Plateau Youth Council, PYC, the umbrella body for all youths in the state, has called on the State Independent Electoral Commission, PLASIEC, to conduct a credible and peaceful local government election.

Chairman of PYC, Mr Panan Gongden, made the call yesterday when he visited the Chairman of PLASIEC, Mr Planji Cishak, in Jos.

Gongden, who thanked PLASIEC for the adequate preparations so far, said the October 9 local government polls must not truncate the current fragile peace in the state.

He promised to sensitise youths across the 17 local government areas to be peaceful before, during and after the election.

“Yuths are the engine room of good governance, and good governance begins with free and fair elections.

”This is why we are calling on PLASIEC to ensure that the forthcoming local government election is credible and peaceful.

”However, we will sensitise youths on the dangers of electoral violence and malpractice, in order to create an enabling environment for a credible and peaceful election,”he said.

Responding, the PLASIEC chairman assured Plateau residents that the forthcoming polls would not be business as usual.

He assured that messures had been put in place to ensure a free, fair, credible and peaceful polls.

“We will conduct not just a free and fair election, but one that the votes of Plateau residents will count,”he assured.

Cishak added that the commission would conduct an election that would be in tandem with global standards.(NAN)
