Sen Ekweremadu, Wife Remanded For 2 Weeks Over Alleged Attempt To Harvest Organs

By Teddy Nwanunobi, Abuja

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested, arraigned in London yesterday by the London Metropolitan Police.

The London Metropolitan Police, who confirmed the development in a statement, stated that the couple has been charged with conspiring to bring a child to the UK in order to harvest organs.

It said that charges against Ike Ekweremadu, 60, and Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, involved arranging or facilitating travel of another person, with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

Both have been remanded in custody, and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later on Thursday ,yesterday, afternoon. However, the UK Court denied him and his wife bail concerning their alleged involvement in human trafficking and organ harvesting.

The case was subsequently adjourned to Thursday, July 7.It also said that the pair was arrested following an investigation by the Force’s Specialist Crime Team.

Earlier in the day, it was not clear whether the Ekweremadu in this milieu was actually the two term Deputy President of the Senate or someone that bears the same name as him, as the initial report didn’t mention him as a senator.

This confusion by Nigerians and others stem from the recent Pandora Papers investigation, where it was observed that a certain Ekweremadu mentioned in the paper is resident in the UK.

The Metropolitan Police added that the investigation was launched, after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

“A woman and a man were charged today with conspiring to arrange the travel of a child into the UK in order to harvest organs.

“The charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team.

“[A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“[B] Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later on Thursday, yesterday.

“The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022”, the statement read in part.

No more details were available because criminal proceedings are under way.AljazirahNigeria reports that the London Metropolitan Police did not state the gender of the child when addressing the concern.

But a visa application sponsorship request letter obtained by AljazirahNigeria revealed the gender as a man, named Ukpo Nwamini David. But the person involved is in safe hands, according to the London Metropolitan Police.

“A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support”, they said.

As at the time of filing this report, it was not clear if the Ukpo Nwamini David is a child as claimed by the London Police or a man or woman because the LMP didn’t release detailed information about the alleged victim of organ harvesting.

The statement added that:

“As criminal proceedings are now under way we will be providing further details”.

It was further alleged that the accused couple, therefore, brought another person’s child to harvest their organs, and use the harvested organs to treat their child’s failing kidney.

The prosecution alleged that the lawmaker and his wife allegedly brought an underage boy, under the false pretext of giving him a good life in the UK, only to organise the harvest of the lad’s kidney, which was thwarted.

According to the prosecution, the potential beneficiary of the kidney was Ekweremadu’s daughter whose details was not disclosed, except that she has been undergoing dialysis and is critically in need of a kidney transplant.

According to the visa application by Ekweremadu, the application was addressed to the Visa Section of the British High Commission in Abuja on December 28, 2021, with subject: ‘Re: Medical Visa Application For Ukpo Nwamini David’.

“I am writing in support of the visa application made by Mr Ukpo Nwamini David who is currently undergoing medical investigations for a kidney donation to Ms Sonia Ekweremadu.

“David and Sonia will be at the Royal Free Hospital London, and I will be providing the necessary funding. I have enclosed a statement of my bank account.

“Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require additional information”, the application read.

But Ekweremadu and his wife were alleged to have provided false information about the donor’s age so as to remove the liability of consent, which in most countries ought to be 18 years and above.

Not much is known about the boy, and the prosecution did not also reveal whether the parents of the boy were in the plan and consented to the plot to remove his kidney.

But the drift of the case may require the UK to collaborate with the Federal Government to establish a case of trafficking since it is one of the charges leveled against Ekweremadu.

As at the time of filing in this report, Ekweremadu’s spokesperson, Uche Anichukwu, is yet to make an official statement on the matter.

There are indications that there is more to Ekweremadus’ drama.

The news of the arrest of Ekweremadu, and his wife has gone viral on social media, with reactions of Nigerians trailing his arrest.Recall that last month, the fifth term senator tried securing his party’s governorship candidate in Enugu but was outsmarted by the outgoing governor who influenced the decision of party delegates to deny him the ticket.

Going by this, Ike Ekweremadu will not be returning to the Senate come 2023.

In the 2019 election, Ekweremadu was accused of working against the PDP because the presidential candidate of the party for the election, Atiku Abubakar, chose Dr Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State as running mate over him.

He, however, claimed he did so because he was not consulted.

Ekweremadu was also criticised yesterday for urging the South-East zone not to vote for the presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, in the 2023 presidential election, saying it would be a waste of votes.

This statement has attracted backslashes and bad luck wishes for him by many unhappy supporters of Obi especially the youth constituency across the country.

Even the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and many sons of the zone lampooned him over what they termed unguarded and provocative utterances against the former governor of Anambra State.

The arrest in the UK will be the second time Ekweremadu will be having issues in Europe.

He was attacked in Europe sometime in 2021 by a mob suspected to be angry Nigerians while attending a cultural event in Germany. In the one-minute video that surfaced online, the mob chanted ‘go back’ while trying to deny Ekweremadu entry.

The lawmaker had initially retreated but later turned back towards the entrance of the venue. In reaction, the men furiously dragged Ekweremadu out of the venue, ripping his clothes.

Below are some of the tweets from Nigerians: Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:@Nedunaija: The Ike Ekweremadu who promised PDP my vote and the votes of all South Easterners might actually be in jail when the election (is) held in Nigeria. Inside life.@PeterObiPikin: Mbaka attacked Peter Obi and lost his Adoration Ground. Wike attacked Peter Obi and lost the Primaries. This Peter Obi movement has become spiritual.@ManLikeIcey: Ike Ekweremadu and his wife have been charged with conspiring to bring child to UK to harvest organs, same clown was castigating Peter Obi yesterday, I love that he was caught in UK, he’ll face the law, not every place is as lawless as Nigeria.@OgbeniDipo: Per allegations, it’s either Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, or one of their children has a medical condition and they brought another person’s child into the UK to harvest their organs and use them. Whatever it is, this is so shocking.

The UK doesn’t play with children.@FS_Yusuf_: This exposition of organ harvesting and human trafficking allegations on Sen Ike Ekweremadu and his wife could possibly open the pandora box to the spate of kidnappings in the east.@drpenking: Remember how God hardened Pharoah’s heart just so He could use them to show His power?

That’s how God allowed Ike Ekweremadu to badmouth Peter Obi so that He’d push him into Poto Poto and show that He has chosen Peter Obi. These are things of the spirit@ChigozieIAlex: The same Ike Ekweremadu that said voting Peter Obi is like throwing our votes away? No, the man called Peter Obi carries a dangerous grace.
