2027 Presidency: ADC Targets 30m Votes

0

By MBACHU GODWIN, Abuja

African Democratic Congress, ADC, has boasted that it will deliver it’s presidential candidate in the 2027 presidential election with 30 million votes .

This is even as the party bemoaned the political apathy in the country’s previous election, adding that it will break the jinks in the forthcoming election.

Speaking to Journalists at the party’ s Global submit in Abuja , National Chairman, Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu said it was appalling for Nigerian president to be elected into office with 8million votes with over 99 registered million voters.

Nwosu who took a swipe on the presidency over the economic hardship in the country said enough is enough, nothing that his party is repositioned to rescue the country .

He revealed  that the ADC is mobilizing the 18 years and above, youths as well as those who refused to vote due to poor leadership and absence of democratic dividends to make up the targeted  30 million votes .

Nwosu said: “We have in Nigeria 99 million voters as recorded before the 2020, before the 2023 general election. People are not voting. People are tired. We are mobilizing them.

“We are mobilizing people that just turned 18. As a matter of fact, as of now we have about 170 million voters.

“We are mobilizing people that just turned 18. We are mobilizing people that have refused to vote. And we have people who have the capacity to do the mobilization. A new beginning has come.

“Our governors, our senators, for the first time Nigerian citizens have told me to tell them that we are going to shame all of you.

“We want to pack all of you in the room and then jettison you so that we can lay a path to the new Nigeria we want to build and the kind of quality leadership that they want to enthrone.

“So, all of them will be locked up in the villa and the people will take their country through the ballot box.

“The apathy has always been there. In 2019 election, we had 60 something million voters, how many voted? In 2023, we had like 70 million voters. How many voted? Less than 25 million. So the apathy has always been there. But we have devised a system”.

On coalition, he said

“We are bringing many political parties together and I can assure you without missing a word, you’re going to see the biggest coalition of patriots, people-driven coalition.

“I’ve been dealing with political party leaders for more than eight years and calling on them that we have to come together. But now we want Nigerians to drive it. They will all come. The citizens of Nigeria are going to shame them”.

Book Launch: Gbenga Hashim Hails Lamido’s Integrity, Advocates Return To Value-based Politics

It was a day of reflection, legacy, and renewed political conviction as top political figures gathered in Abuja for the public presentation of a new book by former Jigawa State Governor and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Sule Lamido.

Among the many tributes, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate and long-time political associate of Lamido, delivered a powerful and personal speech, describing Lamido as “a man of deep convictions, integrity, and a true patriot whose life reflects the ideals Nigeria desperately needs today”.

Hashim emphasized that while wealth and status may fade, character remains the lasting hallmark of leadership. “Money will fade away”, he said, “but character and integrity will remain.

Sule Lamido embodies these enduring values. He has remained true to his principles and to the nation”.

Recalling their decade-long relationship, Hashim offered rare insight into their shared political history.

“President Obasanjo said he met Lamido in 1999, but I have known him for over 30 years. We stood side by side during the struggle against military rule. On the day the PDP was founded, we drove together to Minna in his car—driven not by ambition, but by a shared vision for Nigeria”.

The event drew some of Nigeria’s most prominent statesmen, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other leading voices from across the political spectrum, underscoring the significance of Lamido’s contributions to national development and political thought.

Hashim’s address resonated deeply with the audience, coming at a time when public trust in political leadership remains fragile. His remarks were not only a tribute to Lamido but a subtle critique of Nigeria’s current political culture.

“Nigeria needs this kind of example—leaders who are consistent, tested, and rooted in service.

This is how we can chart a new and credible path forward”, he said.

Obasanjo and Hashim praised the author for his courage in publishing the book, but averred that the Job to fix Nigeria is yet to finish.

Lead Ijaws To APC – Eradiri Urges Gov Diri, Dickson

A former Labour Party ,LP, Governorship Candidate in Bayelsa, Mr Udengs Eradiri, has called on Gov. Douye Diri and his predecessor, Sen. Seriake Dickson, to integrate the Ijaw nation into the government at the centre.

Eradiri, in a statement yesterday in Yenagoa, told the two political leaders that there was no better time than now to move the Ijaws into the ruling All Progressives Congress ,APC.

Describing the current period as the time of political realignment, Eradiri said that the Ijaws could experience political alienation if Diri and Dickson failed to flow with the political reality.

He specifically said that the two political leaders should join APC in order to create the required opportunity for the Ijaws to play crucial roles in the corridors of power.

Eradiri, a former President of Ijaw Youths Council ,IYC, said that taking such a political decision would attract more infrastructural and manpower development.

According to him, the Ijaw nation will gain nothing by being in opposition to the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, but will only be left to wallow in the political wilderness.

He appealed to Diri and Dickson to forgo personal interests and see the bigger picture, insisting that their joining APC would be in the overall interest of the Ijaw nation.

Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa, reminded them that their past political fathers, living and dead, used to align with any government at the centre.

“The time for political realignment for the ijaw nation is now.

“The current political equation in Nigeria presently will alienate the ijaw race if we don’t strategise immediately and take a decision to join the ruling party.

“I am calling on Sen. Seriake Dickson and Gov. Douye Diri to join APC now to guarantee the Ijaw nation a place in decision-making at the centre.

“This is no longer the time for bravado. There is nothing or no point to prove being in opposition to President Tinubu’s government, as it will only alienate Ijaws politically.

“Our fathers had always aligned with the centre and Ijaws, no matter how bad, had always had some say in government. But today, we have no voice in the APC-led Federal Government.

“Dickson being a former governor and now senator and Douye Diri, a former senator and now governor, will give the Ijaws a voice at the national government if they heed this clarion call and move to APC”, he said.

Eradiri called on them to jettison their personal interests and take the step, saying that it would be in the overall interest of Ijaw nation.

“Ijaws cannot be onlookers. Our resources sustain Nigeria; so we must be strategic to advance the development of Bayelsa and Ijaw nation”, he said.

2027: Group Mobilises For Makinde, Inaugurates  State Coordinators

Brave New Vision Support Group, a group mobilising  support for Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo State ahead of  2027 presidential election, has inaugurated state coordinators for 17 southern states.

The Convener and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, during the inauguration, said that Makinde remained the best option for  PDP  for  2027 presidential election.

According to Pearse, the group decided to call for  Makinde’s presidency after a thorough evaluation of his  education , skills, work experience, record of performance and  vision for Nigeria.

“Gov. Abiodun Oluwaseyi Makinde is an amiable personality. He is straightforward and forthright in dealing with all he comes across.

“He is a compassionate person who takes his professional life as responsibly as he takes his personal life. He is an intelligent man.

“Gov. Makinde is a God-fearing man. Nobody is perfect ,but Makinde has made a name for himself as a man of integrity. We want a viable, young Nigerian to come and lead us to fix Nigeria for us.

“One of the reasons why we are doing this is to let people know that PDP is alive and well. If Gov. Makinde gets the ticket of the PDP to run for President, he will win and be the next President.

“Our appeal and support is based on our strong conviction that Seyi Makinde is the PDP’s best option to defeat any candidate which may be presented by the other political parties for the 2027 presidential race”, Pearse said.

According to him, Makinde, with huge credentials and verifiable performances in private and public services, has the capacity to fix the country.

Pearse said that Makinde would restructure the country for enhanced governance, accountability, security, economy, power generation, education among others.

He appealed to potential delegates to the PDP National Convention  to cast their votes for Makinde to brighten the chances of the party in 2027.

Speaking , Alhaja Atinuke Babs- Olorunkemi, the Chairperson of the support group, said Makinde had the capacity  to meet the expectations  of Nigerians, describing him as a leader with  empathy.

Also speaking, the Convener, Progressive Youths for Makinde Presidency, Prince Chris Odianarewo, urged Nigerian youths to queue behind Makinde in 2027 for hope and opportunities.

Speaking on behalf of the tate Coordinators, Mr  Marcel Anyanwu, the Imo Coordinator,  urged all coordinators to begin massive mobilisation for the Oyo governor.

According to Chief Victor Obiofu, the Rivers Coordinator of the group, Nigeria needed  a leader with character like Makinde, to tackle its challenges.

Also, Hajia Oluwatoyin Oyegbori, the Oyo State Coordinator, urged Nigerians to unite for Makinde  and work towards his emergence as the next President.

Chief Effiong Myong, the Cross Rivers Coordinator, who noted that the battle for 2027 presidency would be tough, urged all stakeholders to come together and work  to actualise Makinde presidency.

Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran, a former South West PDP Zonal Secretary, said that Nigeria would be better with Makinde in 2027, describing him as  humane.

“Our major concern should be voting out APC in 2027. We have someone who has the qualities that people want. Makinde will bring humanity to governance and alleviate the sufferings of ordinary Nigerians.

South-East  PDP To Reconsider Relationship With Party If Denied Secretary Position

South-East bloc of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, has threatened to reconsider its relationship with the party if the zone was denied the position of the party’s National Secretary.

This is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of South-East PDP Zonal Executive Committee ,ZEC, meeting held yesterday in Enugu.

The document was signed by Chief Ali Odefa, Chairman, PDP, South-East Zone.

He said the ZEC unanimously recommended Mr Sunday Udeh-Okoye for the office of national secretary of the party.

“Therefore, we hope that this time around, the position of the South-East PDP regarding the Office of the National Secretary is accorded the honour and immediacy it deserves.

“However, in the event that our position is not promptly implemented by the party, the South- East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward”, he said.

Odefa urged the PDP National Working Committee ,NWC, to uphold its decision at its 600th meeting on April 29 which allowed the party’s Deputy National Secretary to function as Acting National Secretary.

This, he said, would be pending the time a substantive national secretary would be confirmed.

“The South-East ZEC further noted that the zone had to go through this process for the umpteenth time, unlike what obtains in the filling of vacant national offices by other zones.

“It is recalled that the South East ZEC met in October 2023 and nominated Udeh-Okoye to serve out the remaining term of the National Secretary.

“This position was reaffirmed during the Feb. 20, 2024 meeting of the PDP South-East ZEC. We also reiterated this during the meeting of ZEC in Enug today”, Odefa said.

The zonal chairman said that South-East had consistently served as PDP stronghold from the inception of the party.

He said that while the party had been losing key members following post-2023 general election, the South-East PDP was at the vanguard of strengthening the party by rallying major opposition figures into its fold.

“In Enugu State, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party is back to the PDP; two members of the House of Representatives are equally back from Labour Party.

“Furthermore, PDP seats in the Enugu State House of Assembly have grown from 10 at the inception of the Assembly to 20 today”, he said.

He recalled that on March 21 the Supreme Court brought to a close the protracted legal tussle over the position of the National Secretary of the PDP.

According to him, the apex court, in its ruling, held that the issue of the leadership of a political party was the internal affairs of the affected party.

“The PDP Governors’ Forum, at its April 14, 2025 meeting held in Ibadan recommended that the South-East PDP should nominate a candidate.

“This followed the consideration of the report of the panel it set up to review the Supreme Court judgment.

“Their position is that the candidate would serve out the remaining tenure of the National Secretary of the Party zoned to the region’’, Odefa said.

Many Paraguayan children dream of seeing their national team play in a World Cup and now, after visiting the FIFA Museum in Asuncion, it feels a little more real as they look forward to their country being back on the biggest stage of all.

Paraguay have played in seven World Cups, including the first in 1930, but their last appearance was back in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals.

In 2030 they will be back, and playing in Asuncion at the tournament, which will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco but will also feature matches in Uruguay and Argentina to commemorate the centenary of the first World Cup, hosted and won by Uruguay.

FIFA is holding its 75th Congress on today outside the Paraguayan capital, where CONMEBOL headquarters are located, and has sent its treasures – trophies, medals, jerseys, and soccer boots – to South America.

“I feel like I’m on the field touching the cup and that I’m playing. I feel like Paraguay won it”, nine-year-old Franco Caballero told Reuters, as he excitedly walked through the exhibit minutes after its inauguration.

Paraguay, which played in four consecutive World Cups between 1998 and 2010, have not returned to the tournament since it was played in South Africa, where they lost in the quarter-finals to Spain, who went on to lift the trophy.

In the current South American qualifiers, Paraguay are in fifth place, which would give them a place in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“Honestly, I’m very excited because we used to watch the World Cup and Copa America finals on TV, we see the players raise the trophy, and now I’m seeing it in person”, said 12-year-old Mateo Torres after touring the venue.

Chelsea Set To Stick With Maresca For Next Season

0

Chelsea head coach, Enzo Maresca is expected to lead the team into next season even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The club hierarchy, led by co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, plan to reserve judgement on the 45-year-old Italian until the summer of 2026.

That is despite ongoing uncertainty over whether Chelsea will secure a top-five finish following their 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.

With two rounds of the Premier League season remaining, Maresca’s team sit fifth, but they are only ahead of Aston Villa on goal difference, with matches at home to Manchester United and away at seventh-placed Nottingham Forest to come.

This has been Maresca’s first season in charge, after joining from Leicester City in June 2024.

The top five from the top flight will qualify for the Champions League, with the Premier League benefiting from an extra place because of its teams’ strong performances in Europe.

Chelsea have also reached the Europa Conference League final and will play Real Betis in Wroclaw, Poland, on 28 May.

If Maresca and his team fall short in the Premier League, injuries throughout the winter period will be considered a significant factor.

IMC Defends 75% Fee Hike As NIN Enrolment Hits 120 Million

0

National Identity Management Commission ,NIMC, has enrolled 120.4 million Nigerians for the National Identification Number ,NIN.

This is just as the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote also defended the hike in the fees for date of birth modification.

The NIMC boss also hinted that NIMC infrastructures have witnessed improvement.

Coker-Odusote said the expansion in its infrastructure has led to a 40% reduction in corruption within the Commission.

She explained that NIN enrolment remains free for all citizens and legal residents.

But she said the costs for data modifications have been increased, while verification fees have been lowered to reflect current economic realities.

The NIMC boss explained that the cost of modifying the date of birth was hiked by 74.8% from N16,340 to N28,574.

According to her, the new rate does not reflect the country’s inflation rate, which rose to 24.23% in March 2025.

NIMC’s NIN retrieval service on the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data ,USSD, platform rose from N20 to N50.

She said, “We are people-centric in our dealings. Some prices were too high, and we had to adjust them.

“There were various extortions with outrageous pricing. NIN enrolment is free, but if you want to modify your data for any reason, there are costs associated”.

She also explained how NIMC successfully integrated its systems with 120 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies ,MDAs, including the NHIS, NPC, FIRS, Banks, Security Agencies, Correctional Services, School Feeding Programme, NASCO, among others.

She also said under her leadership, NIMC cleared a total debt of N280m, making the agency debt-free.

According to her, 1,300 staff members have been trained and promoted as part of the ongoing transformation to enhance service delivery.
