National Youth Service Corps Road Safety Club, NYSC RSC, has urged parents to enlighten their children on road safety rules and regulations.

A representative of the National Youth Service Corps, Mr Azeez Sikiru made the call yesterday in Abeokuta.

The National Youth Service Corps Road Safety Club is a community development programme for corps members during their one year service and a partnership between the FRSC and NYSC.

Sikiru noted that it is important for children to understand road signs and the dangers to minimise road accidents among secondary school students and youths.

“Knowing and adhering to the road safety rules and regulations will help in averting dangers in road crash.

“Today, we are doing a sensitisation walk to tell the public and create awareness to students and road users about the regulation and safety of the roads.

“This walk is in commemoration of the  Children’s Day.

“We will be telling them how to use the road and identify road signs and their meaning.

“For example, meaning of zebra signs, the stop, the bicycle and traffic signs among others,” he said.

The Ogun Sector Commander, Mr Akinwunmi Fasakin, noted that the command had taken interest in youths which made the corps to introduce road safety education and safety club.

“The corps take so much interest in our youth and that is why we have this road safety education and road safety club.

“We are trying to sensitise the public by bringing in the youth, especially for them to be aware of the dangers on our roads.

“That is why the corpers and special marshal are doing a walk today in commemoration of the Children’s Day.

“It is for us to have the interest of the youth and to let them know that there are dangers on our roads.

“The children should be aware of traffic regulations so that they can also be agent of information to their parents.

“Apart from this, the FRSC also take sensitisation programme to secondary and primary schools and we have road safety clubs too,” he said.
