Date:

FROM RABILU ABUBAKAR, GOMBE

Retired Commissioner of Police in Kano State and former Special Adviser to Governor Inuwa Yahaya, Muhammad Wakili has emphasised that the police, as a powerful institution, must wield its authority with caution and responsibility.

Speaking Thursday at a town hall meeting with stakeholders as part of activities marking the National Police Week in Gombe, CP Wakili stressed that the police cannot operate in isolation without community support.

He urged officers to adopt an open-door policy and actively listen to public concerns to foster mutual trust.

“The police are not enemies of the people; rather, they are a force for progress. However, power must be handled carefully to avoid misuse,” Wakili stated.

He commended the Gombe State Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, for his dedication and contributions to maintaining law and order.

Wakili also called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in ensuring a safer society.

In his remarks,  Yahaya reaffirmed that the National Police Day, observed annually on April 7, recognises the vital role of the police in the society.

He encouraged officers to strengthen community engagement and maintain an open-door policy to build public trust.

In a goodwill message, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Abdullahi Bello praised CP Yahaya for organising the event and urged him to sustain such initiatives to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the people.

As part of the week-long celebration, the police carried out a grand sanitation exercise at key public places, including Gombe Central Roundabout, Gombe Central Market, and Dankwambo Motor Park, to promote environmental hygiene.
