Reps By-election: Usibe Tops List Of Candidates To Replace Jarigbe

By Cyril Ogar

The seat for the member representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has been vacant since Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe was elevated to the 9th Assembly.

Many Cross Riverians had indicated interest in the position but one candidate had been on the top list.

The candidates is Hon. Mike Usibe (Former Chairman of Yala LGA and also former Commissioner for New Cities Development) and Barr. Godwin Offiono under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Over the years Usibe has distinguished himself from others by empowering the youths. He has supported several women in the agricultural sector and has sponsored lots of youths through Education.

Hon Mike Usibe is a purpose-driven leader who is ready to rescue his people by providing more employment, projects, building infrastructure, and rendering services to them.

Recalled that a coalition of youth groups under the auspices Ogoja/Yala Youths Political Vanguard (OYPV) had endorsed his ambition to aspire and contest for the by-election for House of Representative position to represent Ogoja/Yala Federal constituency in Cross River State under the platform of the People Democratic Party, PDP even when it has not been declared vacant.

According to his supporters, Usibe has all it takes to represent the great and good people of  Ogoja/Yala federal Constituency in Cross River State in the House Representative based on his experience, knowledge, and pedigree over the years.

One major reason Usibe is said to be more ahead of other aspirants is the fact that for a very long time, since the inception of Democracy till this present 9th Assembly, Yala ll State Constituency which is one out of the State Constituencies that constitute the Northern part of Cross River State has never in history produced a Federal Legislator.

Not because they are not good enough as compared to those who have been there but because they are patient and always following due process.

Each day people cry for a dividend of democracy when someone is representing them but when it’s time for the leader to come out, we use all strategies to say it must come from a particular place without considering if another zone has ever produced someone from there or has tasted that seat to keep doing the good work he has been doing.

Bar. Godwin Offiono is another vibrant leader that has impacted many lives in the northern part of Cross River. Many believe that he would be the rightful replacement for Jarigbe.

Barr. Godwin Offiono has continue to gather support for his ambition to represent the good people of Ogoja/Yala federal Constituency, Barr. Godwin Offiono Aka Goffio has reached out to leaders and emerging leaders of the Ogoja/Yala for support and has gotten the needed encouragment from the various stakeholders of the party, stating that for the PDP, the task won’t be difficult since it will be a family affair.Barr. Godwin Offiono Aka Goffio, is another frontline aspirant for the soon to be declared vacant Ogoja/Yala federal Constituency seat.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has not thrown their weight on any candidate, they are having several meetings and putting their house together, to select a more competent and people-oriented candidate that will give the party victory at the bye-election.

Recall that the House of Representatives seat became vacant after the Court of Appeal declared its former occupant, Rt. Hon. Jarigbe Agom as the duly elected Senator for Cross River North.

As both the PDP and APC are warming up for another titanic battle for the seat, with APC’s three National Assembly members from the state which is in minority compared to PDP seven.

This election is very important to the party because no matter how APC supporters try to pretend, it’s clear as crystal that the PDP will not be a pushover in the election nor in 2023.Besides, a lot of people in APC today are APC in the mouth but PDP at heart.

So, to convince such people to stay true to the party during elections, the party must avoid giving them reasons to follow their “heart” by fielding candidates who is loved, appropriated and supported across party lines.

Ostensibly, the choice before the APC now is to either emboldene the PDP by fielding wrong candidate that will give the opposition party an edge or identify someone with acceptability that can win the election to strengthen its ranks and files ahead of 2023.
