Security experts said increased collaboration among security agencies would effectively combat crime nationwide.
The experts said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, yesterday in Lagos.
They emphasised that synergy between agencies was crucial in curbing crime, particularly cybercrime, which had become a significant concern in today’s digital age.
President, Security Watch Africa Initiatives, Mr Patrick Agbambu, said there should be a social programme that would encourage participation of all security personnel.
“This will provide them with the opportunity to interrelate, meet one another and discuss issues.
“This will be useful so that anytime there is infraction somewhere, they can easily communicate instead of resorting to physical combat as more often is the case.
“It is, therefore, the responsibility of various security forces, agencies and services to come out with a programme that will create synergy among security agencies for this kind of interaction.
“A programme that is not only based on operational efficiency but on a social and interpersonal relationship with other personnel to help improve synergy among the agencies”, he said.
According to him, sport activities and competitions bring security personnel from different agencies together to compete and foster comradeship among them.
He noted that such sporting activities usually increased their operational skills and inter-personal relationships.
“Sporting competition is not just enough but there should be other social platforms that can help encourage this interaction.
“Various security personnel need to understand that they are all serving the same country and working together for the development of Nigeria and Nigerians”, Agbambu said.
“However, as security officers, they are required to first, imbibe the value of restraint in all situations which I feel is lacking with most personnel.
“Restraint is very important, if we must ensure there is law and order in a society.
“The security system we have now is such that some of the junior officers do not respect hierarchy”, he said.
Agbambu, therefore, called for more platforms that would encourage interaction, interpersonal relationship and synergy to help improve communication and cooperation among security agencies for better service delivery.
Similarly, another security expert, Ms Christiana Emmanuel, said modern strategy for tackling crimes required comprehensive collaborative approach.
Emmanuel, who is the managing director, CHEM System Solutions, told NAN in Lagos, that enhanced synergy through information sharing, joint operations, and partnerships were tools needed to fight crime especially cyber crime.
According to her, such collaboration not only strengthens the capacity to respond to incidents but also aids in the prevention of future crimes especially cyber crime.
“The synergy between security agencies is crucial to effectively curb crime especially cybercrime, which has become a growing concern in today’s digital age,” she said. NAN.
