Children’s Wellbeing: UNICEF, Katsina Govt Sign 3-year Work Plan

0

United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and Katsina State government have signed a three-year work plan to enhance the wellbeing of children in the state.

Chief of Field Office, Kano,  UNICEF, Mr Rahama Mohammed-Farah made this known at the signing of the plan in Katsina, yesterday.

The UNICEF chief said the work plan was not just a document, but a testament to the shared vision for a brighter future for every child in Katsina State.

Mohammed-Farah, who was represented by the  Health Manager, Dr Sereke Seyoum-Deres, said the work plan covers the health, nutrition, education, child protection, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, sectors, and social policy.

“Children are the future of this great nation and investing in their wellbeing is not only a moral imperative, but a strategic decision that will yield long-term dividends for the state’s development,” he said.

The field officer said polio virus remains a significant threat to children’s health in the state, adding that “eradicating it must be our top priority in 2025.

“We must dedicate all our efforts and resources to mobilising communities, raising awareness and ensuring that every corner of Katsina is reached.

“The aim is to encourage parents to vaccinate their children.

“The Katsina State government must take the lead at the ward, district and local government levels to address vaccine refusals,” he added.

Mohammed-Farah urged the state government to leverage its own resources, explore public-private partnership and strengthen community-based initiatives to ensure that no child is left behind.

On reducing the growing number of out-of-school children, he said  government should improve the quality of early learning and increase school readiness from the primary school level.

He said UNICEF would remain committed to supporting the state government to ensure that the remaining seven local governments attain Open Defecation Free, ODF, status, so as to be declared an ODF state.

In his remarks, Governor, Dikko Radda said the partnership underscored  government’s commitment to improve the lives and wellbeing of children in the state.

He said  government would continue to focus on children’s education, in recognition of the critical role it plays in nation building.

Radda added that his administration had expended over N100 billion in the education sector on teachers recruitment, support to science and technical education, scholarship award and schools construction among others.

Rivers Crisis: Wike’s Spokesman Accuses Ada George Of Taking sides

0

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Minister of Federal Capital Territory ,FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, has accused a former Governor of Rivers, Ada George, of taking sides in the crisis rocking the state.

Olayinka made the accusation in a statement in Abuja yesterday while reacting to comments attributed to George on the crisis.

The News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, reports that George had, at a news briefing on Wednesday, accused Wike of orchestrating the ongoing political crisis in Rivers.

The former governor also blamed Wike for the imposition of a State of Emergency and the appointment of sole administrators in all 23 local government councils.

In his reaction, Olayinka told George and his Rivers Elders and Leaders’ Forum to blame themselves for taking sides when they should have been neutral.

“The moment an elder takes side in a conflict between two children, such an elder has lost the right to intervene and resolve the conflict”, he said.

Olayinka said that George was among those clapping for the suspended Gov. Siminalayi Fubara when he was sitting on the salary and other entitlements of members of the State House of Assembly.

He also alleged that George did not caution Fubara when he was orchestrating the burning and demolition of the Rivers House of Assembly.

The spokesman added that the former governor also saw it as normal for three members to run a House of Assembly of 32 members.

He expressed surprise that the same George was now speaking on who should be blamed for the state of emergency imposed on the state.

“When President Bola Tinubu intervened in the crisis and resolutions signed by all parties, it was this same Ada George that described the president’s intervention as ‘executive rascality’.

“He went further to say that the intervention by the president contravene the doctrine and practice of separation of power.

“Even when the Supreme Court ruled and made clear and unambiguous pronouncement over the Rivers crisis, Ada George and his so-called elders still saw no reason to call Fubara to order”, he said.

Olayinka stated that it was their failure to speak up when it mattered most that had now resulted in the imposition of emergency rule in the state.

According to him, genuine elders sit in a position of neutrality when there are conflicts among younger ones.

This, he said, would enable them to enjoy credibility and respect while sitting on the high table to resolve the issues.

“The state is now open for prospective investors in this sector to take advantage of it. I believe that this Bill that l have assented to today will improve our power sector which is very key because, you can’t do any investment without power.

“Power is very key and I can tell you today that we have the population and now the legal framework for investment to thrive. The State is now open for investments”.

He said that the Child Rights Amendment Law 2024, had provided more safeguards for children, adding that from now, no child should be employed or used for domestic help aside their homes or family environment.

“It also establishes an Adoption Service Department in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development to address the challenges of prospective adopting parents. Our children are the future and must be protected.

“These Bills that have been assented to will protect our vulnerable populations, improve quality of life, promote sustainable development and environmental protection, attract investment and increase our IGR.

“We must recognise that our work is far from over. We must now ensure the effective and efficient implementation of these laws. I, therefore, urge all stakeholders to work together to guarantee successful outcome,” he said.

Edun Advocate Accelerated Customs Reforms To Strengthen Intra-African Trade, Economic Resilence

0

Joel Ajayi

In a bold move to revamp regional trade and bolster economic resilience, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has called for accelerated customs reform across West and Central Africa.

This call to action was made at the opening of the Fourth Conference of Development Partners of the World Customs Organization for West and Central Africa (WCO-WCA) on Wednesday in Abuja, highlighting the need for deeper structural reforms to unlock the region’s vast economic potential.

Edun noted that intra-regional trade accounts for just 12% of the region’s total trade, despite a combined population of 450 million and a GDP approaching $1 trillion. While the Nigerian Customs Service recorded a 90% year-on-year revenue increase and exceeded government targets by 20%, he highlighted the need to build on this momentum through deeper structural reforms.

The Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to modernisation, citing the forthcoming Single Window Project expected in early 2026, and urged broader adoption of World Customs Organization instruments such as the Authorised Economic Operators programme and the Advanced Ruling system.

He also emphasised the importance of donor coordination and long-term technical assistance to support sustainable reform.

Many of the initiatives, HM Edun noted, are supported by concessional World Bank loans already reflected in the national budget and borrowing plan.

The two-day conference brought together customs leaders, donors, and trade experts to align on regional strategies for enhancing trade facilitation and economic integration.

As the region moves forward, one thing is clear: accelerated customs reform is a critical step towards unlocking West Africa’s vast economic potential. With the right policies and partnerships in place, the region can unlock new opportunities for growth, trade, and economic resilience.

Thus, the Fourth Conference of Development Partners of the World Customs Organization for West and Central Africa serves as a timely platform for stakeholders to align on regional strategies and drive progress towards a more prosperous and integrated West Africa.

Newcastle In Driving Seat As Champions League Spots Hot  Up

0

Newcastle United’s bid to get back into the Champions League is gathering pace with Eddie Howe’s side looking at the Premier League table knowing their destiny lies firmly in their hands as they prepare to host beleaguered Manchester United on Sunday.

Last season, Newcastle played in Europe’s elite club competition but fell by the wayside in the Premier League as the squad tried to cope with a bruising schedule.

Although they finished above Manchester United, the Old Trafford side won the FA Cup to qualify for the Europa League leaving Newcastle out of European competition altogether.

Without the distraction of a continental campaign this season, Newcastle have diverted their attention to competitions at home and won their first domestic trophy in 70 years as they lifted the League Cup by beating Liverpool.

That has not diluted Newcastle’s focus on the league where they have won their last three games to sit in fifth place.

Arsenal’s famous victory over Real Madrid at The Emirates in midweek confirmed that five Premier League teams are guaranteed Champions League spots next season.

As things stand, fourth-placed Chelsea, Newcastle (both 53 points), Manchester City (52) and Aston Villa (51) are vying for two spots, although Fulham (48) and Brighton & Hove Albion (47) are not completely out of the picture with seven games left.

By Ekpo Duke, Calabar

African Development Bank ,AfDB, has pledged substantial investment to boost agriculture and healthcare services in Cross River State

The AfDB President, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, gave the pledge during a state banquet organised in his honor by the state government.

Adesina outlined plans to support primary healthcare delivery in addition to supporting the state with the launch of the Special Agro Processing Zone project.

He commended Governor Bassey Otu, noting that the governor is indeed a “passionate, action-driven, and accountable leader, doing so much in infrastructure”.

He noted that with what Governor Otu has done in partnership with Afrixem Bank for the Bakassi Deep Seaport project, Cross River State will soon be a an important logistics and industrial processing hub beyond Nigeria, covering the entire West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.

On healthcare, he pledged to support the Governor’s efforts in the revitalization of primary health centers and the state health insurance initiative.

“We will help ensure that primary healthcare centres are not only revitalised but connected digitally to enable seamless access and portability of health records”, he said.

He also advocated for the adoption of a sustainable franchise-based business model for healthcare delivery, designed to improve nationwide access and quality.

Adesina expressed his delight over the launch of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones ,SAPZ, in Cross River, describing the project as a game-changer for the state’s economy.

In his remarks, Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s focus on driving economic independence and reducing overdependence on federal allocations.

He outlined three strategic pillars: security, food security, and energy security, as central to unlocking sustainable development in the state.

Governor Otu revealed that several dormant state-owned assets were being recovered and revitalized, significantly improving investor confidence and making Cross River one of Nigeria’s most attractive investment destinations.

He also announced plans to integrate Cross River into regional economic corridors with Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea while expanding agricultural productivity through large-scale cocoa, cassava, and other crops.

Reflecting on his recent annual vacation, he joked that he felt “younger and more energized”, ready to intensify efforts toward the state’s transformation. Otu thanked his deputy governor and cabinet members for their stewardship in his absence and described the state’s progress as divinely inspired.

Former Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke, in his welcome address, said the banquet was a convergence of visionary leadership. He described Governor Otu as a “turbocharged” developer and lauded his commitment to infrastructure and economic growth.

Turning to Adesina, Duke described him as “Africa’s number one technocrat”, hailing his landmark initiatives like the electronic wallet for farmers and his legacy of driving agricultural transformation across the continent.

He praised both leaders for their alignment in vision and their dedication to inclusive development. “Dr. Adesina is not just a leader he is a divine pathfinder, illuminating Africa’s future”, Duke declared.
