President Bola Tinubu yesterday wrote the House of Representatives seeking the confirmation of Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, COAS.
The president’s letter was read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, during yesterday’s plenary.
According to the letter, the president’s request is in line with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.
Tinubu described General Oluyede as “well-suited” for the role due to his professionalism and contributions to the military in Nigeria.
He urged the House to speedily carry out the confirmation process for the appointment of the new COAS.
It would be recalled that Oluyede was appointed Acting COAS on October 30, following the illness of his predecessor, General Taoreed Lagbaja, and was also promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General after Lagbaja’s death on November 5.
Before his appointment, he was the 56th commander of the Infantry Corps in Kaduna.
He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1992, rose to the rank of Major-General in 2020 and shared a military background with Lagbaja as coursemates in the 39th Regular Course.
