FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Mr Umoru  Abdullahi, whose wife and newborn baby were detained at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, has denied receiving  financial assistance from the Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo, to aid the discharge of his family.

He dismissed reports that the governor had settled the outstanding bills and facilitated their discharge through his Special Adviser on Health Matters, Precious Ogboru, and Executive Assistant, James Iorkusah, who claimed  to have visited the family at UBTH.

Abdullahi refuted this yesterday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Press Centre in Benin City, in contrast to media reports that the Edo State government has settled his hospital bills.

Abdullahi, an indigene of Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area, said he paid N240,000 at UBTH before his family was released after being detained for 21 days.

He denied ever receiving any assistance from  the  governor through any of his aides.

According to him, “I was discharged by the UBTH management on compassionate ground after my initial payment of N200,000.

“At no time during my ordeal at the hospital did I meet or receive any form of assistance from the state government through  Ogboru and Iorkusah, who claimed to have visited our family at UBTH over my inability to offset the cesarian section bill.”

He  added that his wife was hurriedly sent out of the hospital when the UBTH authority heard that  government was coming to help him out.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Joshua Uwaila told AljazirahNigeria that Abdullahi and his family had  already been discharged before the governor’s delegates came.

AljazirahNigeria recalls Mr Abdullahi had last Tuesday appealed to kind-hearted Nigerians and the governor to help in discharging his wife and newborn delivered through cesarean section.

His wife and newborn were admitted on March 20 and were discharged on April 10.

He expressed gratitude to the media and compassionate Nigerians for their prompt intervention which led  the hospital management to release his wife and baby without  additional financial burden after the initial N200,000 deposit.

From Abdullahi Idris,Dutse

Jigawa State governor, Umar Namadi has flagged off the 2025 dry season rice  programme with the launch of  Jigawa Rice Value Chain Development Initiative, aimed at positioning the state as Nigeria’s leading rice producer.

The programme targets an annual rice production of 3.6 million metric tonnes through the cultivation of 1.2 million hectares of land.

Speaking at the event in Auyo Local Government Area, Governor Namadi described the launch as a turning point in the state’s agricultural development agenda.

“This event is more than just another agricultural initiative—it embodies our collective determination to position Jigawa State as Nigeria’s agricultural powerhouse and a key contributor to national food security,” he said.

The governor noted that Jigawa is already the second largest rice producing state in Nigeria and that the new programme would deepen this achievement.

Under the initiative, 58,500 farmers will benefit from subsidised inputs such as certified seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals and access to irrigation equipment, including 20,000 water pumps (10,000 solar-powered) and 10,000 fuel-powered to ensure efficient water supply during the dry season.

Governor Namadi also said the state had set an ambitious but achievable target.

“Our goal is to reach 500,000 hectares of dry season rice cultivation by 2030, with the long-term objective of cultivating 1.2 million hectares annually to produce 3.6 million metric tonnes of rice,” the governor added.

He  highlighted the state’s broader mechanisation agenda, including the procurement of 360 tractors, 70 combined harvesters and the establishment of  Jigawa Farm Mechanisation Service Company to provide affordable mechanisation services to farmers.

To promote transparency, Governor Namadi said the state is implementing the Jigawa Input Voucher System to ensure accountability in input distribution.

In his keynote address, Technical Adviser on Agriculture, Dr Saifullahi Umar described rice as “the bedrock of food security, a critical driver of household incomes and a strategic commodity in our national agricultural transformation agenda.”

He explained that the programme was built around five pillars – access to inputs, extension services, financing, climate-smart practices and robust data systems.

He revealed that the 58,500 participating farmers would be grouped into 1,170 clusters for ease of monitoring and support, as each cluster will receive hands-on training in best agronomic practices, irrigation efficiency and financial management.

From Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Benue State government has pledged to sustain collaboration with local and international non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and other partners in the fight against Gender Based Violence, GBV.

The  Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Ann Itodo said this during a one-day dialogue with community leaders, organised by  Concerned Women International Development Initiative, CWIDI,  in Makurdi.

Itodo, who was represented by the Acting Director of Women Affairs in the ministry, Mrs Magdalene Andor, recalled that in commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day, the ministry and its staff moved round the streets of Makurdi and major markets to sensitise the people on the need to stop GBV, in line with this year’s theme, ‘Accelerating Action to End All Forms of GBV.’

She said the ministry had in the past interfaced with owners of orphanage homes, educating them on how to handle such cases, synergise with civil society organisations, visited IDP camps to carry out awareness on how to handle and improve GBV cases, as well as carried out sensitisation through radio programmes and personal interaction with groups to create more awareness.

The commissioner  disclosed that the ministry is currently working with stakeholders to synergise and educate citizens through advocacy to ensure equity in all aspects of women’s lives.

Itodo commended CWIDI for doing a great job in the state, acknowledging that organising a programme that involves traditional rulers who are not just the custodians of culture, but also give direction to their subjects and their wives, is a right step in the right direction, expressing optimism that with the involvement of the monarchs, success in the fight against GBV would be achieved by 80 percent.

Also speaking, the State Commandant of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Bitrus Larai, represented by DSC Benedict Sunday, assured that in addition to stepping up synergy with other security agencies and organisations, the command would intensify sensitisation for people to know the dangers associated with GBV.

On her part, Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Blessing Ityohuun, and the Assistant Director from the Ministry of Justice, Sunday Sabe, emphasised the need for synergy among organisations, describing the dialogue as apt.

FIDA particularly identified finance and funding as a major challenge in the fight against GBV and other cases, appealing to international partners to support CWIDI with funds to help local organisations carry out awareness.

It assuring that FIDA’s doors would always remain open to listen to complaints of victims who suffer gender-based violence and other related issues.

In her opening remarks, Senior Programme Officer of CWIDI, Mrs Becky Gbihi  said the dialogue was put together to amplify the organisation’s responsibility, which is to ensure that no woman suffers injustice in the hands of their male counterparts, stressing that the aim of the dialogue is to proffer solutions to cases of GBV.

Vice Chairman, Oyo State Council of Obas, Oba Olushola Alao, has said that there is no supremacy dispute between the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade and Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.

Oba Alao, who is the Olugbon of Ile-Igbon, stated this on Sunday at the palace of Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade while paying a royal visit to him.

News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, recalls that Oba Owoade was crowned on April 5, as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

Speaking with journalists shortly after a close door meeting with the Alaafin, Oba Alao, encouraged all traditional rulers in Yoruba land to be united for the development of Yoruba race.

The Olugbon said he had heard a lot of things after the Alaafin’s coronation, “but I will tell you one thing, Alaafin will remain Alaafin of Oyo while Ooni will remain Ooni of Ife. So there is no dispute,” he said.

According to Oba Alao, his visit to the Oyo palace was to pay homage to Alaafin whom he described as “a leader, a man of wisdom, who chooses his words carefully and is equipped academically.

“Due to our past relationship, traditionally, culturally and historically; Olugbo, Aresa and Olukoyi see Alaafin as our affiliation and our tide, we have a very long bond from the days of Oyo empire till date.

“I and Oba Owoade discussed issues that are progresive to Oyo state government, Oyo state traditional council, and to entire Yoruba traditional council,” he said.

Oba Ajao maintained that the objectives of the traditional rulers were to work towards promotion and preservation of Yoruba cultural values,

He added that Oyo State Traditional Council has been working together with the governor, to achieve this mission, noting that there’s no way traditional rulers could do things on their own.

“We must have a synergy with the government and we are doing that. These are parts of the things we share in common.

“And I know for sure that we have a new leader, a new era to move Oyo State Council of Obas forward, to move Oyo state as a whole forward, in synergy with the state government,” Olugbon stated. NAN
