Police Arrest Man For Rape, Theft In Ogun

Police in Ogun State have arrested 33-year-old Olayemi Shedrack for allegedly leading a gang of robbers to a female hostel at Tai Solarin University of Education, TASUED, Ijagun, where the students were sexually assaulted, raped and their valuables carted away.

Shadrach was said to be the main suspect in the rape and armed robbery incident that occurred on July 21 at Female Royal Villa.

The suspect and his gang stole valuables including laptops, iPhones, sports watches and cash, from the students and since then he has been on the trail of the police before he was arrested.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta, yesterday.

Odutola said the suspect was apprehended, following a tip-off that he was spotted in Ijagun attempting to blend in with the crowd, but his true identity was verified through intelligence sources.

She said he was promptly arrested by the divisional police officer of Igbeba Division and wanted for committing armed robbery.

The police spokesperson said preliminary investigation had been launched into the incident and Shedrack had been taken to Igbeba Police Station for interrogation.

She assured the public that the suspect would soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu has ordered the arrest of other members of the suspects’ gang, while appealing to residents of Ijagun to provide credible information to help the police arrest other fleeing criminals.
