House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the circumstances that led to the alleged misconduct by the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh.
It would be recalled that on Sunday, an there was an altercation between the lawmaker and a bolt river, Stephen Abuwatseye, which has since sparked online reactions.
The House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere had, during yesterday’s plenary, urged members to always protect the image and reputation of the parliament, as one negative image could impact adversely on others.
The majority leader cited Order 5 of the House Standing Rules which emphasised the need for accountability within the chamber, adding that “any conduct that brings the House into disrepute must be addressed promptly and thoroughly without delay.”
It would be recalled that the embattled lawmaker had expressed remorse, acknowledging that his actions did not align with the standards expected of him as a federal lawmaker.
It was also gathered that Ikwechegh, who had apologised to Abuwatseya, his family and the general public, equally promised to redress his steps against such misconduct.
The lawmaker, while tendering apologies to his colleagues and other lawmakers yesterday, explained that the unfortunate incident started like a joke.
“I recognise the distress and frustration this incident has caused Citizen Abuwatseya, his family and the public at large, the lawmaker said, adding that “as a public servant, I understand the weight of my role and how my actions impact others.”
He extended apology to the Inspector- General of Police, acknowledging the implications his remarks might have had on the police leadership, as well as the institution.
“This experience has been a humbling reminder of the need for restraint and self-control, especially in challenging situations,” he said, reiterating his commitment to accountability and personal growth as a representative.
Reacting to Ikwechegh’s apology, Jimi Benson stressed the importance of respect and dignity in lawmakers’ interactions with the public.
He urged his colleagues and other lawmakers to always be guided over certain conducts that might bring reproach to the Green Chamber.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, acknowledged the apology, but highlighted the need for due process.
Kalu thereafter referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, where Ikwechegh will have the opportunity to present his case.
The committee’s findings will be reported to the House for further action.
