Presidency: Emefiele’s Campaign Posters Flood Abuja

…As over 100 support groups urge him to contest

BY MUYIWA OYINLOLA

The call on Central Bank Governor, Dr. Godwin Emefiele, to join the presidential race ahead of the 2023 general elections intensified over the weekend as dozens of his supporters agitating for him to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari flooded the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, with his campaign posters.

AljazirahNigeria reports that the posters were noticeable in strategic places across the nooks and crannies of the nation’s capital.

Apart from the posters that adorned Abuja metropolis, supporters calling for him to join the race also turned the National Convention ground of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to a soapbox to press home their demands.

They were seen singing and dancing at and around Eagles Square, Abuja, venue of the convention.

In a carnival-like manner, they moved around the venue with banners and posters, even as they wore T-Shirts bearing his image and declaring him as the best man for the job.

Some of the groups championing the cause of the CBN Governor at the venue included Civil Society Youth Support Group For Emefiele, and Arewa Support Group 4 Emefiele, Emefiele Support Group, among others.

The call on Emefiele to run for the number one office has been intensified lately, with those mopping support for him flying his record of achievement in office.

But he has yet to declare his aspiration for the office, nor has he distanced himself from those calling on him to join the race.

However, he has remained focused on his job and has continued to support President Buhari’s economic recovery drive.

While speaking about the chances of Emefiele and what Nigerians should expect from his Presidency, his associates, under the auspices of Friends of Godwin Emefiele, recently disclosed that he would do his best to stabilise the economy for orderly transition.

They also revealed that the CBN governor told them at a recent meeting that in his career trajectory, right from his days as a young banker, he never asked, nor lobbied for a job; he was invited by the Board of Directors to be the Chief Executive Officer/Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank as he was an integral part of the team, led by founder Jim Ovia, that transformed Zenith Bank from a start-up to one of Africa’s largest banks with subsidiaries in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, South Africa, Dubai, China and the United Kingdom.

They said the CBN governor stated that in 2014, when President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him the CBN governor, he never lobbied for the job and that his name was not among those being considered at that time.

“He was not even from the geo-political zone that most people thought the job would go to as the president then was from the same geopolitical zone with him”, they said.

Following his growing profile, opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, recently called for his immediate resignation but in response, the director of communications of Emefiele Support Group, ESG, Benigna Ejimba, said Mr Emefiele had not violated any law.

According to him, the CBN governor has yet to declare for the upcoming 2023 election.

“It is quite interesting that a mere poster is generating so much noise and worry from the opposition”, he said.

“This indeed confirms to us that we are on the right path. As members of the Emefiele Support Group, we made our choice to ask for his Presidency because, in him, we see a man who has shown passion and commitment to our country’s development.

“We will not be derailed by the noise but will continue until Godwin Emefiele answers the clarion call to lead our great nation”.

Also reacting to the development, a group known as Nigerian Patriotic Quest frowned at the PDP’s challenge.

In a statement issued on Sunday, and signed by its

Co-ordinator, Ahmed Ja’Usman Tijani, it noted that:

“After reading through the press release by the PDP Publicity Secretary, we are forced to assert that these are the products of a mischievous and over-excited imagination”.

“We are shocked by the deliberate distortion of facts and indeed by the ignoble attempt to deceive the public, through the countless repetition of empty allegations.

“Our interest in this matter is based on the fact that we are prominent campaigners for Emefiele to be part of the presidential contest come 2023. We owe no one any apology for this, and we will continue to affirm that Emefiele is the type of leader that this nation needs now.

“We are indeed surprised that a National Publicity Secretary of the PDP will at this time believe that running down Emefiele is the best way to re-energise their ineffective opposition politics of the past 7 years.

We are convinced that the publicity secretary may be serving the interests of some puppeteers, who may not necessarily be members of the PDP, who feel threatened by the ever-rising profile of the CBN Governor Emefiele.

“The baseless of these allegations is underlined by the fact that at no time has Emefiele declared to be a presidential candidate of the APC.

“To further expose this hatchet job for what it is, there is no single poster of Emefiele with the insignia of APC on it.

In order to emphasise the ridiculousness of Ologunagba’s assertions, the poster he presented in his press release to support his allegation bears no APC symbol or logo on it.

“This is the efforts of a man who is ready to concoct all sorts of lies in order to achieve his preconceived objectives. Perhaps, he was emboldened by the assumption that Nigerians will not take the time to verify his empty allegations.

The fact remains that Godwin Ifeanyichukwu Emefiele never appeared in any APC poster till date.

“We dare say, that if any such poster appears overnight starting from now, it will be the handiwork of Mr. Ologunagba and his cohorts, who knowing that they have been exposed, may resort to producing such materials in order to cover their shame

“The very unfounded basis of his major allegations against Emefiele has also put the lie to all other accusations in his press release.

“Emefiele in his position as the CBN governor, to all objective observers, has performed his duties with a great sense of patriotism, dedication and non-partisanship. Indeed, the benefits of the CBN’s economic interventions and policies cut across political or geographical boundaries.

“This is the main reason his efforts have been acclaimed across the country; and this is why we and the generality of citizens believe that he is the most suitable candidate for the post of president come 2023”.

Speaking at the APC Convention ground, Director General, Emefiele Support Group, Kabiru Buba, said that the group’s agitation for the apex banker to join the 2023 presidential race was borne out of a painstaking selection process by the group.

According to Buba, if Emefiele succeeds Buhari his emergence will ensure consolidation of the giant stride being recorded by the CBN and by extension the Federal Government’s achievements.

In this vein, he called on President Buhari to also prevail on the CBN governor to join the presidential race.

Emefiele’s supporters at the just concluded APC National Convention were unanimous that their choice for Buhari’s successor is the best candidate among the array of aspirants being tipped for the number one job.
