By Paul Effiong,  Abuja

House of Representatives yesterday witnessed a rowdy session when its Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Honourable Akin Rotimi, before presenting a matter declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills.

AljazirahNigeria reports that  the four reform  bills from the executive are a subject of heated national debate.

The House was thrown into shouting match as Rotimi declared that “Mr Speaker, I am from Ekiti State, the first state whose National Assembly caucus has unanimously endorse the tax bills”.

The endorsement of the bills triggered anger from ilawmakers during plenary shouting “No, No, No”.

Yesterday’s commotion once again brings to the fore how the bills have polarised federal lawmakers along tribal and regional divides.

Rotimi, spoke while  representing the Chairman, Committee on Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring, Honourable Boma Goodhead, to present a report.

However, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, brought the situation to a calm as he asked Rotimi to restrict himself to the person he is representing, noting that “we are not talking about tax bills. It is a very controversial issue. He, therefore, asked Rotimi to withdraw the statement.

“You know this is a controversial issue. I don’t want you to be mentioning things that are not relevant to the subject matter. On your behalf, I withdraw that statement that you have made”.

Besides, Abbas said “Rotimi “is expressing his personal opinion”.

He was just talking on a lighter note. Let’s not take it serious, the Speaker said.

Responding, the spokesman immediately apologised, and withdrew the statement while aggrieved members of the House demanded the image maker to step down  report slated for presentation.

He eventually step down the report as demanded during plenary.

It would be recalled that the House of Representatives had last week scheduled a special session on the bills but the meeting did not hold yesterday as controversy trailing the tax reform bills forced the lawmakers to suspend the hearing indefinitely.

Key among the opposers  to the bills are Senator Ali Ndume, Sen. Abdul Ningi, Sen. Orji-Uzor Kalu and other NASS members who do not speak to the Microphone.

Kompany sees promise in Bayern’s performance despite Cup exit

0

Nathan Tella was on target as German Cup holders Bayer Leverkusen booked their place in the quarter-finals after edging out rivals Bayern Munich.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 17th minute when veteran keeper Manuel Neuer was sent off after he rushed out of his goal and collided with the on-rushing Jeremie Frimpong.

Despite the advantage of the extra man, Leverkusen had to wait until the 69th minute to take the lead through former Burnley and Southampton attacker Tella.

A sumptuous cross into the box from Alex Grimaldo was met first time by Tella and and flew in beyond Bayern’s substitute keeper Daniel Peretz.

Vincent Kompany’s side, who were without injured top scorer Harry Kane, had their chances, though.

Defender Dayot Upamecano came agonisingly close to levelling, but his header towards the far post drifted wide.

Kingsley Coman rose highest to meet Joshua Kimmich’s corner, but could not direct his header on target, while Kim Min-jae also headed weakly wide on the stroke of half-time.

Xabi Alonso has still yet to lose in the German Cup after winning his eighth successive match in the competition as Leverkusen boss, while 20-time winners Bayern have not won the trophy since 2020

Winning start for Van Nistelrooy as Leicester beat West Ham

0

Jamie Vardy helped hand Ruud van Nistelrooy the perfect start as new Leicester boss – and pushed Julen Lopetegui closer to the brink at West Ham.

Striker Vardy pounced after just 98 seconds in Van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge, before Bilal El Khannouss and Patson Daka struck to seal victory for the hosts.

The Foxes moved up to 15th in the Premier League, two points behind the Hammers, but lived dangerously and needed goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to frustrate the visitors with a string of fine saves.

Niclas Fullkrug nodded home a consolation for the visitors in stoppage time.

But the pressure will remain on boss Lopetegui as he struggles to find a solution for success with the Hammers.

With just three wins from their last 12 top-flight games, Hammers fans have vented their frustration at the manager.

Van Nistelrooy, who was appointed on Friday to replace Steve Cooper, has said he was not a romantic manager who will put style in front of results.

But the King Power Stadium will soon fall in love with the Dutchman if he continues to bring out the Foxes’ fighting spirit.

They relied on a gritty display against the Hammers, but also owed much to the wastefulness of the visitors.

Danny Ings hit the post with a header, Jarrod Bowen spurned several chances, while Leicester defender Conor Coady cleared off the line from Crysencio Summerville.

After Vardy’s second-minute opener – although the Foxes needed to wait over two minutes for the video assistant referee (VAR) to rule the striker onside after he raced on to El Khannouss’ ball – keeper Lukasz Fabianski denied the veteran forward again, before the Hammers took control.

After Ings hit the woodwork, Bowen was twice denied by the excellent Hermansen.

The Hammers thought they had levelled after the break when Hermansen punched the ball into his own net as he tried to deal with a hanging ball, but Tomas Soucek was ruled to have fouled the goalkeeper.

Almost immediately, Leicester broke and grabbed a crucial second in the 61st minute when Moroccan El Khannouss found the corner from Kasey McAteer’s pass for his first league goal.

Fabianski’s fine save stopped Wilfred Ndidi from adding a third, before Coady kept out Summerville’s bundled effort.

Bobby de Cordova-Reid had another late Foxes strike ruled out for offside by VAR, but Daka wrapped up a dream night for Van Nistelrooy when he broke away in the 90th minute and rifled high into the net.

Fullkrug’s headed finish from Summerville’s corner was his first Hammers goal, but mattered little to the outcome as his side slipped to a disappointing seventh defeat in 14 league games
