Kogi State government has issued a stern warning to individuals illegally occupying National Housing Buildings in Phases I, II and III, located at Crusher, Lokoja.

A statement, according to the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Taiye Abanika, yesterday, called on the illegal occupants  to vacate with immediate effect.

Abanika noted that the illegal occupation has compromised the National Housing Programme, NHP, designed to provide affordable housing for Nigerians. Over 85 percent of the houses in the estate are currently being occupied illegally, with some individuals even selling the houses to unsuspecting buyers.

Government has provided a detailed breakdown of the housing units affected, including:

Phase I: 76 units, comprising four one-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, 48 two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows and 24 three-bedroom semi-detached bungalows.

Phase II: 92 units, comprising 20 one-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, 28 two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, and 44 three-bedroom semi-detached bungalows.

Phase III: 92 units, comprising 16 one-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, 28 two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, and 48 three-bedroom semi-detached bungalows.

Government has urged the illegal occupants to vacate the premises immediately, to enable the rightful allottees who have duly paid for the units to take possession of their homes. This urgent call to action aims to safeguard the interest of legitimate homeowners and maintain the integrity of the National Housing Programme.

Kogi State government has assured that it will take the necessary steps to restore order and ensure that the National Housing Programme is implemented as intended.

DANGER! Insecurity, Still  A Pain In The Neck

0

* Schools, farms, homes under siege

* Security personnel paying the ultimate price

* As troops record significant progress in 2024

Despite obvious efforts by security agencies led by the country’s military, cases of insecurity have continued, DAUDA ISAMAIL and MARYAM SANNI write.

On Tuesday, November 5 last year, at least 10 farmers including women from Wayam and Belu-Belu villages in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State were reportedly killed by bandits.

According to residents, six of the victims were beheaded and attackers went away with their heads.

They said many people also sustained bullet wounds and were being treated at a clinic in Kagara, the Headquarters of Rafi LGA.

Many were also kidnapped during the attack that happened around 5am when the victims were observing their early morning prayers, thus making residents of Wayam, Belu-Belu, Madaka and adjoining communities to flee to Kagara town, the Headquarters of Rafi LGA.

Recall that in September 2024, the Coalition of Shiroro Associations in Niger State had raised the alarm that bandits and terrorists have enslaved their people forcing them to farm for the bandits, and that they had also dispossessed the villagers of their harvests especially soya beans and maize just as several of the villagers have relocated to Gwada, Zumba, and Lakpma towns.

Raising the alarm in Minna, the coalition through its spokesman, Mallam Saidu Usman flanked by other executive members of the group, said the situation was climaxed by the recent killings of no fewer than 13 villagers at Mai-Gero in Manta ward of the local government.

“It is disheartening that inhabitants from the affected communities have been forced to abandon their farmlands and ancestral homes for fear of being kidnapped or killed”

In 2022, it was reported that bandits were occupying at least 12 of the 25 LGAs in the state.

That same year, the governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, had disclosed that not less than seven out of the 25 LGAs in the state were frequently under attack by bandits and terrorists.

This was even as the number of out-of-school children in the state had reached over 298,962, the highest in the North-central geo-political zone of the country.

The governor, who spoke at the flag-off of the North-central campaign against out-of-school children in Minna, the state capital, did not name the affected local governments but reports have it that Shiroro, Munya, Rafi, Magama, Mariga, Mashegu and Wushishi are some of the bandit-prone local governments in the state.

Bello said there is a nexus between the number of out-of-school children and insecurity that has plagued the seven local governments in the state, adding that:” When we talk about out-of-school children, the question begging for answer is why are there so many out-of-school children, obviously our size and current security situation plays a major role.

“To access some schools in Niger State, some pupils trek five to 10 kilometres to get to schools. With the security situation, if such a pupil is a girl, no parent will dare it especially when 10 to 11-year-old girls are being raped.”

The story isn’t different in other North Western states such as Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara and others. Even in Borno and other North Eastern states, news of terrorist attacks have continued with cases of bombings seemingly resurfacing.

It would be recalled that in August, bandits abducted over 150 persons and rustled over 1,000 cattle in some villages in Gobir Emirate of Sokoto State, Daily Trust can report.

The incident happened few days after the death in kidnappers’ den, of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, who was also the District Head of Gatawa.

The monarch was, on July 29, kidnapped alongside his son and six others on the Sokoto-Sabon Birni Road.  After that, a number of other attacks were also reported in the state.

A recent survey disclosed  that insecurity has led to closure of 113 schools in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States alone.

Observers, including Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, former Minister of State for Education, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission, and Cristian Mundrate, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, have therefore called for measures to secure schools to enable children to learn without hindrances.

Sadly, the South East is also bedevilled with widespread insecurity cases of “unknown gunmen” seem to be on a spree kidnapping, maiming, destroying and killing unarmed citizens and security operatives alike.

But despite perpetrators of insecurity being undeterred as they keep innocent citizens, schools, farms anr their homes under siege, while they make security agents pay the ultimate price, Nigeria’s military, Police and other security agencies have remained undeterred and unfazed as they recorded significant progress in making the country safe for citizens and residents too..

But despite these challenges, the millitary is no doubt prepared and recorded significant successes throughout 2024.

According to the Nigerian Defence Headquarters,  about  8,034 terrorists were neutralized, 11,623 apprehended and rescued 6,376 hostages.

Director Defense Media Operations Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this while briefing defense correspondents on the successes achieve by the by Armed Forces of Nigeria from January to December, 2024.

He noted that troops have since the beginning of the year been confronted by different threats in five active theatres of operations across the country, which include NE, NW, NC, SS and SE.

According to him, “Troops aggression across the various theatres of Operation since the beginning of the year culminated in 8,034 neutralised terrorists, 11,623 arrest and 6,376 rescued hostages. Furthermore, troops recovered 8,216 weapons, 211,459 ammunition and denied the oil theft of an estimated sum over #57 bn (N57,052,218,551.00) only.

“The breakdown of the recoveries are as follows: 4,053 AK47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, 731 dane guns and 240 pump action guns. Others are; 120,247 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 41,515 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 5,373 cartridges, 1,940 assorted arms and 25,664 assorted ammunitions.

“Additionally, troops recovered: 53,101,430 litres of stolen crude oil, 9,179,181 litres of illegally refined AGO and  90,595 litres of DPK. Others are; 156,095 litres of PMS amongst other items.

“Overall, the military is keeping up the pressure through ongoing operations in the various theatres across the country. The military is through these  operations, increasingly creating conditions in which terrorist can not carry out  acts of terror or harm citizens.”

He emphasised that the armed forces is constantly examining ways to improve the effectiveness of its operations and  guarantee the safety of citizens.

“On the whole, the armed forces is constantly examining ways to improve the effectiveness of its operations and  guarantee the safety of citizens.  Relatedly, operations are on an upward trajectory to winning the war,” he concluded.

IG Vows Decisive Response To Attacks On Police Officers

IGP

Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning against assault on police officers, declaring that any attack will be met with a decisive and appropriate response.

Speaking during his visit to the Enugu State Police Command, yesterday, Egbetokun emphasised that such actions are not only criminal, but also an affront to the entire institution, vowing zero tolerance for such incidents in 2025.

Egbetokun made it clear that assault on police officers are not only criminal, but also an attack on the entire institution. He stressed that the police will collectively respond to any killing or assault on their personnel, ensuring that justice is served.

He said, “We will not tolerate any assault on our officers, not to talk of killing. Assault on a policeman is criminal, it is an assault on the IGP and we are not going to take kindly to it, not to talk of killing any of our officers.

“Anywhere there is killing of any policeman, you must respond collectively and appropriately. There must be appropriate response from us. Where a policeman is assaulted, there must be appropriate response to it.

“We will not tolerate it anymore. This year, we are going to say no to assault on our officers. We are going to say no, a capital no, to killing of any of our men,” he insisted.

This zero-tolerance stance is part of the police force’s efforts to protect its personnel and maintain law and order. Egbetokun also acknowledged that the force is working with the federal government to improve the welfare of its personnel.

Interestingly, the force recently demonstrated its commitment to justice, as seen in its impartial investigation into the alleged assault of a Bolt driver by a federal lawmaker.

Egbetokun commended the policemen in Enugu State for their professionalism, but expressed concern about a few rogue officers who are tarnishing the force’s image.

He said: “I want to assure you, officers and men of Enugu State Command, that we recognize the good job that you are doing. You are very hardworking. You are committed. You are diligent in the discharge of your duties.

“I had met the governor earlier on and he was full of praises for officers and men of this command. I am super proud of your achievements and your conduct generally.

“I also want to tell you that as very good as you have been doing, there are still a few bad eggs among you that are giving us concerns.

“We are going to talk about that one when we have our family meeting. This year, we are going to approach it with determination. Determination to stamp out criminals. The ones that have been chased away will not be allowed to come back and I am going to support this command with everything, every resource that is at our disposal.

“So that the achievements you have recorded will not be tampered with, you are going to record more achievements this year.

“In this year, we are going to vigorously pursue our policing vision for Nigeria. We will emphasize professionalism. We will emphasize ethical conduct of our officers. We will emphasize training and retraining of our officers.

“We will equip you with modern policing tools to discharge your duties effectively. We will also look after your welfare. The federal government is passionate about the welfare of police officers. Mr President recognises the sacrifices that you make and he is very concerned about you.

“There are a lot of things that we are working out together that I don’t want to announce in public now, but by the time these welfare programmes start unfolding, you will just be quiet with it. It is not just something we want the public to know about now, but please be assured and don’t be persuaded by the enemies of the police to make you believe that your welfare is neglected.

“No IGP will neglect the welfare of his officers and men. I have read on social media all kinds of things being posted by mischievous people, mischief-makers. There was a recent one circulating that they said the IGP said any policeman who asks for your phone, you should beat him up. You can see that this is the handiwork of enemies.”

Economic Hardship Will Cost Tinubu Re-election – NNPP

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Kano State Chairman, New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Hashimu Dungurawa, has advised President Bola Tinubu to prepare for overwhelming defeat in 2027.

He said going by the alleged anti-masses policies of the Tinubu-led federal government, Nigerians had queued behind the party ahead of the the next general election.

He expressed optimism that NNPP would be victorious in the 36 states of the federation, including the presidential election.

“With your unfriendly anti-masses policies and your stance, just prepare for defeat in the next general election. You either change them or Nigerians will collectively change you,” Dungurawa said on Thursday.

Speaking to newsmen in Kano, he recalled that from his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Tinubu had been making life hard for Nigerians with his policies.

“From the podium on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu started reeling out anti-masses policies as if Nigerians had stepped on his toes. He kept slamming unfriendly policies on us, even up till today.

“With these challenges and many more deliberately created by the All Progressives Congress-led government, it is just a matter of time, as we will certainly ensure that Tinubu is out in 2027 and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, a true democrat, steps in,” he said.

The chairman said the party had opened offices, as well as established structures in states and local government areas, stressing that the development is an indication that NNPP would win  state and federal seats in 2027.

He noted that the party recorded successes in 2024 and was on course to achieve more in 2025.

“You are  living witnesses that we are lucky to have a God-fearing governor who has restructured Kano State in terms of infrastructure, empowerment and human development.

“Kano can now compete favourably with any modern city globally, especially with the state-of-the-art facilities made available in the metropolitan and rural areas,” he said.

Dungurawa said the only challenge that the party faced was the alleged plan by the federal government to impose a one-party system on the country.

He, therefore, warned the federal government to intensify efforts to introduce human-friendly policies that would alleviate the sufferings of the masses.

He dismissed as false, rumours that the national leader of the party,  Kwankwaso is planning to return to the APC.

The NNPP chairman said the rumour was to tarnish Kwankwaso’s reputation and towering popularity.

Obi Has Retired Other Political Opposition Figures – Omokri

0

Author and former media aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri has described Peter Obi as the only formidabble political oppostion figure in Nigeria, as he has retired others who contested the 2023 presidential election.

Omokri, who is an avid critic of the former Anambra State governor, said anyone parading themselves and think they are a bigger opposition is suffering delusion.

He expressed his admiration for Obi, who he said despite being severely flawed, has trudged on.

In a Facebook post yesterday, he said “Obi is currently the number one opposition figure in Nigeria. Bar none. Anybody in any opposition party who thinks that he is bigger than Obi right now is ‘just deluded’.

“Obi is severely flawed, but I admire how he has trudged on despite the obstacles he faces. Some people in one or two opposition parties have already been retired by Obi, but they just don’t know it yet because their money is keeping them on political life support.

“If only he could be less Igbo-centric, appeal to his ‘Obidients’ to use persuasive rather than abusive words and admit, then apologise for his ‘Yes Daddy’ ‘religious war’ comment against the Muslim Ummah, he would go far. Those are his Achilles heel. He cannot cross the Rubicon without addressing them.”

2027: Stop Denigrating Atiku, Support Group Knocks Kwankwaso

0

Nigerian Youths for Atiku, NYFA, has urged the 2023 presidential candidate of tmNew Nigerian People’s Party, NNPP, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso,  to stop attacking the reputation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Director of Communications, NYFA (Nigeria & Diaspora), Mr Dare Dada, made the call in a statement yesterday in Lagos.

Dada spoke against the background of a recent media interview granted by Kwankwaso, in which he accused Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of peddling lies at 80 years of age.

Kwankwaso, in the interview, had claimed that  Abubakar’s camp had falsely told some northern elders that the ex-vice  president had reached an agreement with him and the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, to take turns at the presidency from 2027.

Dada, who described the claim as untrue, said the former vice president was not a problem to Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition.

“It is so sad that someone of Kwankwanso’s calibre will make frantic efforts to denigrate the person of Alhaji  Abubakar just to score some cheap political points.

“The former vice president needs no validation from him to be relevant politically as far as the political space is concerned.

“Engaging in such level of falsehood just to make a point is not only ridiculous but demeaning,” Dada said.

He said  such attack on opposition figures is not good at this time when they are  supposed to be strategising on an alliance to give Nigerians a better deal in 2027.

Dada said  opposition leaders must shun divisive tendencies and rhetorics, capable of undermining the unity and progress needed in the nation.

The youth leader urged Kwankwaso to rather dissipate energy on issues confronting Northern Nigeria and speak up.

How DSS Operatives Crushed Bandits, IPoB Militants In Niger, South-East

0
dss

Details of how operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, eliminated scores of bandits and militants associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have emerged.

It was gathered that the militants met their waterloo in their attempt to wreak havoc on vulnerable communities in the North-Central and southeastern communities.

The  source revealed that based on intelligence, DSS operatives launched a major offensive on the gun-wielding bandits on motorcycles who were terrorising and looting shops in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

Scores of the militants were killed in the operation by the DSS who also seized their cache of weapons and motorcycles.

The  confrontation against the militants came barely a week after the operatives neutralised three bandits in Dogon Dawa, Mairiga Local Government Area.

In early December, they had also stormed t

Janyau Fulani Area in Gusau, Gusau-Kaura Namoda Road in Zamfara State and Dalori quarters, Maiduguri, Borno State and arrested several bandits terrorising parts of the North-East and North-West.

A top source said the DSS attack prevented the bandits from holding a vicious meeting in Niger State where they had assembled at a community in Uregi Village in Rafi Local Government Area to plot a massive onslaught on some communities.

The security source attributed the improved security witnessed during the just concluded yuletide to covet operations undertaken by the DSS, especially in the South-East.

The source lauded the new DSS leadership for the increased synergy between the agency and sister security organisations, which he noted had boosted prompt intelligence sharing with the military and other security agencies and helped to improve the security situation across the country.

The operative said: “It might interest you to note that before Christmas, the DSS identified several IPOB and Eastern Security Network camps in several parts of the southeast states.

“Collaborating with the DSS, we surgically dealt with IPOB and ESN leaders who were terrorising residents of the South-East. With the DSS, we were able to clear IPOB/ESN strongholds in Orsu, Oru East, Oru West and Orlu Local Government Area in Imo State, where several AK-47 weapons and IED-making materials and shrines were destroyed.

“In Enugu, the DSS led the operation to clear  Imilike Agu forest in Udenu Local Government Area, where several weapons of different calibres were destroyed and a large number of IPOB/ESN commanders neutralised. Several of such operations also took place in Abia, Anambra and Ebonyi States.

“That was why people in the South-East were, for the first time in several years, able to celebrate the Yuletide in peace,” the source said.

NSC Chairman Pledges Support For Tennis Sensation Khadijat Mohammed

0

Joel Ajayi

In line with National Sports Commission’s catch-them-young disposition, the Commission has thrown its weight behind teenage tennis sensation Khadijat Eleojo Mohammed. At only 15, Khadijat has proven to be the next big thing in Nigerian tennis.

She became the first West or Central African player to win the ITF J30 World  Tour. Aged 14 in 2023, she is the first teenager to win the Dala Tennis, a title she retained this year. Way above her peers, she has even cracked it professionally with back-to-back Dala Hard Court titles.

The challenge now, is how to make that step to the next level considering the immense financial demands of professional tennis. For this reason, her father and coach, Mohammed Ohinoyi, a certified ITF coach and a former professional tennis player, appealed to the NSC for support.

They had helped her thus far with their meager resources and can no longer afford the demands of the next phase of her development.Step in, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko. The Commission will ensure that Khadijat’s full potentials are realized. His words, “”I am quite impressed with what you have been able to do with your tennis career.

No doubt you deserve all the encouragement and support that you can get. Even if you didn’t come here, I am sure we would have found you along the line. I will make sure we support and help you to be the best you can be. Obviously the potentials are there.

For you to be winning big tournaments professionally at such a young age, the future is very bright. We will support you so that you don’t fall by the wayside.”This is in line with our grassroots program. We are embarking on a vigorous exercise to discover younger talents to take over from the older athletes. We are doing this across all sports. And here you are. Be rest assured that we will carry you on our wings.

“The Commission will shortlist her for their adopt-an-athlete initiative.”We have the adopt-an-athlete program, so we will see how we can put you on the platform where the companies we are dealing with can come to support you in addition to whatever support that we can give as commission under our grassroots policy. We will look at you and see how we make you part of our program”, he said..

Dikko has set his sights on Khadijat doing exploits at the Olympics someday.”Tennis is also an Olympics sport. It is at this age that we can start nurturing the best tennis players to get us to the podium. With the right training, I believe that in two or three years, with the right roadmap you should be having a go at the Olympics and other top competitions and we see how we take it from there. So we need to get more details about her training and the plans”, he enthused. He continued,

“I am happy that your dad is your coach. Most successful tennis players started from their dad as coach. We already have plans for grassroots development, elite development and definitely, we will try to reach you to see what we can do. “We will liaise with the Nigeria Tennis Federation because whatever we have to do, we will align with the programs  of the Federation and make sure they are part of what we are doing. We will try to push you as much as we can to take you to the next level.

“The NSC Chairman instantly assigned an aide Bar. Musa Amadu to follow up on Khadijat and provide updates.

“Since you train in our facility here at the MKO Abiola Stadium, we will come to watch. Be rest assured that we will keep a tab on you. We will follow your progress in the tournaments and circuits. You quite align with our vision to catch them young. We would be doing aggressive grassroots sports development as part of the overall vision, so you have come to the right place at the right time. We will ensure you are properly guided and your dreams activated”, he added.Dikko cautioned her against dumping the nation afterwards.

“Be careful, it is not after we have pushed you up now, tomorrow, you say you are representing another country. You are laughing now, it’s not funny. Not after we have done all the hard work now, tomorrow another country will come and reap where they didn’t sow”, he concluded. Earlier, Amadu had hammered on the need to support Khadijat. He said,

“Nigeria has a potential tennis great here. I know the difficulties that players face when they come out and want to turn professional and create a name for themselves on the circuit. Funding is the key problem here. Without sufficient funding, the player’s natural talent will just fizzle away. So many had fallen by the way side because of improper funding. For a player like her to make the desired impact, we need to get her probably registered in an academy in the Spain because most players making the desired inroads are in academies in Spain, Germany where she can train with other top players and develop.

In Spain, they have all sorts of academies and all sorts of clay courts and she will be able to participate in ITF Junior tournaments and aspire to break into the Grand Slams.

“Competitions will make her to develop appropriately. Without competitions, players become complacent and feel they are the best in the little space they find themselves. It is heartwarming that at 15, she has already conquered Nigeria and with a potential to conquer Africa. But she needs to be properly supported to bring more honour to the country.”While appealing for the Commission’s support, Ohinoyi said,

“We as her parents have done our best, we can no longer take her beyond here. The remaining is in the hands of the National Sports Commission. That is why we are here. We have come because we don’t have the capacity to continue with her.”Khadijat added,

“If I am supported to get up there, I will also like to lift others and help them to make it in tennis. I want to be a source of inspiration to young tennis players in Nigeria.”
