…1.9m candidates for maiden CB-WASSCE

West African Examination Council, WAEC, has revoked the licences of 574 schools nationwide, following cases of examination malpractice.

Speaking at a pre-examination press briefing on Thursday, Head of Nigeria’s National Office, HNO, Dr Josiah Dangut, noted that as a strict measure to combat malpractice, any examination centre culpable will be sanctioned by other examination bodies.

“574 schools  have had their licences revoked. So, we will not conduct examinations there. All centres that have been found culpable in examination malpractice and have been sanctioned by a particular examining body, that sanction will be upheld by other examination bodies. So, if a school is reported for malpractice, the information will be shared with other examination bodies,” he said.

Dangut noted that no fewer than 1.9 million candidates will sit for the maiden Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination, CB-WASSCE, for school candidates.

He said the examination will take place between April 24 and June 20, while candidates will be examined in 74 subjects.

“A total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have presented candidates for the examination,” he said.

The HNO disclosed that  candidates for this year increased by  158,627, adding that the National Identification Number, NIN, was made a component of the registration process in compliance with the directive of the federal government.

Dangut said the results of candidates will be released 45 days after the conduct of the last paper, while awarded certificates will be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days after the release of results.

The HNO added that from this year, two candidates will not have the same questions on each number, stressing that the variation is geared towards combating recurring examination malpractice.
