Transparent Legislature, Cornerstone of Democracy – Abbas

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has stated that a transparent legislature is the cornerstone of a democratic government in any part of the world.

Abbaa stated this while declaring open, a two-day Open Week organised by the House to mark the end of the first legislative session of the 10th National Assembly in Abuja, yesterday.

He stated that the 10th National Assembly had exerted efforts to make sure that the legislative process remains inclusive and participatory.

He added that the open week would provide citizens with the opportunity for open discussion, prioritise transparency and ensure accountability by government officials.

In his speech, Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu said the open week signifies the commitment of the House to engender openness, transparency and accountability in the democratic process.

He said the inclusive approach in the legislative process adopted by the House is a model for effective governance.

Kalu added that the National Assembly had surpassed other assemblies in the introduction, reading and passage of bills.

Highpoint of the well attended event was the presentation of the scorecard of the 10th Assembly highlighting major landmark legislative interventions and laws passed by the House.
