President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revised his travel itinerary, opting to visit Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, in a bid to address the escalating violence and promote peace across troubled communities in the region.
This change was disclosed in a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to Onanuga, the President’s visit to Benue is a response to the recurring crises that have resulted in substantial loss of life and property.
“The President’s visit aims to assess firsthand the recurring crisis that has claimed numerous lives and caused significant destruction,” Onanuga noted.
Initially, Tinubu was expected in Kaduna State on the same day to commission various development projects executed by the state government. However, that engagement has now been shifted to Thursday, June 19, 2025, in order to prioritize the urgent situation in Benue.
During his time in Benue, the President will meet with critical stakeholders including traditional rulers, political leaders, religious figures, community heads, and representatives of youth groups. The objective, according to the statement, is to facilitate dialogue and find long-lasting solutions to the violent conflicts plaguing the state.
“In preparation for the visit, President Tinubu has already dispatched the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, heads of intelligence agencies, the National Security Adviser, and the Chairmen of the Senate and House Defence Committees to Benue State,” the statement added.
It is expected that Tinubu will also host a town hall meeting during his stay, providing a platform for direct engagement with local leaders and citizens on the pressing issues facing their communities.
The President has been vocal in condemning the wave of attacks in Benue State and has repeatedly urged both residents and leaders to choose peace, mutual respect, and unity over division and violence.
He expressed his “heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to all those who have suffered losses as a result of the crisis,” reaffirming his commitment to restoring safety and normalcy in affected areas.
