House of Representatives has directed the Federal Ministry of Power and Rural Electrification Agency to immediately  restore electricity in Badagry West Local Council Development Area, LCDA, in Lagos State, to support water system and health facilities.

The House  urged the Federal Ministry of Health and National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, to deploy surveillance teams, medical resources and awareness campaigns to Badagry West immediately to contain the outbreak.

These followed a motion of urgent public importance moved during plenary yesterday by Sesi Whingan.

Whingan  expressed concern that a four-year power outage had crippled water systems, vaccine storage and health facilities, directly fueling the spread of cholera in the area.

The House, while commending local health workers and volunteers for risking their lives to combat crises, called on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to coordinate urgent relief, including clean water and sanitation facilities.

The lawmakers also directed the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to provide sanitary materials, water purification tablets and disinfectants to the affected communities.

The House Committees on Healthcare Services, Power, Rural Electrification, and Emergency Preparedness has  been mandated to visit Badagry West LCDA to assess the outbreak, power outage and hospital relocation, ensuring compliance, and report back within three weeks.
