Ukachukwu Is Unknown To Anambra APC, Says APGA Stalwart

From CHARLES ONYEKWERE, Awka

Coordinator of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Media Warriors Forum, Evangelist Chinedu Obigwe, has described the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate for the forthcoming November 8 election, Nicholas Ukachukwu, as a “floating politician” unknown to the party.

Reacting to a purported statement credited to the  Imo State governor , Hope Uzodimma, suggesting that there is no alliance between President Bola Tinubu and Governor Charles Soludo, Obigwe stated that Ukachukwu is not known to the president or even members of the APC in Anambra State.

According to him, Ukachukwu will continue “floating” until after the well-deserved declaration of Governor Soludo as the winner of the November 8 governorship election.

He dismissed  reports allegedly originating from Governor Uzodimma, claiming it was orchestrated by the “drowning political camp” of Ukachukwu, now known in Anambra as Ikuku Ojor.

Obigwe insisted that Uzodimma did not issue the statement, asserting that he does not know Ukachukwu.

“The person lured with money by the drowning political camp of  Ukachukwu to act as if he is speaking on behalf of Governor Uzodimma is Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the South East Chairman of the APC.

“I say this based on what transpired during President Tinubu’s recent visit to Anambra. If not for the magnanimity and large-heartedness of  Soludo,  Ukachukwu would not have been allowed to come anywhere near the visiting governors, ministers and the president.

“Amusingly, he used the opportunity given to him by Governor Soludo to exchange greetings with APC governors who looked at him and asked who are you?’

“He then introduced himself as the APC governorship candidate in Anambra. Even after that, they still treated him like a complete stranger,” Obigwe said.

He  stated that President Tinubu’s visit to Anambra exposed Ukachukwu as a total stranger in the APC, alleging that he used money to hijack the party’s ticket in the state.

Lagos APC Primaries:  Party Members Reject Results, Protest In Agege

Some members of the All Progressives Congress,APC, in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State  yesterday staged a protest over the results of last Saturday’s primaries of the party.

The party members, chanting words rejecting the outcome of the primaries during the protest at Oke-koto area of Agege, said the announced results did not reflect the will of APC members in the area.

They said Mr Babatunde Azeez and Mr Abiodun Akinola, announced as chairmanship candidates for Agege LG and Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area,LCDA, respectively, were imposed on  party members.

Mr Sabitu Kamorudeen, Chairman of 2023  Presidential Campaign Council ,PCC, in Agege, who led the protest, said most party members were against the emergence of the candidates for the two council areas.

According  to him, the two candidates were hand-picked by some party leaders to serve their selfish interests.

“We are here to challenge those using President Bola Tinubu’s name to impose their candidates.

“The results are not only misleading but are  a gross misrepresentation of the democratic will of our party members in Agege and Orile-Agege.

“The outcomes are not  a reflection of due process but  reek of  manipulation and abuse of party machinery by entrenched interests, who have hijacked our local politics”, he said.

Speaking , Mr Adetunji Akinyemi, the spokesperson PCC Orile-Agege LCDA, said that  members of the APC in the area  acknowledge and respect the supremacy of party directives and structures.

According to him, such deference must not be misconstrued as passive endorsement of tyranny or authoritarianism cloaked as leadership.

“We cannot support a scenario where a single individual, wielding inordinate influence, positions himself as the sole arbiter of who rises or falls within the party in Agege.

“That is not party discipline it is political capture, and it is antithetical to the democratic ethos of our party, the APC.The political climate in Agege and Orile-Agege is uniquely troubling,” he said

Also Mr Akeem Ashiru, one of party leaders in the area, urged the state council of APC, political leaders and members of the party’s  National working Committee to act on the matter and check what he called hijack of the party in Agege and Orile Agege.

“This is Lagos and this is Agege, it is not a political estate to be inherited or transferred at will.

“For many of us,  Agege is not only our constituency,  it is our home.We have no ancestral retreats beyond these communities and so we must insist on justice, fairness and the preservation of peace”, Ashiru said.

Asanat Lawal, a member of the group, said that their allegiance remained with the broader APC.

According to her, party members are committed to the party and second-term bid of President Bola Tinubu, but  will not remain silent in the face of oppression.

“We will continue to resist every attempt to destroy our democratic foundation of our local politics and we will defend the rights of our people to be represented by individuals of their choosing not by fiat, coercion or hereditary succession”, she said.

NAN reports that the party  has inaugurated an appeal committee to look into  alleged malpractices, manipulation and allegations raised by aspirants and delegates that participated in the primaries .

The party advised discontented aspirants to submit their appeals to the committee.

NAN reports that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, had fixed July 12 for  the local government election in the state.

In a bold step to further enhance security of lives and property across the state, Ekiti State Government has begun the process of recruiting over 500 personnel into the Amotekun Corps, Agro-Marshals, and Anti-Gracing Task Force.

The recruitment process which is geared towards reinforcing the state’s ability to curb criminal activities, protect farmers as well as enforce anti-gracing laws effectively, began in Ado- Ekiti on Tuesday.

Speaking with journalist during the screening exercise held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado- Ekiti , the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier-Gen Ogundana Ebenezer , Retd, said the exercise is a critical step towards beefing up the security architecture of the state and expand personnel aimed at addressing the growing security challenges across the country, particularly in rural communities.

Describing the exercise as a proactive step by Governor Biodun Oyebanji to step up security of lives and property, government infrastructures and agricultural development, General Ogundana  said the move underscored the state government’s dedication to enhancing the operational capacity of local security outfits to combat crime, protect agricultural sector and rural communities, as well as address the security concerns related to open gracing thereby contributing to the reduction of farmers-herders conflicts.

Gen. Ogundana emphasized that the recruitment drive is not only a response to security threats but also a proactive step in ensuring the realisation of government’s vision for a robust agricultural sector by strengthening security around the farms and in the grassroots.

He explained that the screening exercise and the recruitment process for the new personnel is being carefully considered for local knowledge and familiarity with the terrain, stressing that deploying security personnel that are well familiar with their environment would greatly improve surveillance and intelligence gathering.

The Special Adviser explained that after the screening exercise, all the successful candidates would undergo comprehensive training to ensure that they are fully ready and equipped to tackle the state’s security challenges effectively and professionally.

“The screening exercise going on here today is for those that have been shortlisted to be recruited into Amotekun, Agro-Marshals, and Anti Gracing Corps in Ekiti State, which is a proactive measure by Governor Oyebanji to recruit more men into the local security outfits.

“After the screening, we will train them and after that return them to their respective local government areas to go and protect the area, and you are also aware of the Governor’s Agriculture projects, which is  creating employment for the youth and since most of the forests been used by the criminals as hideout had been turned to farms, we have to protect the farmers and the farms and that’s why we are increasing the strength and capacity of Amotekun in the state”, he added.

The  young men that turned up for the exercise were drawn from across all the local government areas of the state with input from their community leaders.

Lamido Urges Tinubu To Settle N45bn Debt Owed Abiola

0

A former Governor of Jigawa, Sule Lamido, has urged President Bola Tinubu to settle a N45 billion debt allegedly owed to late Chief Moshood Abiola.

He made the appeal during the launch of his autobiography, ‘Being True to Myself’, held yesterday at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.

Lamido said the payment would symbolically and morally close the June 12 struggle and Abiola’s unjust treatment following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.

He stated that the June 12, 1993, election is widely believed to have been won by Abiola.

Lamido said, “Before concluding, I appeal to President Tinubu to finally close the June 12 chapter.

“In his book, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida acknowledged Abiola’s victory in that election.

“When I visited him, he also confirmed Abiola is owed N45 billion. He was doubly punished: denied both the presidency and his due”.

Lamido urged the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, who represented Tinubu, to deliver the message to the President.

“Please tell the President to pay the Abiola family the N45 billion. That will finally close the June 12 chapter”, Lamido emphasised.

The News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, reports that Babangida recently confirmed, after 32 years, that Abiola had indeed won the historic June 12 election.

The annulment marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic history, triggering political unrest and accelerating Babangida’s resignation.

Earlier, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, described Lamido’s autobiography as a candid, insightful reflection on Nigeria’s political journey.

Abubakar, represented by ex-INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, stressed the value of such books in promoting civic awareness and preserving history.

NAN reports that the book was launched by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, with Dr Iyorchia Ayu serving as the reviewer.

Ayu described the work as “a personal encounter with power and leadership.”

Other guests included Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Tinubu Not Coercing Lawmakers To Join  APC – Senate Leader

Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has said that President Bola Tinubu was not coercing opposition lawmakers to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress ,APC, contrary to public criticism.

He said this during plenary on Tuesday, while justifying the defection of all the three Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, senators from Kebbi to the All Progressives Congress ,APC.

Bamidele noted that the ruling party “is now running a government of national unity”.

Bamidele spoke in the presence of the APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje; Governor of Kebbi, Alhaji Nasir Idris and APC National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Sulaiman Argungu, among others, who were at the Chamber.

Those who defected are Sen. Adamu Aliero ,Kebbi Central, Sen. Yahaya Abdullahi ,Kebbi North, and Sen. Garba Maidoki ,Kebbi South.

Bamidele noted that their defection was based on the overriding public interest and had nothing to do with turning Nigeria into a one-party state.

According to him, the ruling party will not close its doors to anyone intending to join the party.

“In the same way, we will not also discriminate against anyone either on the basis of religion, tribe or any other factor. Our doors will continue to be open for more people to join at all levels.

“In the meantime, we will continue to work with the members of the minority political parties.

“It is not by sheer coincidence that virtually all political parties from the Young Progressives Party ,YPP) to the Peoples Democratic Party have to join the ruling APC.

“Even APGA, which has not joined the ruling party, has also graciously nominated and donated a minister of state to the Federal Government of Nigeria under the APC administration.

“That is to say, what we are now running is a government of national unity,” he said.

Bamidele specifically commended the defectors for their decision to join the ruling APC while reflecting on how the PDP was coercing members of the opposition parties to defect to its fold when it was in government at the federal level.

He said: “We were all in this country when PDP was the ruling party. We saw all the things that happened under the PDP in an attempt to get more states, more seats in the Senate and more seats in the House of Representatives.

“We are not at the polls. No one is being coerced.

“If anyone is coerced, the person is definitely not Sen. Adamu Aliero. All of us know that the person cannot be Sen. Yahaya Abdullahi that will be co-opted.

“Neither will Sen. Garba Maidoki with a stint in the private sector before he ventured into politics will defect to APC without clear conviction.

“As far as we are concerned, Sen. Yahaya Abdullahi that I know will rather stay in opposition and be very loud.

“They all recognise that this is not the time for grandstanding. This is the time for all of us to work together to take Nigeria to the next level.

“One of the defectors has been privileged to be the Gov. of Kebbi, precisely from 1999 to 2007”.

“For us in APC, this is a wonderful development. For those who are keenly watching political developments, rest assured that at the end of the day, this can only be for the good and greatness of Nigeria.

“To the rest of our colleagues on the minority isle, we will continue to work together for the progress of Nigeria.

“I say it again for the umpteenth time. Those who refer to this parliament as a rubber stamp parliament should note that we are at a very critical stage of our national life when all hands must be on deck”.

From Owen Akenzua, Asaba

President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Delta State Governor,  Sheriff Oborevwori and his wife, Tobore, were among the dignitaries who paid tribute to the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, yesterday.

The funeral service was held at St Paul Anglican Church, Kiagbodo, in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. Other dignitaries in attendance include Governors Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State).

Also present were the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, and his wife, Ezinne Catherine; former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Senators Joel-Onowhakpo Thomas,  Ede Dafinone,  Henry Seriake Dickson, and Chief Rufus Ada George; and the Minister of Regional Development, Engr Abubakar Momoh, among others.

President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, expressed sadness over the passing of the elder statesman, and respected leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF.

Tinubu said: “Pa Clark was a passionate advocate for resource control, economic and social justice. He was a beacon of courage who spoke for the Niger Delta and the nation.

“His views on national issues were distinct and patriotic. He believed in a united Nigeria. As an astute politician, even his opponents never doubted his integrity”.

Former President  Jonathan described Pa Clark as a great nationalist who lived in full validation of human dignity.

“He was a staunch advocate for freedom and national pride. Pa Clark was more than a father and leader; he was an ambassador, an audacious voice for the voiceless and a steadfast preacher of justice and minority rights.

“Whether as a federal commissioner or later as an elder statesman, he remained a courageous and fearless advocate for equity, justice, inclusivity and good governance”, he said.

The Senate president said, “Pa Clark was a pan-Nigerian and Pan-African who fought for all, including the minorities.

“He has left a legacy and a responsibility to his followers. He did well for Nigeria and for the Niger Delta. The Senate valued him and his memory will remain a part of our national history.

“He stood tall when others bowed for convenience. He belonged to a generation that believed in the eternal cause of freedom. He was a testament to conviction and principles.”

Governor  Oborevwori, on his part, described Pa Clark as fearless, vocal, bold, assertive, and unrelenting in speaking truth to power, adding that he never remained silent in the face of abuse of power, corruption or injustice.

Oborevwori, said: “Pa Clark lived a fulfilled life and will be remembered for his legacy and contributions to nation-building.

“He was a teacher, educator, politician and astute public servant, an example of a life dedicated to service.

“He was the voice of the oppressed in Nigeria’s political space. We have lost a powerful voice in the Niger Delta. He fought for improved living conditions, food security, quality education, public safety and accessible healthcare services.

“We must unite, particularly in the Niger Delta, to continue his legacy. I am glad our leader, former President   Jonathan is here. We must rally around him and remain united, because it is only through unity that we can achieve more for our people.

“When we allow division through personal sentiments, we will hinder progress.

“Our Senate president is one of us. We will continue to support you because that is how we can succeed as a nation.

“May God bless Nigeria with more leaders like Chief  Clark and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Earlier, the Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Cyril Odutemu, delivered a poignant homily, referencing Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is better than riches.”

He lauded Pa Clark’s virtues, calling him a champion of integrity and a man of impeccable character.

The archbishop highlighted Clark’s selfless service, noting that he used his legal expertise pro bono to advocate for the poor and vulnerable. “His dedication to justice and integrity earned him the reputation of a true voice for the Niger Delta”, he said.

He reminded Nigerians that “a good name is more valuable than material wealth”, saying  “we bring nothing into this world and we will take nothing with us when we leave.”

He voiced concern over the destructive influence of false prophecies in Nigeria, urging repentance and a return to the values of integrity and righteousness that the nation’s founding fathers upheld.

Referencing Matthew 6:33, the cleric called on Nigerians to prioritise their relationship with God, seek his kingdom above all else and live lives that are pleasing to him. He urged the church and the nation to strive for a right standing with God.

Gov Okpebholo Urges DSS, IGP To Arrest Kakor

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU,  BENIN CITY

Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo has  called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi to initiate the immediate arrest and prosecution of the President of  Neo Black Movement of Africa, Olorogun Ese Kakor, over alleged forgery of official state government documents.

In the petition, the governor accused Kakor of forging government documents, which falsely claimed that he was given authorisation to provide assistance to schools in  Edo South Senatorial District. The act, he said, was not only fraudulent, but a direct assault on the integrity of the state’s administrative processes.

The governor, who described the act as criminal and deceitful, said the alleged forgery was carried out in connivance with certain low-level civil servants within the state bureaucracy.

Aljazirah Nigeria recalls that, the Edo State government on Monday said it has commenced the necessary legal consultations towards taking a decisive legal action against the Neo Black Movement, also known as Black Axe, over the recent spate of killings and cult-related violence.

This was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor  Okpebholo, Fred Itua.

He noted that those civil servants implicated in the forgery have already been identified and taken into custody, and a police investigation is currently underway to determine their level of culpability.

Okpebholo vowed that all those found culpable would be prosecuted by the law.

He said, “As Edo State governor, I am calling on the IGP and the director-general of DSS, to initiate the immediate arrest and prosecution of  Kakor over alleged forgery of official state government documents.

“Those civil servants implicated in the forgery have already been identified and taken into custody, and a police investigation is currently underway to determine their level of culpability. All those found culpable would be prosecuted by the law.”

Okpebholo  insisted that the land title on which the NBM headquarters was erected in Edo State has been revoked, citing the organisation’s alleged involvement in violent crimes and unlawful activities within the state.

The governor urged  the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS to intensify their efforts in curbing the operations of groups allegedly involved in criminality and to ensure that those responsible for these acts are brought to justice.

Bill Seeking Amendment Of TETFUND Act Scales Second Reading

0

By Paul Effiong

House of Representatives has passed a Bill seeking  the  inclusion of Inter–University Centres among the beneficiaries of the tax imposed under the TETFUND Act, for second reading.

The Bill with the title: “Bill for an Act to Amend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act, No.16, 2011 to Provide for the Inclusion of Inter–University Centres among beneficiaries of the Tax Imposed under the Act; and for Related Matters HB.1754,” was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin  Kalu and eight other lawmakers.

The inter-university centres in the country, include institutions such as -the National Mathematical Centre, NMC, Abuja;  National Institute for Nigerian Languages, NINLAN, Aba, Abia State; Nigerian French Language Village, NFLV, Badagry, Lagos State; and National Arabic Language Village, Ngala, Borno State.

In his lead debate on the general principles of  the Bill , one of the co-sponsors,  Tolani Shagaya informed  that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, was established under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, No.16 of 2011 in order to provide supplementary support for the general development of public tertiary institutions.

According to the lawmaker, the scheme has grown to become one of the most impactful institutional frameworks in the  education sector through the improvement of infrastructure, provision of learning, instructional tools and equipment, training and re-training of both academic and non-academic staff that is fostering research and innovation in the nation’s public tertiary institutions.

He,  however, said   Inter-University Centres, which are established by Acts of the National Assembly to serve all universities have been excluded from this support framework, despite the fact that they play  unique and indispensable roles in advancing tertiary education across Nigeria.

He  informed that these  centres was designed to fill critical academic, linguistic and research gaps, as well as  serve as specialised knowledge hubs for all, even as he also expressed disappointment that  currently, there is no support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, even though their academic and training  directly supports the same university system that education tax is meant to fund.

While calling for an amendment into the establishment Acts, he stressed that such will ensure equity, inclusion and academic relevance.

He also expressed the hope that  the swift passage of the Bill will enhance the overall development of the  tertiary education system.

According to him, “Inter-University Centres support the entire university ecosystem by offering centralised expertise, hosting advanced research, conducting nationwide language training and enhancing academic cooperation across institutions. Yet, because they are not classified as traditional universities, polytechnics or colleges of education, they have been excluded from the funding streams that sustain similar tertiary institutions.”

FG Reaffirms Commitment To Safe, Innovative Migration

0

By Joel Ajayi

Federal government has restated its commitment to promoting safe and innovative migration as a tool for sustainable development, while condemning irregular migration, particularly among youth.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, made this declaration yesterday in Abuja during the inaugural Thematic Meeting of the Rabat Process—Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development—hosted by Nigeria through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons ,NCFRMI.

The meeting, themed “Youth, Innovation and Education: Driving the Future of Migration”, brought together member countries to chart a progressive path forward on migration issues.

Professor Yilwatda emphasized the need for strengthened cooperation among participating countries to address shared migration challenges and harness the benefits of migration for economic growth and development.

“Nigerians are contributing on the global stage in sports, music, health, and more”, he said, highlighting the role of migration in showcasing national talent and potential.

The Minister called for enhanced policy coordination, data sharing, and joint initiatives to ensure humane and effective migration governance across the Euro-African corridor.

“Youth remain a dynamic and transformative demographic, with enormous potential to drive innovation, economic development, and cross-border collaboration”, he noted.

He added that as migration patterns evolve, so do the opportunities for young people to engage in initiatives that reduce the risks of irregular migration while promoting sustainable alternatives—such as legal migration pathways, skills transfer, and diaspora engagement.

Citing demographic projections, Yilwatda stated, “In less than seven years, Africa will account for 20% of the global population. Over 55% of the continent’s people will be under 20, and 75% of the world’s under-35 population will live in Africa”.

This, he said, presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly the need to create around 20 million jobs annually to accommodate the growing youth population—factors that will drive increased mobility for education and better living conditions.

He further stressed that African youth make up a significant proportion of those migrating to Europe, driven by economic opportunity, education, and the quest for improved livelihoods.

“This meeting aims to explore how the potential of African youth can be maximized as key contributors to development both in their home countries and in host nations”, he added.

He called for strategies to disincentivize irregular migration, which endangers lives and violates human rights, while promoting regular migration, education and training in origin countries, innovation transfer, youth empowerment, and increased diaspora involvement.

This forum offers youth-led organizations a platform to actively engage in migration discussions, explore ways to empower young migrants, and integrate their voices into migration governance”, Yilwatda said.

He urged Rabat Process member states and private sector actors to invest in the initiative to drive economic growth and shared prosperity.

Also speaking at the event, Spain’s Ambassador-at-Large for Migration Affairs and co-chair of the Rabat Process, Pilar Jimenez, commended Nigeria for taking a leadership role.

“With the focus on youth and innovation, this initiative will help young people avoid risky journeys while enabling them to succeed safely,” she said. “We want you safe, and when you are safe, you become an asset to your country”.

in her remarked, Ambassador -at Large- for Migration Affairs of Spain Pilar Jimenez,, said that Spain’s migration policies were designed with active listening to the needs and concerns of African foreigners, their governments, and societies.

She recalled that the Spanish Prime Minister, launched the new Spain-Africa strategy in December 2024.

The agreement, according to her,  seeks equal partnership between Spain and Africa, and inspires the entire Europe-Africa relationship.

“The strategy includes promoting regular migration, sustainable development, and shared prosperity,” Jimenez said.

She added that Nigeria’s leadership in the Rabat process, focusing on youth education, innovation, and regular pathways to prevent irregular migration was apt.

Also speaking, Gautier Mignot, Head of European Delegation to Nigeria, said that EU supports awareness-raising campaigns and community-based programmes to inform young Nigerians about the risks of irregular migration.

“EU promotes a comprehensive approach to migration, working with partner countries like Nigeria.

“Also EU is committed to supporting Nigeria in migration management and legal migration processes,” Mignot said.

In his remarks, Hon. Tijani Aliyu, Federal Commissioner of Migrants Affairs at NCFRMI, reiterated Nigeria’s efforts to improve migration governance.

“With the right investment in education and innovation” he said, “migration can become a powerful tool for empowerment and national development”.
