Joel Ajayi

The Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawale, has affirmed that Nigerian youth have the constitutional right to protest, but warned that protests involving the destruction of property or disruption of public activities will not be tolerated.

On Monday morning, young demonstrators under the aegis of the Take-It-Back Movement defied police warnings and staged protests in Abuja, Lagos, and other states across the country.

Reacting to the development shortly after his addressed at the Annual Management Conference on  Monday in Abuja, the Minister acknowledged the importance of peaceful protest in a democratic society.

“Protesting to express your concerns is a right recognized all over the world,” he said. “No one is stopping protests—it’s the citizens’ right. If I had the time, I would even join them. It helps the government hear and address their demands.”

However, he emphasized that protests must remain peaceful and should not involve damage to public infrastructure.

“What the government will not condone is the destruction of infrastructure, which negatively impacts the economy and national development,” he stated. “Don’t block roads or hinder public services. We are willing to listen to the youth. If I have the chance, I’ll be there to speak with them.”

He concluded by reiterating that the government is not against protests, but urged protesters to respect boundaries and avoid actions that could endanger national progress.

By Uche Onyeali

Bayelsa State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has denied allegations that former First rst lady Patience Jonathan illegally detained 15 of her former domestic staff at the Okaka Custodial Centre in Bayelsa State.

There were reports that the former first lady’s workers ha been in illegal detention since 2019 over alleged theft of seven gold bangles and jewellery, five Samsung air conditioners, two sets of upholstery chairs, and six Samsung flat-screen televisions valued at N200 million.

They were also reportedly slammed with 18 counts bordering on conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit felony, and burglary.

However, reacting to the report in a statement, yesterday, spokesperson to the correctional centre, Isari Gbosi Tombara said the claims were “unfounded and being spread to tarnish the good image of the service”.

Tombara said there were also claims of a closed door meeting between the former first lady and top correctional officers of the NCoS in Bayelsa.

He said there was no such meeting between the former first lady and top officials of the command as speculated.

The spokesperson added that the inmates “have also been treated fairly and humanely while in custody” and their fundamental human rights have been respected.

“They were in court on March 10 and 11,  2025, and the last time they attended court was Thursday, April 3, 2025 where the matter was adjourned to April 17, 2025.

“The command noted that no one can be admitted into any custodial centre in Nigeria without a valid warrant from a competent court of jurisdiction; on this note, they are not in our custody illegally as they were all accompanied with valid remand warrants from the court.

“The Nigerian Correctional service further informed that the command is peaceful and that the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Okaka, remains one of the most peaceful custodial facilities in the country.

“Hence, they should discountenance the said reports as they are intended to cause chaos where none exists”, the statement added.

The command assured that the service under the leadership of Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, acting controller general of corrections, is poised to ensure the safe and humane custody of all legally interned persons as well as their effective reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration into the larger society.

From HASSAN JIRGI Damaturu

Yobe State government has discredited a report widely circulated on the social media, alleging that Boko Haram terrorists were moving towards Damaturu, the state capital.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam ,Retd, in a statement made available to AljazirahNigeria in Damaturu, described the report as false, misleading, attributing it to the handiwork of mischief makers in the state.

The purported intelligence report titled ‘Immediate Security Alert,’ was making the rounds online, claiming that suspected Boko Haram fighters were advancing towards Damaturu.

According to Abdulsalam, the information, which he said did not emanate from his office, should be disregarded in its entirety as having no basis.

He also urged the public, especially residents of Damaturu town, to remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear.

AU Underscores Need For Adequate Investment In Peace Fund

0

Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of African Union Commission, AUC, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, has underscored the need for adequate investment in Africa Peace Fund to bolster growth.

Adeoye, gave the advice in his address in Abuja, recently, during his working dinner with the theme: “Africa and global shift in governance, peace and security; a compelling agenda for ECOWAS and AU legacy solutions”.

Adeoye, said “The Peace Fund today by member states is $400 million endowment, but we have only the mandate to spend the interest.

“How much is the interest? $27 million a year, but we need $15 million a month in Somalia, like I said. So the challenges are enormous, we have to use our own resources.

“We have to call on the big powers on our continent, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola,

Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco, among others. These are what we call the tier one countries in the African Union system.

“They pay the largest, but they can do more for the sake of this country because for sure the days are over when we will be looking out to the West or to the North.

“South-South cooperation is what we need that can make it happen”.

He stated there is nothing called the United States of Africa, saying African countries should work closely together to build the continent from the bottom up, not the top bottom.

According to him, no one could impose the United States of Africa from a conference and hope the people would buy it, “it must be built from grassroots”.

“I think this is what the African Union is doing with its regional integration agenda, building with the rest and working closely for the United States of Africa.

“In the long term, it will come naturally. You already have a United States of Europe because you can walk into any part of the 27 European countries without much ado, no immigration.

“Such will not happen overnight. ECOWAS is a leader in that, and we can encourage more of the communities to do so”, he added.

He commended the call for the Committee of Ten for the United Nations Security Council Reform, adding we have to keep walking the talk and invest in an inclusive, legitimate UN Security Council.

He promised to partner civil society more in the peace and security domain, advising it champion not just first generation of political and civil rights, also women, economic, social, and cultural rights.

“Nigeria is the only country in Africa that has continuously served in the African Union Peace and Security Council.

“Nigeria has continued to champion peace and security in all ramifications, the huge view we have for peace and security can be reduced because peacekeeping has become an industry.

“We are not in the peacekeeping mode. We are in the peace enforcement mode, and we have to enforce peace as the Nigerian forces have been fighting against Boko Haram”, he advised.

Earlier,  Nigerian Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Ambassador Musa Nuhu, said the gathering had become apt to advance democracy and effective governance, as well as boost human and peace dividends, which is critical for AU Member States.

“What we are bringing forward is African problems, and that implies we have to take ownership and ensure we mobilise peace process.

“We must also provide the political will in order to tackle our challenges”, Nuhu said. NAN

Lawmaker Faults BSU Tuition Increment, Says Measure Capable Of Increasing Hardship

0

From Henry Ibya, Makurdi

National Assembly member for Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency, Terseer Ugbor has faulted the alleged plan by management of the Benue State University, BSU, Makurdi, to increase tuition fee by 80%.

The lawmaker, who made this position known while reacting to alleged proposal in a statement by his Media Aide, Fred Dagu, at the weekend in Makurdi, argued that if not checked the measure was capable of igniting unwarranted students protest, general strike as well as increasing hardship on parents and condemned the proposed increment.

He argued that while it was the prerogative of the Benue State Government to raise school fees to enhance the quality of education, government on the other hand must set up reforms meant to alleviate the financial burden of most especially the disadvantaged students, stressing that the economic hardships aggravated by inflation alongside insecurity have both adversely affected the livelihoods of numerous families describing the proposed increment as ill-timed.

The Kwande/Ushongo National Assembly representative, expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of educational policies in the state that promote higher education, advocating for thorough reforms in policies of higher education in the state which promotes academic excellence.

He also lamented lack of reward system for exceptional students and the deficiency of sponsorship for advanced degrees through the Benue scholarship Board, advising the state government to establish a loan programme for Benue students pursuing higher education to complement the Nigeria Education Loan Fund,NELFUND, initiated by the Oresident Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Ugbor also called on the Benue State government to revive the state Scholarship Board which has gone comatose, arguing that advancement of education is essential to societal progress and urged Benue State government to prioritise policies that render the cost of education more affordable and appealing to all students.
