Yobe Govt Pardons 30 Inmates

Yobe State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Saleh Samanja has confirmed that the state government  granted pardon to 30 inmates from five correctional facilities. 

A statement signed by the Chief Information Officer, Yobe State Ministry of Justice, Alhassan  Mamudo, and made available to AljazirahNigeria in Damaturu, said  the pardon  was approved by  Governor Mai Mala Buni, following recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The statement also said the  attorney-general and the council visited correctional facilities in Potiskum, Nguru and Gashua to assess inmates eligible for clemency.

He said ”after thorough deliberations, a list of 30 inmates was submitted for the governor for approval”.

According to him, 14 inmates were released after being unable to pay fines, while 16 others were granted clemency from their respective sentences.

He therefore said the inmates were released from correction centres in Nguru, Potiskum, Kaduna, Jos and Gashua Local Government Areas. 

Mr Samanja emphasized that the state government remains committed to improving inmates welfare and provide skills acquisition programmes under Governor Buni’s leadership.
