Stakeholders Want EHCON Domiciled in Health Ministry

Stakeholders in environmental health sector have demanded that Environmental Health Council of Nigeria be domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Health instead of the Federal Ministry of Environment where it is currently situated.

The request came as top officials of Environmental Health Council of Nigeria, EHCON and West African Postgraduate College of environmental health, met with the Federal Ministry of Health with a view to begin collaboration aimed at promoting environmental health issues in the country.

Speaking to reporters after a close-door meeting at the health Ministry, the Registrar/Secretary General, West African Post Graduate College of Environmental Health, Barrister Rotimi Adeyemi, said the aim of the meeting was to draw the attention of the federal government to its request to domicile EHCON in the federal ministry of health.

He said, “We have looked forward to this for a long time, because we are concerned about environmental practice in Nigeria.

“The warehouse in Environmental health should be in this ministry. It is our hope that with this our discussion, the ministry will take the bull by the horn and ensure that environmental health is brought back to this ministry.

“They can from here deploy to the other ministries we are talking about, they can deploy environmental to water resources, to Agric but environmental health should be domiciled here, at the ministry of health, This is our concern” Adeyemi said.

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Environmental Health council of Nigeria, EHCON, Dr Yakubu Mohammed Baba, said the council is working together with other cross cutting ministries to ensure that the Nigerian environment is safeguarded for the good of public health.

He said “Nigerians should be aware that there is a new dawn because in the spirit of one health concept, the cross cutting ministries, are working together to make sure that we have safe guard the Nigerian environment to the betterment of public health and part of this engagement today is that of the spirit of integration and collaboration.

“Well I believe Nigerians are going to see new changes happening where the federal ministry of health will take the leadership, not only leadership but purposeful leadership to coordinate environmental health service in Nigeria.

The permanent secretary, Federal ministry of health, Mahmuda Mamman, acknowledged the request tabled before the ministry while he noted that the next line of action is to chart a way forward.

He added that on this note, an agreement was reached to set up a task team, which has been done, to seek, interact, discuss areas of collaboration support in order to move the environmental health issues forward.

He noted that all the cross cutting MDAs, which he mentioned as the federal ministry of health, federal ministry of Agriculture, ministry of environment and the federal ministry of water resources, will have a round table talk, work together for the management of environmental health.
