North East Development Commission, NEDC, Wednesday, distributed food items to 1,900 beneficiaries across nine local government areas in Yobe.State.
NEDC State Coordinator, Mr Ali Abbas, made this known while handing over the items to state government officials in Damaturu.
He said the distribution targeted communities affected by Boko Haram insurgency and other disasters, as well as Persons Living With Disabilities, PLWDs, across the state.
Abbas added that the initiative was carried out under the directive of the NEDC Managing Director, Alhaji Muhammed Alkali, as part of the commission’s efforts to support Yobe government to
alleviate the sufferings of the vulnerable population.
He said “we are here today on the instructions of the managing director of the North East Development Commission to symbolically hand over food items to 1,900 direct beneficiaries.
“The beneficiaries are those who have been in one way or the other affected by Boko Haram insurgency because we are approaching Ramadan.
“This is because the commission feels that Yobe State government needs to be supported in its efforts toward alleviating peoples’ suffering.”
Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr Mairo Amshi, expressed gratitude to NEDC for the timely intervention.
She commended the NEDC state coordinator for the hard work and for fostering a strong working relationship with the state government through the ministry.
“We thank the commission and state coordinator for the hard work and listening ears and facilitating a cordial relationship with the state through the ministry of humanitarian affairs,” she said.
The commissioner handed over the list of beneficiaries to the Chairman of Yobe Commission of Persons With Disability, Alhaji Bura Gabai for onward distribution,.
Gabai, in his remarks, thanked NEDC for the support and acknowledged the state government, under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, for establishing the Commission of Persons With Disabilities. NAN
