Fasehuns Protest President Tinubu’s Omission Of OPC Founder In List Of June 12 Heroes

The Estate of Dr Frederick Fasehun has protested the omission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the OPC Founder in the list of June 12 heroes contained in the presidential Democracy Day address.

In a statement on Wednesday in Lagos by the Late OPC Founder’s son, Mr. Remi Fasehun, the family described the omission of the foremost Democracy Activist in the President’s list as uncharitable, ungrateful and unpardonable.

“The President was a di beneficiary of our father’s activism and sacrifice for democracy,” the younger Fasehun said on behalf of the Estate. “Not only were they in the trenches together, Fasehun helped Tinubu to escape into exile. In fact, it is on record that, when General Sani Abacha’s squad surrounded Senator Abraham Adesanya residence where they held a meeting, Tinubu mounted the back of Fasehun and jumped the fence to flee into hiding and subsequently into exile.

“Several people, who escaped from the country into exile and joined NADECO-Abroad, including Pa Anthony Enahoro, were personally taken by boat and bush paths, through the NADECO Route, by Dr. Fasehun. He was at a point the link between Pa Enahoro-NADECO and NUPENG, the union that played a pivotal role in that struggle.

“He was thrown into prison several times by the General Sani Abacha junta, in Kirikiri, Ilorin and Kuje. At the infamous Inter Centre in Ikoyi Cemetery, he was held incommunicado for several months, an experience that inflicted immense damage on him physically and psychologically, to the extent of leaving his vision impaired for life.

“His family and businesses paid dearly for his struggle for democracy. Today, his wife and children still pay the price of their father’s sacrifice to birth the democracy Nigeria has today.”

They said Fasehun’s hospitality business, Century Hotel, as well as his Besthope Hospital in Lagos, were today a shadow of the flourishing enterprises they used to be before he threw himself into the struggle for June 12.

University of Aberdeen-trained Medical Doctor and Africa’s first Acupuncturist, Dr. Fasehun died December 1, 2018 in Lagos at the age of 83.

Furthermore, according to the statement, Fasehun specifically founded the socio-cultural group, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), in 1994, as a vehicle for wresting democracy from the sit-tight military junta.

“To ignore such an inimitable icon as Dr. Frederick Isiotan Fasehun from any so-called list of June 12 and Democratic Heroes smacks of crass injustice and inexplicable vendetta,” his Estate declared.

It recalled that in the struggle for June 12, hundreds of OPC members paid the supreme price, through extra-judicial killings by overzealous and ill-advised security agents.

“We only hope that in the name of fairness and justice, the President will correct this anomaly and place Dr. Fasehun in Nigeria’s democratic Hall of Fame as he very well deserves,” the Estate said.

“Truth should not be sacrificed on the altar of politics, however. Dr. Fasehun should be given his well-deserved historical recognition as a true Nigerian Hero of Democracy,” the statement declared.

While acknowledging that leading a huge nation like Nigeria could be a Herculean task, the Fasehuns urged Tinubu to put welfare packages in place to ameliorate the unprecedented poverty, inflation and insecurity bedeviling citizens.

“The driver of a commercials vehicles, said infact we don’t know the number of passengers were abducted by insurgents but certainly there was an abduction on maiduguri -kano highway road.

“Another source confirmed that Attackers came with at least three vehicles, we don’t know how many people were abducted but some of the commercial drivers came back and later returned to Maiduguri before military reinforcement arrive the scene later an hours.

Oborevwori’s Special Adviser In Alleged Scandal Of N39M Office Stationaries

The Special Adviser to the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’ of Delta State on Project Monitoring, Dr. Goodnews Agbi, currently in an alleged scandal involving over 39 million naira for office stationeries.

Agbi, who was appointed in September last year, 2023, allegedly received a sum of 6 million naira as office imprest to carry out project monitoring, in addition to other accruals from the Ministry of Economic Planning.

According to reports, Agbi created four monitoring teams of about 8 to 10 persons each, giving them a monthly imprest of 400,000 naira per team, totaling 1.6 million naira monthly. This leaves him with a balance of 4.4 million naira every month. Over nine months, this amounts to 39.6 million naira, presumably for the purchase of office stationeries and SPAD inspections.

Our source revealed that Agbi conducts project inspections once a month at the cost of 4.6 million naira for one day.

He schedules about three to five different projects for inspection in one day, and at the end of the day, he gets the accountant and Permanent Secretary to raise a voucher of 4.6 million naira for office stationeries and project inspection, which he collects. This practice has been ongoing for the past nine months.

One of the project monitors, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the government has not provided the Office of Project Monitoring with a well-defined structure or framework. A monthly office imprest of 6 million naira is dumped at the office, which the SPAD uses unchallenged.

The SPAD pockets 4.6 million naira every month for office stationeries and a one-day inspection. The actual money spent is the 1.6 million naira given to the four project monitoring teams (400,000 naira each). This lax and cash-driven attitude of the SPAD has affected the project monitors, who also visit sites once a month, deducting the cost of fuel from the monthly 400,000 naira and sharing the balance among themselves.

Meanwhile, the SPAD is reportedly making undisclosed large sums of money from contractors, allowing them to continue poor job execution.

He harasses contractors who refuse to comply, using social media threats to close down their sites and other intimidation tactics to force them to pay him. However, once they pay him a substantial amount, the issues disappear, and he no longer visits those sites.

On May 8, Agbi allegedly organized a smokescreen workshop for project monitors, bringing a lecturer from Ozoro University and one of his church pastors to address them. At the end of the address, he gave project monitors 10,000 naira each.

This caused a serious rift between the SPAD and project monitors, who almost fought Agbi physically. The workshop had no materials, no lunch, and nothing provided, despite Agbi reportedly collecting about 5 million naira from the Ministry of Economic Planning to organize it.

One contractor confirmed that he had to pay 1.5 million naira to Agbi through a crony to avoid unnecessary harassment, even though his project was up to standard. A contractor in Delta Central said that once Agbi informs you of a site visit, you must set aside about 1.5 million naira to pacify him, as he will find faults with every aspect of the project.

This is the first time the head of the office has been involved in financial sleaze since its creation, according to one project monitor. Previous heads like Hon. Erijo, Ovie Oghoore, and Chief Tony Ofoni managed the office without such scandals. They handled contractors privately and reported non-compliant ones to the Governor. Only well-executed jobs were showcased to credit the Governor and Delta State Government, unlike Agbi, who publicly harasses contractors.

Under Hon. Erijo, project monitors received extensive training from professional project consultants from Lagos, with proper equipment provided. Workshops concluded with monitors receiving about 40,000 to 50,000 naira. Agbi, however, is seen as greedy and self-serving, organizing inadequate workshops without basic materials.

In a swift reaction , Mr Goodnews Agbi described the allegations as untrue adding that those behind the purported scandals to rubbish him, will pay dearly for their sins. He said” The allegations are unfounded and untrue. I am not involved in such Contract scandals. I have been doing my work in accordance with the extant laws of Contracts. I don’t know where my enemies get their stories from but in all honesty, the stories are not true but to tarnish my hard earned integrity and Credibility”

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has regretted that despite decades of practice of democracy, the nation’s democracy still lacks the capacity to provide good governance and sustenable development to its population over the years.

In his message to Adamawa population to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration, Governor Fintiri said that Nigeria under the democratic experience has failed to provide the desired comfort, social security, economic stability and much anticipated prosperity for all Nigerian citizens.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humashi Wonosikou, the governor acknowledged the prevailing hardships and challenges facing Nigerians in the wake of the present harsh economic realities, even though the nation is celebrating its years of democracy.

In his words, “As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, I acknowledge the hardships and challenges that many Nigerians still face, and I regret that our democracy has not yet yielded the desired dividends of comfort, security, and prosperity for all citizens.”

Fintiri however commended the resilience and determination of Nigerians in upholding democratic values and principles and pledged his administration’s “commitment to deepening democracy and improving the lives of citizens.”

The governor however acknowledged the progress made in the past two decades of democracy and called on Adamawa population to embrace peace, unity, and harmony as the state celebrates this significant milestone, emphasizing that the sustenance of the hard-earned peace built over the last five years by his administration will stimulate accelerated development and warned that his government will not treat saboteurs with kid gloves.

The Governor who prayed for continued peace and prosperity in Adamawa State and Nigeria, as the nation marches forward in its democratic journey, he further reiterated his administration’s commitment to “providing the necessary infrastructure for sustainable development and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

“We will continue to prioritize projects that improve the lives of our people and guarantee the protection of life and property, creating a prosperous and peaceful Adamawa State for all”.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended Nigerians for upholding the core tenets of democracy over the 25 years, noting that efforts at democratic consolidation would engender sustainable development in the country.

In a statement, the governor also charged voters in the State to come out en masse to participate in the September 21 governorship election and to vote wisely so as to sustain the state’s developmental trajectory.

According to him, As we mark this year’s democracy day, it is pertinent to applaud the tenacity, resilience and bravery of Nigerians in sustaining the core tenants of democracy over the past 25 years. On the upcoming Edo State governorship election, the governor urged Edo people to vote wisely, ensuring to cast their vote for the candidate who presents the most credible, pragmatic, intelligible and coherent pathway to societal development.

He further added that, as we proceed to the polls in September, it is necessary to be circumspect. We have made tremendous progress in the State in the last eight years. It is now only reasonable to ensure that the baton to the candidate who ensures sustainability of the projects, initiatives and development trajectory that we have set in the State. So, I urge you all to come en masse and vote for the most credible, accessible and competent candidate, who has a track record of excellence.
