Minimum Wage Standoff: An Ill Wind

0

Organised  Labour, has announced its decision to embark on an indefinite nationwide industrial action today, June 3 over the failure of the Federal Government to conclude and pass into law a new National Minimum Wage Act, and its refusal to reverse the electricity tariff hike from N225/kwh to N65/kwh.

Shortly after their meeting with the Federal Government on the negotiation of a new minimum wage, Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress ,NLC, Joe Ajaero and the Trade Union Congress ,TUC, Festus Osifo, said their meeting with government representatives further demonstrated the meanness and apparent contempt with which the Nigerian state holds the demands of Nigerian workers.

They were piqued by the situation whereby no top personality was present on the side of the government with the appropriate authority to commit to any outcome, saying that it was indicative that the government was not sincere with the process.

The labour leadership specifically noted that no governor was present at the meeting, just as Ministers were absent except the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who doubles as a conciliator.

As a result, the trade unions announced the decision to proceed with an indefinite nationwide industrial action, which they stressed, was hinged on the persistent lack-lustre stance of the government.

The labour leaders alleged that there had been no significant progress or commitment from the government despite the ultimatum issued since May 1.

Addressing the electricity tariff hike, the labour leaders alleged that the government had refused to reverse the hike from N225/kwh to N65/kwh as demanded and refused to consult stakeholders before the tariff increase.

“Nigerian workers, who are the backbone of our nation’s economy, deserve fair and decent wages that reflect the current economic reality. It is disheartening that despite our repeated calls and the clear ultimatum issued, the government continues to neglect its responsibility to the workforce. It has, rather than engage in a dialogue, persistently raised its attack dogs to seek to denigrate and intimidate trade union leaders”, they said.

The labour unions stressed the need for the government to prioritise the people’s welfare at all times.

They noted that the electricity tariff hike had worsened the living conditions of citizens, denying them the right to decent living.

In light of its unmet demands, the unions issued a notice of commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike to the Federal Government.

They called on all their affiliates and state councils, civil society organisations ,CSOs, market men and women and the general populace to prepare for a decisive action.

However, government has said the demand by the Organised Labour was outrageous as paying over N600,000 minum wage beyond affordability and could further cripple the already fractured economy.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, aligning with the unions has called on Bola Tinubu-led administration to accede to their demands.

In a statement its president, Pedro Obi, NANS stood in solidarity with the labour unions in their call for an increase in the national minimum wage.

While citing current economic hardship, the student body noted that the NLC demand is justified.

While we agree that inflation, the rising cost of living, and the continuous devaluation of the Naira have made it increasingly difficult for many families to meet their basic needs as cited by the various anti-government groups, the demand of over N494, 000 minimum wage at this time would be too lofty a demand. From a paltry N30,000 to N60,000 agreed to by the government, it follows that  there is a ground shifted and there are prospects to reach a meeting.

However, we urge the Labour to go ahead with further talks to up the ante beyond government’s position but we see its demand as too stuck-up and unlikely to see the light of day given the fact in the public space that the government is battling to keep this bleeding economy afloat.

Importantly, the Organised Labour and the FG should return to negotiation and get what is plausible given the parlous state of the economy which has become too tardy in the hands of the government.

Soldiers Killing: Troops Raid Abia Communities, Arrest Residents

0

Troops of the Nigerian Army have raided a handful of communities in Abia State, following the killing of five soldiers in Aba.

The soldiers were killed on May 30 by gunmen who were reportedly enforcing the sit-at-home directive of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint in Obikabia junction in Aba Local Government Area, killing the soldiers.

On Friday, the army said it would avenge the killing of the soldiers.

A resident of Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government Area, who pleaded anonymity, said military personnel extended their search for the killers to other neighbouring areas around Aba.

The witness said soldiers “have taken over” his community while shooting “sporadically in the air.”

He added that the soldiers arrested people, and several residents fled the community.

Ever since soldiers were killed in Aba, Abia State has been in tension. In Isiala-Ngwa, where I reside, soldiers have taken over the place, arresting and shooting sporadically in the air,” the resident told newsmen.

“They said two of the soldiers there killed during the sit-at-home enforcement are indigenes of Isiala-Ngwa North. As I speak, my community is deserted. People have run to neighbouring villages to seek refuge. Government should act fast to save the situation. The heavy presence of the military is very intimidating. It has grounded commercial activities here.

“Aba is the commercial hub of the south-east. Something fast needs to be done to douse this tension and forestall further killings and destruction of properties.”

Another resident in Osisioma community in Abia, who also pleaded anonymity, added that soldiers had been patrolling the area and arresting youths in the area.

The witness also said the presence and activities of the military have halted commercial activities in the community.

“Many youths of Osisioma have been arrested since Thursday, and as I speak, the community is deserted. There is a heavy presence of military men, and this has halted commercial activities because everyone is afraid to come out, let alone go to the market. This is terrible,” the resident said.

Efforts to reach Oyema Nwachukwu, the army spokesperson, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.

Independent National Electoral Commission, Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu recently said the damaged facilities in the Edo office would be replaced before the Sept. 21 governorship election.

Yakubu said this during an on the spot assessment of the level of damage done to its facilities by the flood disaster occasioned by torrential rain in Benin on May 24.

The flood disaster destroyed some voter enrollment machines already configured for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

Speaking after the inspection of the facilities, Yakubu said he was in Benin to assess the level of damage with a view to immediately proffer solutions to whatever problems that has arose from the disaster.

He said the flood disaster would not hinder the smooth conduct of the governorship election in the state, adding that the commission would do an assessment of what was damaged and respond appropriately.

He expressed joy that no life was lost to the flood.

“This is not a regular visit. We are here to see what happened to our facilities after the flooding that occurred on Friday, May 24.

“I came here with the Director of ICT because some machines were destroyed and I also came with the federal controller of works because he would be helping us to address the flooding problems in and around the INEC office in Benin.

“Providing working equipment and ensuring a conducive work environment is as crucial as paying salaries.

“So we will ensure that we fix the damaged facilities before the election”, he said.

The INEC chairman also disclosed that the CVR exercise would continue in spite of the damage caused by the flood disaster.

He, however, described the turnout of registrants as impressive, stressing that the damaged facilities poses no threat to the ongoing CVR and election.

“We took proactive measure to ensure that the CVR was not affected by calling for additional resources from neighboring states since INEC was one national body.

According to him, the present Commission has enough experience in conducting governorship election and this is the third governorship election we will be conducting in Edo since 2016.

Earlier, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Anugbum Onuoha thanked the Chairman for being proactive in responding to the disaster.

Lagos Now Competes With African Countries, Says Sanwo-Olu’s Aide

0

In its quest for growth and development in Lagos, as well as making life more comfortable for residents, Lagos State is now competing with countries in Africa and not states in Nigeria.

This was disclosed yesterday during a live interview on the Breakfast Xtra programme on News Central Television by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile.

Akosile said that is due to the remarkable achievements of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in many sectors in line with the THEMES+ developmental agenda, Lagos is now being compared with countries like Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa and others by many people in the areas of infrastructural development, social contract with the citizens and other dividends of democracy.

Speaking on Governor Sanwo-Olu’s government, Akosile said the incumbent administration has delivered laudable infrastructural projects and dividends of democracy to improve the standard of living of millions of Lagos residents in the last five years.

Akosile said the administration has records of key achievements in the areas of Traffic Management and Transportation; Health and Environment; Education and Technology; Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy; Entertainment and Tourism, and Security and Governance, as well as ensuring inclusion in government, which are integral parts of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s THEMES+ developmental agenda.

He said, “Everything he (Governor Sanwo-Olu) has done is key and paramount to the living standard of Lagosians. All the areas that we have touched on in the last five years are key. Do you remember what the COVID did to us in the world? Do you want to talk about how Mr. Governor tackled COVID-19 head-on? How he rescued Nigeria and not just Lagos. In fact, he helped some neighbouring countries around us, like Ghana, Benin, and the rest of them, curtailed the spread of COVID-19 in the region. That is a monumental and huge achievement, and it shot us up in the global rankings.

“With other health initiatives of the Governor and the current administration, Lagos State is occupying an enviable space within the African rankings of the 10 best health facilities in Africa. What that tells us is that we are not competing with states in Nigeria; we are competing with countries in Africa.

“This is what a lot of people don’t take note of when they are comparing. They don’t compare Lagos with states; they compare Lagos with countries. They compare us with South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt, and those are countries. When people compare our rail projects, they compare us with Ethiopia, whereas Ethiopia is a sovereign country and Lagos is a state among 36 states. That shows that Lagos is not here to joke”.

Abiodun: Five Years Of Governance Challenging, Beautiful Experience Ever

0

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the past five years of his administration as challenging, but added that his faith in God had brought the victory he desired.

Speaking during his 64th Birthday and 5th Year Thanksgiving Service held in his honour at the Ogun State Government House Chapel, Oke-Igbein, Abeokuta, on Sunday, Governor Abiodun recalled his journey to power despite all odds, attributing his victory to God Almighty.

He said: “The process through which I emerged as Governor was a very unusual one; one in which my predecessor who was in the same party with me was fighting me and campaigning for another person in another party, and I will sit down and ask myself, ‘Baba God, this is very unusual, why do I have to go through so much to assume this office?’ And then I will answer myself that it is because God wants to take that glory.

“The last five years of governance over the state of Ogun for me has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. It’s been extremely turbulent, it’s been very challenging, particularly, it has been rancorous. But the most important thing is that in all of this, God has given us victory”.

Gov Abiodun said his government was taking giant steps to reshape the economy of the state and that the steps were yielding results.

One of such steps, according to him, is the plan to make Ogun an oil producing State, as the Ministry of Petroleum Resources would soon begin oil exploration in the state.

“Only on Friday, the leadership of the Ministry of Petroleum led by the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources (oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, was here with three others and the chairman of Shell to make an announcement that they would soon begin to drill oil in Ogun State”,  he said.

Prince Abiodun also seized the opportunity to respond to comments by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, in the last general election, Ladi Adebutu, on the Sagamu-Iperu road project.

Adebutu had criticised the 8-kilometer Sagamu-Iperu road project of the state government.

The Governor said his focus was to continue the positive trajectory of the Gateway State and not to dwell on the submission of a man who could not see the over 600km of roads across the length and breadth of Ogun State done by his administration.

Prince Abiodun said he had learnt not to respond to people who had developed the habit of barking whenever they are no longer in the spotlight.

Ohanaeze Calls For Justice Over Killing Of Soldiers In Aba

0

In the wake of the killings of the Nigerian Army personnel of ‘Operation Udo Ka’ in Aba, Abia State on May 30, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called for justice.

It also extended its ‘deepest condolences’ to the Nigerian Army and the families of the fallen soldiers.

A statement by the organisation’s Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said it received the news with heavy hearts and profound sorrow.

The statement said, among others, “We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy. The loss of these gallant soldiers in this regrettable and tragic incident is not just unacceptable; it is an act of cowardice.

“These brave warriors, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation, were sons of Igbo land. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face justice, for the blood of innocent Igbo soldiers cries out for retribution”.

It added, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo will invoke the aid of all Igbo gods and deities to ensure that those responsible for this unspeakable deed are brought to account.

“We vehemently condemn the renewed spate of killings and attacks in Abia, particularly in the once peaceful city of Aba.

“For seven years, Aba had been a beacon of tranquility; it is disheartening to witness this peace shattered. We urgently implore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and quell the rising tensions in the South-east.

“The South-east governors seem overwhelmed by the security challenges, and immediate action is needed to restore calm and order”.

As we navigate this difficult moment, Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls for a return to non-violent and peaceful avenues of expression for Biafra agitators.

“Declarations of sit-at-home campaigns only serve to sow discord and strife. The regrettable killings of soldiers in Aba on May 30, 2024, not only hamper efforts toward securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu but also cast a shadow over prospects for peace and justice”, it added.

The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Isiguzoro, urged the Nigerian Army to target the perpetrators while safeguarding innocent civilians and the citizens of Aba.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Nigerian Army and the bereaved families, as we beseech divine strength and resilience upon them during this trying time.

“May peace, justice, and healing prevail amidst this grief-stricken hour, as we seek unity and assurance in the face of such profound loss”, it added.

Kebbi: One Year Of Idris Unprecedented, Says Jirgi

0

Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed Jirgi is a seasoned journalist and

Managing Director, Triple CEE Media Ltd, Abuja.

An astute politician, he was a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council Media and Publicity Committee in the last general elections and former

Special Advisor, Media and Publicity, to the late Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim of Yobe State. In this interview, he takes a look at the one year in office of Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, saying the man popularly called Kauran Gwandu has performed exceptionally. MUYIWA OYINLOLA presents the excerpts:

How do you assess the performance of Dr. Nasir Idris one year after assuming office as Kebbi State governor?

Well, I would describe his performance as unprecedented.

I say this because his tenure has witnessed remarkable progress in various sectors, particularly in agriculture, education, and healthcare. Under his leadership, Kebbi State is experiencing a remarkable transformation, making it a shining example of progress and development.

How has the state fared in the last one year in terms of youth development?

Youth development is a critical sector under the administration of His Excellency Dr. Nasir Idris. As a matter of fact, he has great passion for investing in the  youths who are the future leaders  for the development of the state.

Through the  Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, a number of programmes have been designed for the benefit of the teeming youths in the state; in line with the provisions of the National Youth Policy of the Federal Government such as skills acquisition, youth empowerment scheme, youth, foreign, National and Local sponsorship, among others.

There is going to be collaboration with both local or foreign NGOs  as well as ministries, agencies and parastatals willing to assist in the empowerment or youth training in trade, agriculture and other sectors.

As I speak with you,

Kebbi State Government under his leadership has concluded plans to construct nine skills acquisition centers across the state with a view to harnessing the abundant youths’ talents to make them self employed.

In view of paucity of funds in the nation’s vault, states have started looking inwards to better their lots, what ingenuity has the state brought to bear in this direction?

A lot. One of such is by  improving internally generated revenue, IGR, towards attaining even socio-economic development of the state.

The state government is taking measures through land reforms, small claims courts and other means to generate revenue for the state.

The state is also taking advantage of its conducive and investment opportunities to attract investors.

How is the governor handling the current economic meltdown ravaging the country?

The state government is offering operational support to firms, and I can tell you that as at today, not less than 613 firms have received operational support grants from the state government.

The State Ministry of Budget also facilitated the coordination of World Bank supported programmes in the state. Chief amongst this is the coordination of the NG-CARES Programme for Results tagged ,KAURA CARES, under 4 major platforms.

This money was further released to continue the programme implementation during which beneficiaries were given access to livelihood support, food security interventions, grants for poor and vulnerable households as well as grants for Small and Medium Enterprises.

Now, let’s take a look at pensioners whose plights have become a major concern both at the federal and state levels. How is the governor handling it?

Thank you. It is really a major concern and pitiful that people who have served at both federal and state levels go through untold hardships and live in penury.

But luckily in Kebbi State, Kauran Gwandu, Governor Idris is ensuring that the state is different. As a matter of fact, he recently approved over N241m gratuity to 91 retirees, over N34m for the payment of gratuity to 91 retired workers from November to December, 2023. The governor has also approved N34,662,964:80 for adjustment of disparity in pension for 2012/2013 retirees in the state.

The present administration in the atate under the leadership of Gov. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu has spend over 21 billion Naira on palliatives and livelihood improvement initiative. The amount covered distribution of solar powered irrigation pumps, fertilisers and financial support to those in need.

He is very active, very generous.

He is running an open and all inclusive government.

He openly said ‘Come to my office or personal residence any time with Constructive criticism and good ideas on how to move Kebbi forward’

He has extended the hands of friendship to the opposition parties in building Kebbi State right from his swearing-in.

With listening ears

He is carrying everyone along in the task of governing Kebbi.

Enugu Govt To Reposition Gaming, Lotto Commission

0

From CHARLES ONYEKWERE, ABAKILIKI

Enugu State government is set to reposition Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission for effective regulation, responsible gaming and lottery eco-system.

Executive Secretary of the commission, Prince Arinze Arum told newsmen yesterday in Enugu that the repositioning was to ensure that residents are not shortchanged as they participate in gaming and lottery activities.

Arum said the commission is out to see that both gaming and lottery (lotto) companies abide by laid down procedures and agreement with members of the public that participate in playing the games and being part of a lottery.

He said all functions of the commission would be fully digitalised as part of government’s vision to reposition the commission to meet anticipated state economic growth from $4 billion to $30 billion.

The executive secretary said the commission had embarked on advocacy for attitudinal change among residents on some negative perception against positive gaming culture.

Arum noted that the commission is also taking a wide-reach sensitisation to check “gaming addiction” on the part of youths.

According to him, the commission is implementing a clear cut confidence renewal strategy on getting more people on board as it concerns positive attitude towards gaming and lottery meant to uplift the livelihood of residents positively.

He also said gaming and lottery have huge potentials for youth employment, adding that there are potentials to create thousands of gaming retail outlets (umbrella-tents, kiosks and shop outlets) within neighbourhoods and communities.

On the forthcoming international conference on gaming and lottery; he said gaming companies from the United States of America and South Africa had indicated interest to fully participate in the one-day conference, which is the first of its kind in the South-East.
