The Vatican announced on Friday that the formal inauguration of Pope Leo XIV will be held on May 18 with a Mass in St. Peter’s Square, starting at 10 a.m. (0800 GMT).
This event follows his election as the successor to Pope Francis.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen as the first American pope on Thursday, after the traditional white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, marking the conclusion of four rounds of voting in the conclave.
According to the Holy See, Pope Leo XIV will retain Pope Francis’ senior Vatican officials for now. His first weekly general audience is scheduled to take place on May 21.
