Telcos: Need For Improved Service Delivery

0

It would be stating less than the obvious to give a damning verdict on the Telcos in Nigeria that they have been totally reckless and unresponsive to the concerns of their numerous stakeholders.

The telephone revolution in Nigeria came in 2001 with the entry of GSM, which was a tremendous turnaround from the hitherto epileptic analogue system with attendant glitches. It may not be convenient at this point to list the numerous concerns and pains of users of that old system prior to the entry of the GSM which indeed brought relief to individuals, corporate bodies with the attendant benefits of being able to reach-out to virtually every part of the World.

For purpose of elucidation, GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications, which is a digital mobile network technology that allows mobile devices to communicate via voice and data. GSM is a second-generation (2G) telecommunication standard that was developed in the 1980s by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute ,ETSI, from reliable internet source. The system has since then advanced beyond the 2G network.

However, growing demands for reliable connectivity in Nigeria’s digital economy, stakeholders have urged telecommunication companies to prioritise robust and inclusive services.

We are impressed that stakeholders including industry leaders, government officials, and consumer advocates have called for enhanced infrastructure and service delivery across the country.

They expressed concerns over frequent network disruptions, slow internet speeds, and limited rural connectivity, which continue to hamper businesses and individual users. All these have been the drawbacks of the system that indeed revolutionised our world of telephony.

President of the Nigerian Digital Economy Forum, Dr. Adewale Yusuf, highlighted the critical role of telcos in fostering economic development. He said: “Telecommunication is the backbone of Nigeria’s digital transformation”.

Yet, inadequate services and poor infrastructure have created barriers to growth, innovation, and digital inclusion.

He noted the increasing reliance on digital platforms for education, e-commerce, healthcare, and financial services, stressing that the current state of telecom services was insufficient to meet the demands of Nigeria’s rapidly growing population.

To enjoy better patronage and give quality service, Telcos must invest heavily in expanding network coverage, particularly in underserved rural areas, as this would enable greater access to digital resources and bridge the digital divide.

They have also been encouraged to implement advanced technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence ,AI, to improve network stability and speed.

We align our position with one expert who noted that the telcos must engage and enlighten the subscribers before reviewing their tariffs. “We are advocating for quality services and that we are not going to compromise in 2025. The telecom operators in Nigeria have failed us and we won’t take that this year.

“They are agitating for tariff increase whereas we don’t get value for what we pay for. If they want to review their tariffs, they must first improve their services and then engage us for every stakeholder to reach an agreement on the amount”.

With increasing online activities, stakeholders emphasised the need for telcos to adopt robust cybersecurity measures to protect users from digital threats.

We urge the Nigerian Communications Commission ,NCC, to work closely with telcos to ensure compliance with service quality benchmarks.

Also the Commission has often expressed its commitment to fostering a thriving telecom sector it must walk the talk by ensuring compliance. This can be achieved by creating an enabling environment for the Telcos.

Given the commitments from operators and regulator, we are optimistic that the telecommunications sector in Nigeria would no longer experience epileptic services which have bedeviled GSM services since its inception.

It has not been totally a tale of woes but there are grounds for improvement in the telecoms sector.

Impeached LG Chairman Accuses Okpebholo Of Victimanisation

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Impeached Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, Paul Iyoha, has accused  Governor Monday Okpebholo of orchestrating his removal from office.

Iyoha faulted the process leading to his impeachment, noting that neither he nor other chairmen  were given fair hearing before being suspended by the  House of Assembly.

He lamented that they were not  properly investigated or given the opportunity to defend themselves.

Iyoha insisted that he had carried out his duties effectively, ensuring  prompt payment of salaries and allowances to councillors and staff.

The impeached council chair, who disclosed these to journalists in Benin City, expressed confidence that the judiciary would address the situation fairly, while  he continues to pursue legal redress.

Iyoha said his “sins”  was his political allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party’s, PDP, gubernatorial candidate in the 2024 elections, Dr Asue Ighodalo.

He discribed his ordeal as driven by political vendetta rather than legitimate governance concerns, adding that, “my only offence is standing by my party’s candidate instead of supporting Governor Okpebholo, who hails from the same ward in Esan Central as myself.

“As a loyal member of the PDP, I was duty-bound to support my party’s candidate. It is not a crime to work for one’s party. However, the governor has taken my political stance personally and is using his office to punish me.”

Iyoha alleged that the governor openly vowed that he would not be reinstated as chairman, citing a video purportedly showing Iyoha campaigning against him during the election.

“The governor told people that I will never return to my position because I opposed him politically. This is unfair and undemocratic,” he added.

He recounted the challenges he faced during the  governorship election, adding that he faced intimidation, including an attack on his residence, abduction of his brother and threats to his safety.

He claimed these actions were part of a broader effort to suppress opposition voices in the state.

Iyaho added, “Despite the tension, I attended the governor’s inauguration and sent a congratulatory message, as a gesture of respect for the office.”

He however, criticised the administration for politicising governance by involving party figures in official matters.

Economic Foundation: Tinubu Deserves Support  – APC

President Bola Tinubu deserves the support and patience of Nigerians to consolidate on the deep economic foundation he has laid, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has disclosed.

This came after the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, claimed in his New Year message that the country’s political, economic and security situation is worsening daily.

APC’s spokesman, Mr Felix Morka, in a statement on Thursday, described Obi’s claim as misleading and intended to score cheap political points.

According to Morka, the economy has shown significant progress in the last 18 months, with a steady record of growth, massive balance of trade surpluses and a surge in foreign direct investments.

He attributed this development to increased confidence in the economy, enhanced foreign reserve and a significant decline in debt servicing ratio from 90 percent to about 64 percent.

Morka also noted that the administration is working to ensure that the ongoing reforms deliver their fullest benefits for the country’s sustainable growth and transformation.

“President Tinubu has acknowledged that the cost of food and essential drugs remains a significant concern for many households.

“He has assured that his administration is committed to lowering food prices by boosting food production and promoting local production of drugs.

“He has also vowed to reduce inflation from 34 percent to 15 percent in the course of this fiscal year.

“With the vigour in the administration’s war on corruption, Tinubu is turning the nation’s fortunes around,” Morka said.

I’m Going Into Movies, Music  In 2025, Says Basketmouth

0

Stand-up comedian, Basketmouth has revealed plans to shift his focus to music and filmmaking.

In a recent interview, the comedian stated that he intends to take music more seriously, releasing EPs and collaborating with other artists.

Basketmouth also expressed his desire to transition into filmmaking full-time, citing it as his first love.

The comedian revealed that he initially pursued a career in music before turning to comedy.

He said, “I am going to take music more seriously in 2025. I want to create EPs because there are some artistes I want to work with.

“I want to go into music and movies full-time. To be honest, movies are my first choice. I prioritise movies over comedy. It has always been like that, it is just that I have not made the movie yet.

“I started with music but I saw that it was not going to work. I have always been funny since primary school but music was just a talent I felt I could use as a plaything. Rap was my thing but after a while, I realised that it was not going the way I wanted. Then I tried comedy, it was even by fluke. I was like, ‘this one is working. It must be the one”.

According to him, his entry into comedy was accidental, but he quickly found success after overcoming initial challenges.

“When I entered comedy, the beginning was turbulent but immediately I hacked it, my career skyrocketed”, he said.

Oyo: Road Crashes Claimed 222 Lives In 2024 – FRSC

0

Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Oyo Sector Command  said yesterday that 222 people lost their lives in various road crashes in 2024.

The corps disclosed this in Ibadan in its end-of-the-year statistics signed by the Sector Commander, Mrs Rosemary Alo.

Alo said the figure indicated a reduction compared to the 270 deaths recorded in 2023.

According to her, the figures emanated from 304 road crashes recorded in 2024 and 495 crashes in 2023 respectively.

The sector commander noted that the statistics indicated that 779 people were injured in crashes in 2024 compared with 1,321 in 2023.

“1,795 people were involved in road crashes in 2024, while 2,935 people got involved in 2023.

“The number of crashed vehicles reduced to 412 in 2024 from 794 recorded in 2023,” she said.

The sector commander attributed the 2024 road traffic crash data reduction to aggressive stakeholders sensitisation programmes and enforcement exercises of the corps.

Alo added that the corps embarked on inclusive advocacy in 2024, sensitising passengers to always engage their rights to speak out when a driver drives recklessly.

“Initially, the focus has always been on drivers, but now, we are telling passengers to note that more people lose their lives in an accident than the driver.

“So, passengers must not be complacent when the driver fails to obey traffic rules,” she said.

She, however, urged drivers and commuters to always see their safety on the road as a joint responsibility to avoid loss of lives and property.

DSP Faults N1.7m Gratuity, N40,000 Pension

0

Esther Marcus who claims to be a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, has shared her experience of being underpaid after 35 years of service.

In a viral video, Marcus, who claimed to have joined the force at the age of 16, disclosed that after retiring in 2018, she received N1.7 million as her gratuity and was subsequently placed on a monthly pension of N40,000.

Voicing her frustration over what she called the “dirty contributory pension scheme,” she said, “My name is Esther Marcus, a retired DSP of the Nigeria Police Force. I retired on November 1, 2018. I just want to use myself as a case study. It is applicable to every other police officer under this dirty contributory pension scheme.

“After serving for 35 years, though I joined the Nigeria Police Force at a very young age, I escorted a friend; unfortunately, she was not selected, but I was chosen because I was tall, even though I was not yet 16 when I joined the police.

“When I retired in 2018, I waited for over a year before I was given N1.7 million after 35 years. Then, after waiting for another three months, they started paying me N40,000 as my monthly pension after giving me N1.7 million and that applies to every other policeman  who retired under this dirty scheme called the contributory pension scheme. That is what we’ve been going through.”

According to her, the federal government has ignored their pleas despite multiple public hearings on the issue.

Marcus added, “This struggle has been ongoing for over 10 years now because when I retired in 2018, there was a police retirees meeting. They started it in 2017 or thereabout and all our cries to the federal government have been met with deaf ears. It is not an insult, but that is the truth.

“They are aware of what we are going through. They have held about three or four public hearings on this case. But when personnel of the army was retiring, the DSS and other paramilitary forces — there was nothing like a public hearing.”

Marcus also highlighted what she saw as inequality within the police force, claiming that senior officers like Assistant Inspectors General, AIGs, Deputy Inspectors General, Digs, and the Inspector General, IGP, have been exempted from this pension scheme.

“The AIGs, DIGs and IGP have exempted themselves from this dirty contributory pension scheme. They only left commissioners of police downwards; they are the ones suffering it.

“The president cannot say he has not heard of this issue. He knows what is happening,” she said.

Marcus, determined to continue the fight for justice, vowed that  retired police officers would not stop advocating for their rights. “Let me tell you, we will never stop fighting because even those coming behind us, you cannot just see  injustice and not fight against it. It is not possible.

“How do you expect me to survive on N40,000? That is for me as a DSP. We have two-star officers and one-star officers who are receiving N28,000 and you want them to survive on this? What offence did the police commit to deserve this ill-treatment?

“We will not stop fighting. What we are planning now is to go and occupy the National Assembly and call CNN to cover the whole programme.”

She added that anyone opposing this reform is akin to a vulture, waiting for the vulnerable to perish.

“Anyone who is against us will not escape from this evil bondage. That person, that man, that group who does not want the police to be exempted from this evil— they are vultures because a vulture only waits for its victim to die, then it comes to feed. And that is what has been happening.”

Marcus  stated that it is unrealistic to expect police officers to stop engaging in corrupt practices when they know retirement will bring them into such financial circumstances.

She said, “You want the police, knowing fully well that when they retire, they are going into hell; you want them to stop corruption? They will continue collecting bribe. They will continue extorting. They will continue enriching themselves by whatever means they can.”

From London to Abuja: Mikel Arteta and Bunmi Haruna Share a Vision of Resilience and Tactical Innovation

0

Arsenal FC of London and Abuja-based FWC Champions FC share a compelling narrative of resilience and ambition. Both teams have faced challenges in their pursuit of titles: Arsenal has been without an EPL trophy for over two decades, while FWC FC has not secured a major title in nearly seven years.

In the wake of recent struggles, Arsenal boldly appointed former player Mikel Arteta in 2019, and in 2024, FWC FC took a decisive step by introducing the dynamic young coach Bunmi Haruna, a former assistant coach for Nigeria’s U-17 team. Both are passionate about their craft, with Arteta born in Spain in 1982 and Haruna just a year younger.

Reflecting on his first year, Haruna hailed it as both demanding and transformative. He successfully guided his team through an unbeaten league season, bringing them back into the conversation for top-tier contention. While they experienced a setback in the promotion playoff, losing on penalties, their captivating style of play has garnered a growing fanbase, especially in Jos. Additionally, the club celebrated its triumph in the FCT Pre-season Tournament, marking its first trophy in five years.

Looking ahead, FWC FC has set ambitious goals for itself, targeting promotion to the NNL and a state FA Cup victory by 2025. Haruna is dedicated to developing players for European opportunities and building a robust scouting network to help African talents make their mark in top-tier football. He envisions a future where players can secure positions with prestigious clubs like Barcelona and Chelsea by 2025.

“Our targets are clear: promotion to the NNL and the state FA Cup. I am committed to helping young talents in Africa achieve their dreams of playing for elite European clubs through my scouting network.

“I’m also among the few Nigeria-based coaches proficient in the latest video analysis software to dissect football games.

“I look forward to applying this expertise to continental teams and our national squad in the coming year,” said coach Bunmi Haruna.

Haruna expressed his admiration for Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and his innovative set-piece routines. Impressively, over half of FWC FC’s goals in the NLO 1 Super 8 came from set pieces—tactics he mastered alongside Nigeria’s top youth team coaches.

“Set pieces are vital in modern football. I watch numerous Arsenal matches—not to imitate but to understand the strategic principles behind their offensive and defensive play, particularly during set pieces.

“I have learned immensely from working alongside Nigeria’s youth team coaches, including Manu Garba, Nduka Ugbade, Emmanuel Amunike, and Haruna Ilerika. They emphasize the impact of set pieces, which can shift the game’s dynamics in your favor, even when the team isn’t at its best,” Haruna concluded confidently.

Obi’s A Doomsayer, Hellbent On Inciting Nigerians Against Tinubu — APC

0

All Progressives Congress, APC, said Peter Obi‘s New Year message is “misleading and an attempt to score cheap political points”.

Obi was the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 elections.

In his New Year message to Nigerians, Obi criticised President Bola Tinubu, while expressing grave concerns over institutional corruption, mismanagement, poverty, hardship and an escalating debt profile.

The former governor of Anambra State stated that corruption has been deeply entrenched in government and nepotism has become the norm on Tinubu’s watch.

He also demanded “vigorous, positive actions” from the administration to bring succour to Nigerians.

However, in a counter-statement on Thursday,  APC’s spokesperson, Felix Morka, said Obi’s assessment is at variance with all indicators that showed that the economy is rebounding across all sectors.

Morka accused Obi and members of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of making relentless attempts to incite public outrage against the Tinubu administration.

The APC accused Obi of portraying himself as “a leading doomsayer, omniscient and philosopher’s stone”, while failing to deliver “meaningful achievements during his eight-year tenure as governor in Anambra State.

“In reality, 18 months later, the economy, under President Tinubu’s administration has shown a steady record of progress.

“Despite these and other initial beneficial outcomes of ongoing reforms, the administration is doubling its efforts to ensure their fullest benefits for the transformation of our country.

“It is a thing of irony that Obi, who now arrogates to himself to be omniscient and philosopher’s stone, when it comes to our nation’s challenges, left no record of significant achievement, let alone transformation of any kind, in his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State.

“Like his co-travellers in the PDP, his obsessive pessimism and endless but futile effort to incite public outrage against the administration is borne out of the realisation that Tinubu is unwittingly cementing their political irrelevance by his visionary and full-throttle reform.

“Under the banner of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda,’ President Tinubu is dutifully turning our nation’s fortunes around. We urge Nigerians to remain confident of better days ahead,” the statement reads.

The ruling party added that the president’s goal is to reduce inflation from 34 percent to 15 percent in 2025.

“With the vigour in the administration’s war on corruption, evidenced by ongoing investigations and trial of well-heeled Nigerians, Obi’s pontification on the urgent need to tame corruption is a clear case of carrying coal to Newcastle,” the party added.
