Presidency has disowned a growing wave of 2027 campaign billboards promoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing them as unauthorized and illegal.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency expressed dismay over the billboards, which have been spotted in cities like Abuja and Kano, some featuring images of the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
While acknowledging the enthusiasm and loyalty of supporters, the Presidency emphasized that President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima have not sanctioned any 2027 campaign efforts, adding that such actions contravene the nation’s electoral laws.
“The electoral law that guides the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections”, the statement noted. “Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages”.
The Presidency warned individuals and groups behind the campaign materials to desist immediately, stressing that the President remains focused on delivering his administration’s agenda, which includes economic revitalization, infrastructural renewal, human capital development, social investment, and national security.
“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC, sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television”, Onanuga stated.
He added that when the time is right and INEC signals the start of the electoral process, President Tinubu will communicate his intentions directly to Nigerians.
