Tragic road accident in the early hours of Saturday claimed the lives of 12 persons in Edo State.
The crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Abuja toward Benin City and an articulated truck.
Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Cyril Mathew said all the occupants of the bus were burnt to death, while the driver of the truck and his conductor escaped unhurt.
He added that the incident occurred at about 5am close to an army checkpoint at Igueoviobo community, along Benin-Auchi Road.
AljazirahNigeria gathered that the bus took off from Zuba, Federal Capital Territory, heading towards Benin, but collided with a truck heading towards Auchi, killing the whole occupants of the bus.
According to Matthew, “It happened on Saturday morning. There must have been fatigue from the driver coming from Abuja and he may have slept off and in the process, had a collision with the truck.
“They were burnt and we were able to contact the deceased relations because we were able to get the vehicle manifest.”
The sector commander advised drivers to always stop and relax for some minutes whenever they experience fatigue on the road, before continuing their journey.
