Nigerian naira broke key resistance levels at the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market as the Central Bank of Nigeria implemented the new Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System this week

The Nigerian currency started last week Monday at N1,663/$ to settle at N1,537 at the official market on Friday showing a price gain of N126/$.

The Naira rose sharply in the parallel market, peaking at N1,530/$ on Saturday morning before settling at N1,580/$ on Sunday in Nigeria’s business capital.

Technical patterns on the Naira’s daily chart showed that Naira bulls must claim and break below the N1,500/$ threshold, or bullish exhaustion might push the Nigerian currency above the N1,600 resistance line once again.

The platform, launched on December 2, 2024, addresses long-standing issues of market opacity and inefficiency by facilitating smooth trading and consistency among participants.

The Bloomberg BMatch platform is described as a game-changing tool for the foreign exchange market, according to Omolara Duke, Director of the CBN’s Financial Markets Department. In a circular to banks, she stated: “This initiative represents a significant advancement in ensuring uniformity and seamless operations among market participants.”.

Authorized dealers, such as commercial banks, can place real-time buy and sell orders through the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System ,EFEMS. Transactions are automatically matched, ensuring quick execution and providing real-time visibility for regulators and market participants.

Additionally, Nigeria returned to the international bond market last Monday, raising $2.02 billion through Eurobonds sold in two tranches. The offering was oversubscribed by $9.01 billion, significantly boosting liquidity for the local currency.

The Federal Government issued $1.05 billion in 10-year bonds at a 10.375% coupon rate and $700 million in 6-year Eurobonds maturing in 2031 at a 9.625% coupon rate.

The Central Bank of Nigeria ,CBN, highlighted that the EFEMS platform consolidates trade statistics accessible to the market and integrates seamlessly with banks’ middle and back-office systems.

All dealer banks licensed by the CBN can utilize the platform. The CBN emphasized that EFEMS is a critical tool for maintaining market discipline and reducing counterparty risks.

Participants must establish credit and settlement limits to ensure trades remain within thresholds. Additionally, all trades executed on the platform are final.

CBN Governor Mr. Olayemi Cardoso described EFEMS as a revolutionary step toward achieving price discovery and enhancing market transparency.

“The exchange rate unification is a crucial reform, but it’s only the first step,” he stated. To further improve transparency, rebuild trust, and draw in new investments, the foreign exchange market will start trading on the electronic FX matching system on December 2, 2024.

US Dollar Index ,DXY, which compares the strength of the greenback to a basket of currencies, increased toward 106 points Markets expect a possible rate cut by the Federal Reserve in December, but the US dollar stayed flat following the release of Nonfarm Payrolls ,NFP, data.

The US dollar has significantly strengthened because of President Trump’s second term and the Republican Party’s hold on Congress.

Since the beginning of October, the dollar index has increased by about 6%, which is its seventh consecutive weekly gain.

Investor expectations of dollar-positive policies, like domestic tax cuts and widespread tariffs aimed at regaining US manufacturing competitiveness, have led to the US dollar’s strength.

Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has assured the army’s commitment to addressing security challenges by terrorists in the North-East and North-West regions.

Oluyede gave the assistance while speaking at the Theatre Command of North-East Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The COAS said the army was reviewing its strategies and intensifying efforts to ensure effective response to security threats nationwide.

“We have rephrased our strategies and are bringing in more platforms and resources to support the troops in their positions.

“This is to ensure they have the necessary tools to perform their duties effectively. That’s why I am here. And I think I have achieved that aim. So we are going to go back to Abuja, see how we can add more to their platforms, support them in their positions, and  I am sure we will get better results”, he said.

The COAS noted that the army’s operations have yielded significant results across the country, with peace largely maintained in most regions.

Group Seeks Constitutional Law To Promote Property Right For Women

A Non- Governmental Organizations, NGO known as ACE charity has called for constitutional laws, such as Land Reform Act, to promote property ownership for women.

The Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at ACE Charity, Vivian Ejike made this suggestion in an interview with pressmen at the round table discussion themed,”Transforming the Business Landscape For Rural Women through Inclusive Economic Development,” held in Abuja.

She explained that women face barriers such as inequality and limited access to resources, including land.

Ejike added that cultural and religious settings often confine women to household duties, limiting their economic participation.

She discussed the role of government policies in promoting women’s economic participation.

According to her. communities need to legislate property rights for women to ensure equal access to resources.

She stated that representation of women in political positions is crucial to address women’s economic challenges effectively.

“The House of Representative have what it takes to pass some laws that can actually alter the fate of women in a positive way.For instance, land reforms. I don’t know if there’s a Land Reform Act, but that’s something that we can actually do, or the government can take up, to be able to create laws that promote the property ownership of women.

“ I think there are some laws that are against property ownership, and so we need the government to be able to set laws in place that women can hold, both at different levels. So we also need these communities where they are to be able to give property rights to women.

“So we need it to be legislated, passed into law that women can own lands, women can own properties, women can have equal access to resources to women. So we do believe that if it is something that the government can actually pass into law, then it will also help women to be able to benefit more in the economic participation.

“Also, I think it is necessary for women to be better represented in politics, not just for participation, but also representation, because sometimes the men can only partially give information about what women are going through but if there are women representing us at the helm of affairs, they can say for sure what the problem is when it comes to women accessing economic opportunities,”she said

Ejike while discussing the organisation economic program called “Women Microcredit Program” which was aimed at economically empowering rural women in Nigeria, explained that program provides interest-free loans to women entrepreneurs, with 75% of rural women and 80% of food producers being female.

According to her , ACE Charity addresses economic issues through digital training, financial management education, and formal banking access, leading to a high savings rate among participants.

She added that over 500 women have directly benefited, with 2,000 indirect beneficiaries, and the program aims to expand its reach.

Ejike stated that the program started in 2021 is to address the critical issue of access to finance for rural women.

According to her, the government should ensure gender mainstreaming in in state budget.

“The core of the program is the women microcredit project, providing small, interest-free loans to rural women entrepreneurs. The program aims to engage various sectors, including policy makers, GBV survivors, and other women-focused programs to foster inclusive conversations,” she noted.

Gunners Drop Points in Title Chase After Late Disallowed Goal

0

Fulham and Arsenal won a point apiece in this match at Craven Cottage, but despite coming from behind to draw away from home, it will be Arsenal that will be most disappointed to have not come away with all three.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated possession throughout the game (69%), and after a first-half that saw them attempt just one shot, they had all the chances in the second period. Arsenal had seven shots after half-time, while Fulham sat back and could only muster one shot and one touch in the Gunners’ box.

Raúl Jiménez opened the scoring against the run of play in the 11th minute. His shot was just Fulham’s second touch inside the Arsenal half, but hit the back of the net past the outstretched hand of David Raya.

The strike was Jiménez’s fifth of the Premier League season and 52nd in the competition across history – only Javier Hernández has more among Mexican players (53).

Seven minutes into the second half, Arsenal scored from yet another corner. Declan Rice’s wicked inswinging set-piece found the head of an unmarked Kai Havertz at the back post, who headed down onto the foot of William Saliba to tap home from a few yards out.

Saliba’s strike came four days after he had the final touch on another Arsenal corner goal versus Manchester United in midweek. Overall, it was the 36th goal that the Gunners have scored following corners since the start of 2022-23 in the Premier League, 10 more than any other side.

Arsenal thought they’d won all three points in the 88th minute when Bukayo Saka headed in from close range, but the VAR deemed that assister Gabriel Martinelli was offside before receiving the ball out wide.

With that goal ruled out, it means that Arsenal have only come back to win one of their last 24 Premier League away games under Arteta when they’ve trailed at half time (D5 L18), with that only victory coming at Aston Villa in February 2023 (4-2)

The Minister listed collaboration/partnership, accountability and transparency as key factors to what he described as ‘movement for a better nation’. He noted that there was the need for an inter-ministerial collaborative effort to achieve the national goal. According to him, “involving the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), an office of government, under the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST), is very important, as the Council play a crucial role in Nigeria’s industrialization processes”.

Senator Enoh therefore prescribed for the formation of an Industrial Revolution Work Group with multi stakeholder participation that will identify existing challenges in the manufacturing sector, with the aim of providing possible solutions to them. He said the Multi-Stakeholder Group will comprise of stakeholders in FMITI, Ministry of Solid Minerals, Ministry of Agriculture, the RMRDC and the OPS which is made up of MAN, NASME, NECA and the Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists with him as Chairman and DG Manufactuers Association of Nigeria (MAN) as co-chairman, and the Group will meet quarterly to evaluate progress made as they advance in pursuit of the agenda.

According to the DG, another is the launch of the Raw Materials Information System (RMIS), a comprehensive central database to monitor material flows and support industrial planning; an instrument that provides access to national data on all aspects of raw materials; from deposits, distribution, location, quality, quantity and even security around such raw material resources, and much more. “The RMIS would enable comprehensive tracking and management of raw materials, fostering strategic industrial development”, he added.

“I charge Nigerian youths to look beyond what they call white-collar jobs and focus on skills and we should grow in technology to impact on the society. We should not wait anymore for government.

“We should look for how to also support the federal government and our state governors to see how to reduce insecurity and also support our National Assembly to make laws that can create employment opportunities for young people and also to enact policies that can grow our economy.
