Unpaid Salaries: ASUU Embarks On Indefinite Strike

Date:

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Kaduna State University branch has declared indefinite strike beginning from February 18 over  welfare issues.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday, signed by the branch chairman of the union, Dr Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Dr Peter Waziri.

The union’s decision was approved by the National Executive Council.

According to the statement, “The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch, wishes to notify the public that its National Executive Council has approved the request of the congress of the branch to proceed on  total, comprehensive and indefinite strike with effect from today (Wednesday), February 18.

“Congress unanimously  rejected the promise from the government of Kaduna State for lack of substance, specific details and actionable timelines on the payment of the outstanding entitlements to members.”

The union stated that one of the reasons for the action was the non-payment of all withheld salaries, which include 60 percent in September 2017 and May to September 2022.

Other issues, according to the statement, are the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances from 2016 till date, payment of promotion arrears and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme supervision allowances.

The statement also noted that the Group Life Assurance and other entitlements to deceased members, non-remittance of pension from 2009 to 2019 and implementation of 25 percent and 35 percent wage award are yet to be resolved.
