Sokoto State government has launched the distribution of 41,400 bags of free fertiliser to dry season farmers.

Speaking at the distribution ceremony yesterday in Wamakko Local Government, Governor Ahmad Aliyu said the effort was part of government’s commitment to enhance food production.

Aliyu said his administration had earlier distributed agricultural inputs  including fertiliser, agro chemicals, threshers and assorted  seedlings to farmers during the rainy season.

”Today is another set of farming inputs for dry season farmers which is aimed at enhancing economic growth and food production in the state.

“Each of the 23 local government areas will receive three trucks containing 1,800 bags of assorted fertiliser for the dry season farming.

”The idea is to ensure improved agricultural output in the state during the dry season, and by implication create job opportunities for our youths at the grassroot, ” Aliyu said.

He said in a bid to boost irrigation activities in the state, his administration had revived the Kware Irrigation scheme covering 450 hectares allocated to farmers.

Aliyu said work at the Wurno Irrigation scheme has commenced, while a contract for the rehabilitation of Lugu Dam has been awarded.

The governor expressed appreciation to development partners such as the World Bank, the Federal CARES support unit, and the National Fadama Coordination Office for their support to the state.

While urging persons entrusted with the distribution to ensure transparency, Aliyu urged beneficiaries to ensure proper utilization of the support to achieve the desired objectives.

The Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Bello Wammamo in his remarks said adequate arrangements were made to ensure that only genuine farmers have access to the commodities. (NAN)
