The suspect is alleged to have attacked and killed the cleric after encountering him at his wife’s residence in the early hours of Thursday.

Abia State governor, Alex Otti has banned all forms of payment in primary and secondary schools, marking the enforcement of compulsory  attendance for children of school age.

The governor introduced an imprest account system for  principals and headteachers to manage the running of schools, with specific monthly allowances for their operations.

Otti made this announcement in his New Year speech on Wednesday, stating that “We have stopped all forms of payments in primary and secondary schools. Not even PTA levies should be charged in any public school.

“We have introduced an imprest account system for the running of schools. Headteachers and  principals are  entitled to specific sums every month to manage the day-to-day operations of their schools.

“There is, therefore, no excuse to extort or deny any child the opportunities that come with learning and enlightenment. We shall be strict with enforcement and it will be a grievous mistake to test our will.”

The governor also emphasised the state’s commitment to enforce compulsory attendance for children of school age in schools across Abia.

He added that his administration is set to allocate 35 percent of the entire budget to interventions in the education and health sectors.

Otti said, “We shall fast-track efforts to remake our schools into centres of excellence in effective teaching and learning.

“As you may know, the law mandating all children of school age to be in school comes into effect today. As soon as the new school term begins later in the month, it will be unlawful to find any child outside the walls of the classroom during school hours.”

The governor also shared his administration’s urgency to build systems, rebuild the state and realign governance priorities to reflect the true aspirations of the people.

“We have since evolved a system that prioritises the needs of the downtrodden by paying attention, listening carefully and channelling public resources to where they yield the highest social and economic dividends to the majority by taking on very difficult but economically and socially significant projects in road infrastructure, health and education, waste management and environmental recoveries,” he said.

Governor Otti reiterated the state’s focus on security, warning that his government would not hesitate to deploy its full might against any individual or group posing a threat to the safety of residents.

“We shall also continue to prioritise the security of lives and property, adopting the necessary measures to keep criminals and their sponsors out of the state. Again, I would like to restate that we shall not hesitate to deploy the full might of  government against any individual or group whose activities pose a threat to the safety of our people,” he emphasised.

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, has donated specialised hardware to Edo State Geographic Information Service, EDOGIS, aimed at enhancing its capacity and commitment to Geospatial Data Management.

Director-general, NASDRA, represented by a Senior Director in the Agency, Dr Innocent  Bello, made the donation at a recent critical training session at  EDOGIS premises.

He noted that the gesture was partly in recognition of the outstanding feat of EDOGIS as the winner of the Best State GIS in Nigeria  conferred on it by the federal government  in October, 2024.

He disclosed that the deployment of the hardware in the operations of EDOGIS is aimed at strengthening the agency’s capacity and commitment to enhanced Geospatial Data Management in Nigeria.

The historic handover ceremony of the hardware was during the unveiling of the four-day GRID³ Nigeria Project held recently.

Participants at the event were drawn from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, in Edo State who were trained for four days to enhance their knowledge and capacity in Geospatial Data Management.

The participating MDAs include the Ministries of Education;  Physical Planning Urban and Regional Development; Women Affairs; Environment and the host,  EDOGIS.

NASDRA’s director-general, in an address delivered on his behalf by Dr Innocent Bello, highlighted the country’s achievements since entering the global space community in 2003 with the launch of NigeriaSat-1.

According to him, the country’s milestone laid the groundwork for leveraging remote sensing data to address socio-cultural and environmental challenges.

NASARAWA

From Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Association of United Farmers Benue- Valley, AUFBV, has appealed to the international community, Non Governmental Organisations, NGOs, and people of goodwill to prevail on the Nasarawa State government and the commissioner of police to release the corpses of over 392 farmers, following an attacks seven months ago in Keana Local Government Area.

President of the association, Dennis Gbongbon, in a statement yesterday, also appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Hyacinth Alia and his Nasarawa State counterpart to direct the immediate release of relief materials to surviving victims of the massacre.

He said apart from the incident which claimed the lives of those farmers, students, a female teacher of FGC Keana, serving corps members and about 30 female sex workers are still missing, alleging that on January 1, Alago militia stormed the residence of a man identified as Igbazua, gang raped his wife, Eunice before killing Igbazua in cold blood.

According to Gbongbon, after killing the victim, the hoodlums abducted the wife to an unknown destination, lamenting that farmers in Nasarawa State are going through psychological and mental torture, as their female children are constantly defiled and their wives gang raped by criminals.

He also alleged that the victims, who are now Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, have been  abandone, lamenting that vulnerable IDPs comprising farmers, children, women and the aged are suffering without food, while some are sleeping on bare floors, with children going about naked despite the harsh weather condition.

The AUFBV president alleged that  the police  had confirmed during an interaction with family members of victims that those who sustained injuries during the incident are being treated at a hospital they had refused to disclose seven months after, lamenting that up till now, the whereabouts of about 30 female sex workers and other people are still missing.

Ggbongbon, who lamented that nobody knows where the corpses of the victims were dumped, insisted that over 200 IDPs who were staying in stores at  Keana township market square and those in primary schools, have been missing till date

” The question is where are those people? When the police addressed the people after the genocide, they said some  were injured as a result of gunshots and were taken to the hospital.

” What is the name of the hospital? What are they being treated for? Are the injuries so serious that it could be treated for seven months? Which hospital?” he queried, arguing that even if there was no improvement, their families  should be made to know exactly  what is happening, accusing the police of being economical with the true information.

He called on Governor Alia, Tor Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume to use their positions to prevail on President Bola Tinubu to direct the immediate release of relief materials to the survivors, as well as find lasting solution to the crisis.

The group equally appealed to  the federal government and the international community to add their voices by prevailing on Nasarawa State to direct the release of the corpses  to the bereaved family members for burial, as well as Mrs Eunice Iorzua, who was allegedly gang raped and abducted on January 1 after her husband was murdered.

Telcos: Need For Improved Service Delivery

0

It would be stating less than the obvious to give a damning verdict on the Telcos in Nigeria that they have been totally reckless and unresponsive to the concerns of their numerous stakeholders.

The telephone revolution in Nigeria came in 2001 with the entry of GSM, which was a tremendous turnaround from the hitherto epileptic analogue system with attendant glitches. It may not be convenient at this point to list the numerous concerns and pains of users of that old system prior to the entry of the GSM which indeed brought relief to individuals, corporate bodies with the attendant benefits of being able to reach-out to virtually every part of the World.

For purpose of elucidation, GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications, which is a digital mobile network technology that allows mobile devices to communicate via voice and data. GSM is a second-generation (2G) telecommunication standard that was developed in the 1980s by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute ,ETSI, from reliable internet source. The system has since then advanced beyond the 2G network.

However, growing demands for reliable connectivity in Nigeria’s digital economy, stakeholders have urged telecommunication companies to prioritise robust and inclusive services.

We are impressed that stakeholders including industry leaders, government officials, and consumer advocates have called for enhanced infrastructure and service delivery across the country.

They expressed concerns over frequent network disruptions, slow internet speeds, and limited rural connectivity, which continue to hamper businesses and individual users. All these have been the drawbacks of the system that indeed revolutionised our world of telephony.

President of the Nigerian Digital Economy Forum, Dr. Adewale Yusuf, highlighted the critical role of telcos in fostering economic development. He said: “Telecommunication is the backbone of Nigeria’s digital transformation”.

Yet, inadequate services and poor infrastructure have created barriers to growth, innovation, and digital inclusion.

He noted the increasing reliance on digital platforms for education, e-commerce, healthcare, and financial services, stressing that the current state of telecom services was insufficient to meet the demands of Nigeria’s rapidly growing population.

To enjoy better patronage and give quality service, Telcos must invest heavily in expanding network coverage, particularly in underserved rural areas, as this would enable greater access to digital resources and bridge the digital divide.

They have also been encouraged to implement advanced technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence ,AI, to improve network stability and speed.

We align our position with one expert who noted that the telcos must engage and enlighten the subscribers before reviewing their tariffs. “We are advocating for quality services and that we are not going to compromise in 2025. The telecom operators in Nigeria have failed us and we won’t take that this year.

“They are agitating for tariff increase whereas we don’t get value for what we pay for. If they want to review their tariffs, they must first improve their services and then engage us for every stakeholder to reach an agreement on the amount”.

With increasing online activities, stakeholders emphasised the need for telcos to adopt robust cybersecurity measures to protect users from digital threats.

We urge the Nigerian Communications Commission ,NCC, to work closely with telcos to ensure compliance with service quality benchmarks.

Also the Commission has often expressed its commitment to fostering a thriving telecom sector it must walk the talk by ensuring compliance. This can be achieved by creating an enabling environment for the Telcos.

Given the commitments from operators and regulator, we are optimistic that the telecommunications sector in Nigeria would no longer experience epileptic services which have bedeviled GSM services since its inception.

It has not been totally a tale of woes but there are grounds for improvement in the telecoms sector.

Impeached LG Chairman Accuses Okpebholo Of Victimanisation

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Impeached Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State, Paul Iyoha, has accused  Governor Monday Okpebholo of orchestrating his removal from office.

Iyoha faulted the process leading to his impeachment, noting that neither he nor other chairmen  were given fair hearing before being suspended by the  House of Assembly.

He lamented that they were not  properly investigated or given the opportunity to defend themselves.

Iyoha insisted that he had carried out his duties effectively, ensuring  prompt payment of salaries and allowances to councillors and staff.

The impeached council chair, who disclosed these to journalists in Benin City, expressed confidence that the judiciary would address the situation fairly, while  he continues to pursue legal redress.

Iyoha said his “sins”  was his political allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party’s, PDP, gubernatorial candidate in the 2024 elections, Dr Asue Ighodalo.

He discribed his ordeal as driven by political vendetta rather than legitimate governance concerns, adding that, “my only offence is standing by my party’s candidate instead of supporting Governor Okpebholo, who hails from the same ward in Esan Central as myself.

“As a loyal member of the PDP, I was duty-bound to support my party’s candidate. It is not a crime to work for one’s party. However, the governor has taken my political stance personally and is using his office to punish me.”

Iyoha alleged that the governor openly vowed that he would not be reinstated as chairman, citing a video purportedly showing Iyoha campaigning against him during the election.

“The governor told people that I will never return to my position because I opposed him politically. This is unfair and undemocratic,” he added.

He recounted the challenges he faced during the  governorship election, adding that he faced intimidation, including an attack on his residence, abduction of his brother and threats to his safety.

He claimed these actions were part of a broader effort to suppress opposition voices in the state.

Iyaho added, “Despite the tension, I attended the governor’s inauguration and sent a congratulatory message, as a gesture of respect for the office.”

He however, criticised the administration for politicising governance by involving party figures in official matters.

Economic Foundation: Tinubu Deserves Support  – APC

0
tinubu

President Bola Tinubu deserves the support and patience of Nigerians to consolidate on the deep economic foundation he has laid, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has disclosed.

This came after the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, claimed in his New Year message that the country’s political, economic and security situation is worsening daily.

APC’s spokesman, Mr Felix Morka, in a statement on Thursday, described Obi’s claim as misleading and intended to score cheap political points.

According to Morka, the economy has shown significant progress in the last 18 months, with a steady record of growth, massive balance of trade surpluses and a surge in foreign direct investments.

He attributed this development to increased confidence in the economy, enhanced foreign reserve and a significant decline in debt servicing ratio from 90 percent to about 64 percent.

Morka also noted that the administration is working to ensure that the ongoing reforms deliver their fullest benefits for the country’s sustainable growth and transformation.

“President Tinubu has acknowledged that the cost of food and essential drugs remains a significant concern for many households.

“He has assured that his administration is committed to lowering food prices by boosting food production and promoting local production of drugs.

“He has also vowed to reduce inflation from 34 percent to 15 percent in the course of this fiscal year.

“With the vigour in the administration’s war on corruption, Tinubu is turning the nation’s fortunes around,” Morka said.
