Resident Doctors Decry Abductions, Call For Government Action

Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration, ARD-FCTA, has expressed concern over the frequent abduction of its members nationwide, urging tiers of government to address the situation.

Dr Rahman Olayinka, President of ARD-FCTA, made the appeal on Monday during a press conference to announce the 2024 Annual Health Week and Annual General Meeting/Scientific Conference of the association.

The theme for the event is “Safeguarding the Nigerian Healthcare System”.

Olayinka described the abductions as a major concern, emphasising that the insecurity is one of the key reasons doctors are leaving Nigeria for better opportunities abroad, alongside issues of poor welfare.

“It is no surprise that in Nigeria today, we are witnessing what we call the ‘Japa syndrome’.

“This is because the welfare of healthcare workers has not been adequately addressed by the government.

“Why do doctors seek greener pastures abroad? It’s simple: limited working hours, better remuneration, and access to quality healthcare.

“In Nigeria, however, doctors often work under such extreme conditions that they fall ill themselves and cannot afford proper healthcare.

“It is shameful that as healthcare practitioners, we cannot access the same healthcare system we work in. These unresolved issues have driven many healthcare workers out of the country in search of better opportunities”.

Olayinka also noted that healthcare workers, including members of the National Association of Resident Doctors ,NARD, have consistently engaged the government on welfare issues, including salaries, working conditions, and security.

He, however lamented that these concerns remain largely unaddressed.

“The lack of proper equipment, inadequate working environments, and poor security in hospitals are contributing factors to the migration of health workers.

“These challenges affect the delivery of optimal healthcare to patients across the country”, he added.

Olayinka also shared a recent case of a medical doctor abducted from within a hospital premises.

“We are grateful that the doctor has been released, but we all know the efforts that went into securing their freedom. If security and welfare cannot be guaranteed in the workplace, what do we expect?” he asked.

Turning to broader healthcare goals, Olayinka stressed the need for greater investment in Nigeria’s healthcare system, starting with primary healthcare, to achieve the 2030 Universal Health Coverage ,UHC, target.

“FCT doctors have been actively contributing to the primary healthcare sector through various outreach programmes in areas like Bwari, Gwarinpa, and Kuje.

“These initiatives aim to bring healthcare closer to the people, and they must continue to ensure we meet the UHC target”, he said.

He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, led by Minister Nyesom Wike and Mandate Secretary Dr Adedolapo Fasawe.

He noted their huge contributions toward strengthening healthcare services in the FCT.

“Some health cases can be resolved at the primary healthcare level before escalating to general or tertiary hospitals.

“Investing in the health system, particularly primary healthcare, is essential if we are to meet the 2030 UHC goal”, Olayinka said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that as part of the Annual Health Week, ARD-FCTA will offer free medical services to the public to further support efforts toward achieving universal health coverage.

Sub themes of the event include “The Impact of the Abduction of Medical Doctors on Healthcare Services” and “What Constitutes Medical Negligence and What to Do When Caught in the Web “, NAN.

Stakeholders Vow Continued Fight Against GBV, Proliferation Of Small Arms

By Uche Onyeali

Activists and stakeholders have reiterated their resolve to combat the menace of Gender-Based Violence, GBV, head-on, with a vow to ensure that offenders do not just end in registers and data storage.

President of the West African Action Network on Small Armas, WAANSA, Nigeria, Barr. Temitope Lamidi reiterated the resolve in her paper presentation at an event marking the 16 Days Advocacy Against GBV in Abuja on Monday.

Lamidi in her address titled ‘RevCon4 and Its Relevance to GBV: A Review of the United Nations’ 4th Review Conference on the Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons (RevCon4) and How International Agreements Can Help Prevent Gun Violence That Affects Women and Children,’ highlighted the critical issue of proliferation of small arms and light weapons and its devastating impact on women and children, which she said was the bedrock of domestic violence and abuse against women and girls in society.

According to her “Gender-Based Violence, GBV, disproportionately affects women and children. One of the most destructive tools enabling this violence is the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

These weapons are frequently used in domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual assault.

“Small arms are also the primary weapons in conflict zones, where women and children suffer the most. In these regions, they are not only at risk of direct violence but also face displacement, psychological trauma, and long-term insecurity.

The availability of small arms escalates the severity of violence against these vulnerable groups, making it a critical issue for both international security and human rights.”

She observed that the UN’s Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons aimed to curb the illegal trade and proliferation of such weapons, as well as the need for stronger international cooperation to prevent small arms from fueling violence.

The WAANSA leader noted that while the proliferation of small arms had contributed to global arms control efforts, its focus on gender issues had been limited with women and children as the most affected.

“Recognsing that small arms affect women and children differently is essential in addressing the broader humanitarian crisis.

“At the 4th Review Conference (RevCon4) in 2024, a significant breakthrough occurred. For the first time, RevCon4 acknowledged the gendered impact of small arms proliferation.

“The conference recognised that women and children are often the primary victims of gun violence, both in conflict and post-conflict settings. This was a key moment in integrating gender-sensitive strategies into arms control efforts,” she emphasised.

Lamidi therefore advocated for a more commitment in including gender perspectives in arms control policies, considering the role of women in peace processes, especially in disarmament and demobilisation program, as well as the fact that the proliferation of small arms exacerbates violence against women, particularly in domestic and community settings.

Earlier in his welcome address, the 1st Regional Vice President of WAANSA, Mr. Martin Igwe noted the great commitment of the Nigerian government, relevant stakeholders and civil society organisations in advocating for action against GBV, especially in the last few weeks.

Igwe hinted that WAANSA had been strongly involved in the campaign for the fact that small arms and light weapons are exploited to perpetrate such crimes, hence the urgent need for all stakeholders to work together in eliminating illegal proliferation of small arms in Nigeria and West Africa at large.

He also called for collaboration across all sectors for a holistic and coordinated approach to eliminate violence against women in all ramifications, with maximum punishment without option of fines.
In her address, the keynote speaker, Prof. May Ifeoma Nwoye decried the seeming denial of justice to victims of gender-based violence in most cases through intimidation and primordial sentiments like cultural exploitation and protection of family name.

She noted that domestic violence lead to some anti-social activities like forced prostitution, forced marriage which she tagged unpardonable crime against women and the entire humanity.

Prof. Nwoye propelled the adaptation of what she called “CTTD” (Closer-to-the-Door) approach for the women, especially those could hardly control their mouths or temperament during altercation with their spouses.

She, however, urged the authorities to come up with stronger measures to ensure that GBV victims get justice and also ensure conducive atmosphere that gives women and children more protection.

Aryna Sabalenka has been voted the WTA Player of the Year for the first time after the Belarusian won two Grand Slam titles and secured the year-end world number one ranking, the governing body of women’s tennis said.

After successfully defending her Australian Open trophy in January, Sabalenka won the U.S. Open crown in September for her third Grand Slam title and leapfrogged Iga Swiatek to top the world rankings a month later.

She also won tournaments in Cincinnati and Wuhan to end her 2024 campaign with four titles.

International tennis media also voted for Paris Olympics gold medallists Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini as the year’s top doubles team, while American Emma Navarro was named the season’s most improved player.

Ranked 38th at the end of 2023, Navarro broke into the top 10 in September after winning her first title in Hobart and making six semi-final appearances, including at Flushing Meadows, during the season

Lulu Sun won the Newcomer of the Year award following the New Zealander’s run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon as a qualifier, which helped her climb to 40th in the world after being ranked outside the top 200 in January.

Former world number two Paula Badosa, who ended her 2023 season early due to a back problem that cast doubt about her future in the game, was named Comeback Player of the Year.

West Ham Earn crucial win to increase pressure on Wolves Boss O’Neil’s

0

West Ham edged to a narrow Premier League victory over struggling Wolves to ease the pressure on under-fire head coach Julen Lopetegui.

However, the result is only likely to increase the scrutiny over Gary O’Neil’s position as Wolves manager, with his side remaining 19th in the table after three consecutive defeats.

Tomas Soucek’s second-half header from Jarrod Bowen’s corner had set the hosts on their way.

Matt Doherty had superbly levelled from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross for the visitors, before Bowen scored West Ham’s decisive second goal with a placed effort during a frenetic spell in the second-half.

In between, Hammers winger Mohammed Kudus correctly had a goal ruled out for offside following a video assistant referee (VAR) review, while Wolves appeared to have genuine complaints when Emerson’s shove on Goncalo Guedes did not result in a penalty in their favour after a similar review.

O’Neil’s side were further enraged by the manner of Bowen’s winning goal with home defender Konstantinos Mavropanos seemingly fouling Wolves’ Uruguayan centre-back Santiago Bueno in the build-up.

The result leaves West Ham 14th in the table, nine points clear of the bottom three.

Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative ,PCNGi, yesterday said that it had invested more than 450 million U.S Dollars in the Compressed Natural Gas ,CNG, value chain.

Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, Project Director and Chief Executive Officer ,CEO, PCNGi, disclosed this during the 9th Edition of the Nigeria Energy Forum ,NEF2024, Day 2, Virtual Event in Lagos. The theme of the 9th Edition of NEF is: “Energising Sustainable Industrialisation”.

According to the PCNGi CEO, the amount goes into things like mother stations, daughter stations and refueling stations as well as conversion centres which are starting to spring up across the nation.

Oluwagbemi, who was represented by Mr Tosin Coker, the Head of Commercial, PCNGi, said the initiative had successfully converted more than 10,000 vehicles from petrol to CNG.

“By 2027, the initiative will have converted more than one million vehicles using petrol to CNG”, he said.

On incidents of explosion of vehicles using CNG, the CEO assured Nigerians that it had taken precautionary measures with different agencies of government to ensure safety.

Mrs Ibironke Olubamise, National Coordinator of the GEF Small Grants Programme ,SGP, managed by UNDP, said the SGP was investing in youth energy innovation for economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Dr Daniel Adeuyi, NEF Group Chairman, said “the event featured three super sessions on Energising Industrial Revolution, Community Climate Action by GEF-SGP UNDP and Clean Energy Innovations.

“The sessions are to share lessons learnt from real life projects and build capacity of young entrepreneurs and cross-industry professionals”.

Mr Joseph Osanipin, the Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council ,NADDC, said that the council had trained more than 4,000 auto technicians on how to convert petrol vehicles to CNG.

He said the council had started campaigns to sensitise Nigerians on the advantages of using CNG to power their vehicles. “CNG can guarantee cleaner environment, it is cheaper and affordable”, he said.

Mr Oluwatobi Ajayi, the Chairman and Managing Director, Nord Automobile Ltd., said the company was established to tackle the growing demand for vehicles in Africa and reduce import dependency.

“Today, we’ve been able to identify the assets the federal government owns and we are trying to track them.

‘We actually do have assets, not just locally but globally as well and it’s very important that we establish visibility over what the federal government owns before we can start talking about managing them.

“So, we want to try to minimise the waste, minimise the overlaps and help to improve output”, he said.

Engr. Adekunle Makinde, NEF Co-chair, said, “the 9th Africa Energy Innovation Challenge ,AEIC, attracted over 140 entries from 25 different countries across Africa, with over 99% of entries as first-time participants.

A circular signed by Acting Executive Chairman, Michael Ango, noted that the newly formed unit will focus on the assessment and collection of income and other taxes.

It also stated that the unit will oversee compliance and enforcement of tax obligations for individuals classified as HNIs.

The Acting Executive Chairman also urged taxpayers within this category to comply with their obligations and settle any outstanding liabilities within two weeks.

“For our HNI taxpayers, we believe it is in our mutual interest that they comply voluntarily and we have identified over 10,000 of such individuals, with income in trillions of Naira, to whom we have started to send notices.
