Anambra State Police Command has commenced the enforcement of ‘Operation Velvet’  to address non-compliance with the Third Party Vehicle Insurance by motorists.

Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu made this known to journalists Tuesday, during the enforcement in Awka.

The command had on February 6 inaugurated the enforcement of insurance cover for vehicle owners  and gave one week grace for them to get their insurance cover and other relevant documents.

The command had said  it will commence ”Operation Velvet,” aimed at enforcing the directive after the expiration of the window period.

“Following the one week window period given to motorists by the police and other traffic law enforcement agencies to obtain their third-party insurance certificates, we have  started Operation Velvet,” he said.

The commissioner said the operation is aimed at addressing traffic congestion, car theft and disregard for traffic rules and regulations in the state.

Orutugu said  the initiative is part of the command’s efforts to promote responsible driving habits, provide financial protection for victims of road accidents, curb the incidence of car theft and protect motorists in the state.

According to him, the enforcement of third-party insurance policies is in line with the provisions of Section 68 of the Insurance Act 2003.

He explained that the agencies involved in the operation include the police, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Attorney-General’s Office, Motor Licensing Office, Anambra Road Maintenance Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, and other traffic agencies in the state.

“The operation is to restore order, discipline and safety on  roads, making commuting easier and more secure for residents and visitors,” Orutugu said. (NAN)
