N865.

Ajadi said the recent action was insensitive to the plight of Nigerians, noting that the increment had further aggravated the suffering that Nigerians are currently undergoing.

Ajadi, who was the governorship candidate of NNPP in Ogun State in the 2023 elections, added that the action of NNPCL is suffocating Nigerians.
