NAPTIP, ICMPD Alert Public On New Human Trafficking Tactics

0

National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, ICMPD, have raised concerns over emerging trends in human trafficking in the country.

NAPTIP and ICMPD raised the alarm at the unveiling of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Violence Against Persons Vanguard Students Clubs at Ihogbe College and Oba Akenzua II Secondary Schools in Benin City, yesterday.

It would be recalled that the initiative,  ICMPD’s School Anti-Trafficking Education and Advocacy Project, STEAP, is being supported by the Government of The Netherlands.

Speaking at the event,  the Zonal Commander of NAPTIP in Benin, Mr Sam Offiah, said  traffickers are increasingly exploiting the digital space to lure young Nigerians into ‘modern-day’ slavery.

“We are seeing an upsurge in internet trafficking. Traffickers now use fake online profiles, phishing tactics and blackmail with nude photos to manipulate and coerce victims.

“Students are now primary targets, that is why we have taken this campaign straight to  schools,” he said.

Also speaking, the  Edo Project Officer of STEAP for ICMPD, Elvis Ederibhalo, stated that 75 percent of victims rescued in recent surveys were of school age, adding that, “this underscores the need for early intervention.

“Since traffickers are recruiting directly from schools, we also decided to start from there. These clubs will not only educate students, they will empower them to educate others,” he said.

Ederibhalo noted that the project, currently ongoing in Edo, Delta, Enugu, Ogun, Borno States and the FCT had completed one year of its four-year cycle.

The project officer said  apart from the students, teachers and parents are also being trained as stakeholders to tackle the ugly trend.

He said  human trafficking issues had already been built into the national curriculum through ICMPD’s collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education.

Ederibhalo added that the schools involved in the initiative would receive infrastructural support in order to enforce student participation.

“Sometimes students get discouraged because there are no basic learning facilities. Through this project, we shall provide furniture, teaching aids and other materials,” he said.

In their remarks, the Principals of the schools, Mr Ighodaro Egbe and Michael Ipogah, described the project as timely and well-intended.

They said  students have become the prime targets of traffickers and expressed the need for awareness. NAN

Solid Minerals And The Challenge Of Illegal Mining

0

Nigeria’s solid minerals sector has become one major concern to many citizens across various divides. This indeed borders on the illegal and uncoordinated exploitation of the sector by both foreigners and their Nigerian collaborators.

Fervently, former Labour leader and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Interior, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, decried the continued abuse in the sector that ought to be firmly in the grips of the government.

It is indeed not the first time this sort of alarm is being raised on the nation’s solid mineral fields which have been hijacked by those he described as “retired Generals” in collaboration with foreign crooks.

Oshiomhole addressed the media recently, recalling that as National Chairman of his political party ,the All Progressives Congress, APC, he had sent a report to the then president, Muhammadu Buhari on how some retired Generals and foreigners were stealing the country’s mineral resources, stressing that all his efforts came to no purpose.

In a similar disposition, in December 2023, the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, who is believed to be President Bola Tinubu’s close ally, had at a budget defence at the National Assembly, also raised the alarm on the deep involvement of “powerful Nigerians” in illegal mining and sponsorship of terrorism in different parts of the country. Alake said that government was “identifying them with both kinetic and non-kinetic means”. Till date, no one has been named, let alone brought to book. It is worrisome that Oshiomhole would be alerting Nigerians on this same issue over 14 months after Alake’s media briefing simply shows that even Tinubu, like his predecessor, has been unwilling or unable to rise to the occasion as Commander-in-Chief. If two presidents could not tackle this problem with all the powers at their disposal, it is understandable why the situation would continue to linger.

It is widely believed that the authorities are not willing to step on ‘big toes’ reaping well from these mining activities which is at the detriment of the nation. There is a powerful cartel or ring in the sector that makes “offenders” intractable. It might not require more than a passing investigation to reveal the identities of those concerned. What is perhaps lacking is the will power to do the needful.

Stakeholders worry that the government is always very eager to deploy the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and Civil Defence Corps to destroy artisanal refineries in the creeks, while killing and arresting the operators. The same eagerness has not been deployed against illegal miners in the North where insecurity has become almost intractable for the past 16 years.

Therefore, we call on the federal government to take decisive actions, and confront the evil forces robbing Nigeria maximum benefits of its vast solid minerals endowment.

A situation where a handful of “big men” plunder the resources of the nation unchecked is totally unacceptable. When an anomaly like this prevails for so long, it is often the case that powerful people inside the machinery of government are also involved in the plunder.

The culprits should be immediately named, shamed and prosecuted.

We counsel that would-be investors in the mineral sector should follow the lawful process and obtain the requisite permits.

Apart from curtailing the loss of revenue, the proper management of the sector would ensure a strict compliance to sustainable environmental practice.

IDPs Hit Record High Of 83.4m

0

A record 83.4 million people have been forced to flee from their homes, fuelled by an increase in disasters and conflict, the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, has said.

The UN migration agency in its 2025 Global Report on Internal Displacement yesterdzday said the number of people living in internal displacement had more than doubled since 2018.

Internally displaced people are those who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of conflict, violence, or disasters and who have not crossed an internationally recognised State border.

IOM said the 83.4 million IDPs were scattered across 117 countries and territories at the end of 2024.

“These figures are a clear warning: without bold and coordinated action, the number of people displaced within their own countries will continue to grow rapidly” said Amy Pope, Director-General of IOM.

The report said the recent rise in conflicts worldwide, particularly in Sudan, the Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, Ukraine and Palestine, had pushed millions more into displacement.

It added to the tens of millions who already lived in protracted displacement in countries such as Afghanistan, Colombia, Syria and Yemen.

The report showed that the number of people displaced due to disasters had risen massively, climbing from 26.8 million in 2023 to 45.8 million in 2024.

“The number of disaster displacements in 2024 was nearly double the annual average of the past decade”, IOM said in a new report issued by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, IDMC.

Almost 30 countries and territories have reported unprecedented disaster displacement, with cyclones accounting for more than one in two people forced from their homes.

The United States alone made up about one in four of those displaced globally by disasters.

With the frequency, intensity and duration of weather hazards continuously worsening owing to climate change, there was little to suggest that the trend would not continue, IOM said.

“This report is a call for preventive action, to use data and other tools to anticipate displacement before it happens and for the humanitarian and development sectors to work together with governments to develop longer-term solutions to prevent displacement”, Ms Pope stressed.

Displacement caused by conflict and violence remains high and continues to be a major cause for displacement, although it did decrease slightly in 2024, compared to the previous 12 months, according to the report.

More than 20 million conflict-related displacements have been recorded, and almost half of these stem from Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“These latest numbers prove that internal displacement is not just a humanitarian crisis; it’s a clear development and political challenge that requires far more attention than it currently receives”, Alexandra Bilak, an IOM official, said.

“The cost of inaction is rising, and displaced people are paying the price,” Bilak, who is IOM’s Director of Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, added. NAN

2027: Ikom Township Endorses Senator Eteng Williams, Praises His Representation

0

By Blessing Otobong-gabriel

The people of Yakurr nation, across 13 council wards have unanimously backed Senator Eteng Jonah Williams for a second term, praising his effective representation and transformative leadership.

Senator Williams is receiving endorsements for his 2027 senatorial ambition, particularly from Ikom Township and Yakurr nation.

According to a report from the Central Progressive Initiative for Senator Eteng Jonah for 2027, these achievements have earned him recognition and support from his constituents, who believe his leadership has brought significant development to Cross River Central.

The report reads, “do not be deceived by social media rants. Let no whisper, no backdoor rumour, nor any politically engineered falsehood shake this unyielding truth. Senator Eteng Jonah Williams is a man dearly and deeply loved by his people.

“I stood witness, I witnessed it with my own eyes yesterday at the Central Progressive Initiative (CPI) event. What unfolded was nothing short of a political homecoming, a thunderstorm of cheers, and a stampede of love. The atmosphere was electric, supercharged with the energy of thousands who came not out of obligation, but out of devotion. If anyone still doubts the affection the people have for the *Distinguished Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, they need only recall the sights and sounds of that unforgettable day”.

According to the report, “the very moment he arrived, the air changed. There was no mistaking it: the people of the Central rose to receive their own. The applause, the chants, the uncontainable emotion, this was not orchestrated. This was love in its purest political expression. Say what you will about Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, but deny him the love of his people? Never”.

The report says, Indeed, the Senator remains a study in contrast, simple, humble, and quietly impactful. His simplicity is often misunderstood in a political climate that rewards noise over nuance. But those who know, truly know, understand that this very humility is his strength. It is this grounding in the reality of his people’s needs that has made him not just a leader, but a servant.

“What I saw was genuine, unshakable support. Not rented crowds or plastic endorsements, but the raw power of representation done right. You cannot manufacture this kind of devotion. And no amount of slander or spin can stand against it”.

“Let this be clear; Senator Eteng Jonah Williams is the Central. The Central is Senator Eteng Jonah Williams. There is no space, no room, no vacancy in 2027. The people have decided, and they will not be moved”.

“What struck me most were the reactions from his detractors. Faces contorted in disbelief. The panic in their eyes. The tremble in their confidence. They came expecting weakness, but met a tidal wave of affirmation instead. They witnessed a movement they can neither deny nor dismantle. Their discomfort spoke volumes, because love like this can’t be faked, and loyalty like this can’t be forced.

“So let us not waste time debating the obvious. The road to 2027 is not open; it is already paved. It leads straight back to the Senate chambers, with Distinguished Senator Eteng Jonah Williams seated where he rightfully belongs.”

57 Children Died Of Hunger In Gaza – Official

0

Fifty-seven children  died from the effects of malnutrition during the ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip, a representative of the World Health Organisation, WHO, said, citing Palestinian Health ministry.

WHO’s Representative in the Palestinian Territories, Rik Peeperkorn, said in a video call that the UN organisation has not yet verified these figures.

However, he noted that  WHO has observed an increase in malnourished children.

In connection with this, he reported  many young patients with pneumonia and gastrointestinal diseases.

“You normally don’t die from starvation, you die from diseases associated with it,” he said.

From  WHO’s headquarters in Geneva, it was stated that in recent weeks, more than 57 children may have already died due to the food crisis.

Since the beginning of March, the Israeli military has not allowed aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip.

The armed forces accused the Palestinian extremist organisation, Hamas of selling aid supplies at inflated prices to the suffering population and using the proceeds to pay for their fighters and weapons.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO, warned at the beginning of the week of an escalating famine in the coastal strip.

A recent analysis  indicated that the entire population of the Gaza Strip, around 2.1 million people, are affected by acute food insecurity.

Of these, 244,000 people are already suffering from famine, FAO said. dpa/NAN

Kebbi, UNICEF, Canada Partner To Improve Primary Healthcare

Kebbi State government, United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and Global Affairs Canada, GAC, are  partnering to improve health indices, especially primary healthcare and community system in Kebbi.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Yunusa Musa-Ismail, made this known at a two-day engagement meeting in Birnin Kebbi, yesterday.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the meeting was organised by UNICEF, funded by Global Affairs Canada,  to enhance access to gender-responsive sexual and reproductive health, maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition services.

Musa-Ismail said government had appreciated GAC for selecting Kebbi as one of the three states  to benefit from the initiative.

He said “I assure you that we will do everything humanly possible to support and promote healthcare  at all levels.

“The state government provided facilities to 14 healthcare centres last year, as the 500 health workers  recruited would be trained to ensure maximum benefit and effective service delivery.”

He reaffirmed  government’s commitment to ensure a successful implementation of the intervention, adding that it would develop templates.

The commissioner urged the participants to carefully study the plan to avoid making mistakes and ensure strict compliance to achieve the objectives.

Earlier, the Chief Field Officer, Sokoto Field Office of UNICEF, Mr Michael Juma said the health indicators in the state require a lot of rethink.

He added that nutrition, which is critical for child development, remains high, with early marriage also high.

According to him, the delivery of healthcare in the 21st century is not what it used to be, saying there is the need for a paradigm shift.

He said “we are, therefore, targeting more than 2.6 million women and children across Kebbi, Bauchi and Kaduna States, in an initiative to address the challenges of adolescent pregnancy, malnutrition and anemia.

“The initiative seeks to empower women and adolescents to claim their health rights and increase accountability in service delivery.”

He described the programme as a demonstration of Kebbi’s commitment to ensure equitable and quality healthcare for the people NAN

From CHARLES ONYEKWERE, Enugu

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has charged Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to adopt President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.

Ohanaeze also urged South East citizens to align with the political leadership of the Minister of Works, David Umahi as President  Tinubu embarks on  official visit to Abia State on May 23 to inaugurate the Port Harcourt Road project in Aba.

The body commended Governor Otti for his remarkable achievements in the completion of the Port Harcourt road project, an endeavour that has languished in neglect for over 15 years.

In a joint statement issued yesterday by the factional Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro and the National Spokesperson, Chief Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze  stated that it is indeed a testament to his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development and progress of Abia State.

It said the president’s state visit presents an invaluable opportunity for Otti to align Abia State with President Tinubu’s overarching vision and policies at the national level, adding that such alignment promises to usher in greater prosperity not only for Abia State, but for the entire Igbo Nation.

The statement reads: “ln the light of the aforementioned, Ohanaeze Ndigbo earnestly calls on Governor  Otti to summon his moral fortitude and emulate the commendable example set by the Anambra State governor, Charles Soludo.
