From Richard Akintade, Osogbo

Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, yesterday paid a one-day working visit to the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, in Lokoja, Kogi State capital.

On the occasion, he inaugurated several landmark projects aimed at enhancing the operational capability and safety standards of Nigeria’s inland waterways.

In his address, Oyetola emphasised the critical role of the maritime sector in improving Nigeria’s balance of trade, strengthening the naira, and creating employment.

“The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is determined to maximize the comparative advantages our maritime resources present”, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, he stated.

A key achievement celebrated during the visit was the long-awaited Water Transportation Code. This new regulatory framework is expected to significantly standardize water transportation, minimize accidents, and provide a structured environment for potential investors.

The Minister commended NIWA’s management for their efforts in bringing this vital code to fruition.

The projects inaugurated include fifteen boats of varying capacities and purposes, designed to enhance surveillance, safety enforcement, and emergency response on Nigeria’s waterways. Notably, the fleet comprises three surveillance boats, five safety enforcement boats, a gun patrol boat, a 62-seater passenger boat as a pilot scheme to replace traditional wooden canoes, three water ambulances, and two hydrographic survey boats equipped with multi-beam echo sounders.

“These initiatives fulfill our commitment to ensuring our inland waterways are well-utilized for both cargo shipment and passenger transportation”, Minister Oyetola remarked.

He also pledged to address both internal and external challenges impeding NIWA’s operations, ensuring continuous improvement and expansion of navigable waterways.

While discussing the ministry’s future plans, the Minister revealed the goal to increase navigable waterways by at least 2,000 kilometers through comprehensive dredging. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to finalize the disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund ,CVFF, which aims to support the development of the maritime sector.

The Minister called upon the private sector to invest in and partner with the government, leveraging the numerous opportunities within the maritime industry to foster sustainable development.

“We will continue to create an enabling environment, develop supportive policies, and offer necessary assistance to grow the Inland Waterways segment”, he assured.

Speaking on the occasion, Kogi Governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, represented by his deputy, Comrade Salifu Joel, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing the right person as NIWA’s MD.

He further said “When we were coming here, our people asked where we were going, I told them we were going to a NIWA’s event. They asked, ‘which one is NIWA?’ This means until now, no one knows NIWA. But we know NIWA now because the President has appointed the right person that is making impact”.

In his welcome address, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, the Managing Director/CEO of NIWA, expressed gratitude for the Honourable Minister’s support and guidance in driving organizational reforms and enhancing operational efficiency. He outlined the agency’s proactive measures, including the implementation of education grants, promotion letters, and medical packages for staff, to boost morale and productivity.

Mr. Oyebamiji also highlighted NIWA’s initiatives in public engagement, emergency response, and enforcement, culminating in the launch of the first phase of water marshal initiatives. These efforts, coupled with the unveiling of the Transportation Code, he said, underscore NIWA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of inland water transportation.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary,  Mr. Oloruntola Olufemi, commended the NIWA management for the feat achieved so far and encouraged it to do more. He also assured NIWA of the ministry’s support in actualising its mandate.

After the Minister’s address, he officially inaugurated the newly-completed projects, marking a significant step forward in the development of Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure.

By Paul Effiong, Abuja

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas has reiterated that any adjustments made in the electricity tariffs must be fair, equitable and beneficial to all the stakeholders.

He made the submission while declaring open a special public hearing on the increase in electricity tarrifs organized by the joint House committees on power, commerce, national planning and delegated legislation on Tuesday in Abuja.

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently hiked the tariff, a development which sparked widespread discontent and attracted strong opposition from different quarters of the country.

Represented by the deputy speaker Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Speaker Abbas said the public hearing was to ultimately examine all issues of concern with a view to proffering solutions.

He said: “The fears expressed by many are valid – that such a sharp increase in electricity tariffs will only exacerbate the economic hardships already faced by our people. There are genuine concerns that higher utility bills resulting from this tariff hike could have a ripple effect on operational costs for businesses, potentially leading to increased prices for goods and services

“Electricity as we know, is not just a commodity; it is a lifeline for many households and businesses across our nation. Any significant rise in tariff could have far-reaching consequences for our economy and the livelihoods of our people. Therefore, it is essential that we carefully assess all factors before making any decisions that may affect the affordability and accessibility of electricity for our citizens. It is imperative that we engage in constructive dialogue to address these issues and ensure that any adjustments made are fair, transparent, and ultimately beneficial to all parties involved.

“It is in the light of the foregoing that the House convened this public hearing. As representatives of the Nigerian people, it is our duty to carefully consider the implications of such policies on our constituents’well-being and livelihoods.

“Our goal is to ensure that any adjustments made to electricity tariffs are fair, equitable, and ultimately beneficial to all stakeholders involved.

“We must strive to strike a balance that safeguards the interests of consumers while also enabling sustainable growth and development within the energy sector.”

Expressing the willingness of the House to continue to work with the executive arm of government, Speaker Abbas enjoined the stakeholders to make valuable submissions that will help the parliament to make an informed decision on the issue.

“I urge all stakeholders present here today to engage in constructive dialogue and provide valuable insights that will guide us in finding a balanced solution to this pressing issue. Let us work together towards ensuring that electricity remains affordable for all Nigerians while also aupporting the growth and stability of our energy sector. Let us use this public hearing as an opportunity to listen to all stakeholders, understand their perspectives, and work towards finding a sustainable and equitable resolution to this pressing issue.

“I want to emphasize our commitment to working closely with the executive to transform the Nigerian power sector into a model of efficiency and sustainability as outlined in our Legislative Agenda. We are dedicated to providing legislative support to the efforts of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s Administration in reforming the power sector by addressing all legal and legislative impediments accordingly”, he said.

Speaker Abbas however frowned at the failure of the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to honour the invitation of the committees and make their respective presentations.

He urged them to submit their memoranda to the secretariat of the committees, saying that positive results can only be made when all the stakeholders come into a partnership.

From Nwogha Ndubuisi, Abakaliki

The people of Nkomoro autonomous community in Ezza North local government area of Ebonyi state have protested in show of their rejection of Barr Jacob Nwakpa as Eze-elect of the community.

The community who carried out demonstration at Okpokeze Nkomoro village square carried placards of different inscriptions calling for the election of the traditional stool.

Addressing newsmen, the Nkomoro Youth Assembly national president, Mr Peter Agbom, and acting town union president, Mr Obiora Ezaka stated that the acclaimed Eze-elect was not elected by the people, hence, would not rule them as their traditional ruler.

According to Agbom, “We appreciate and respect His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Builder Francis O. Nwifuru, the indefatigable governor of Ebonyi State, for his political dexterity and maturity in dousing the political intrigues, tension, and bickering in the Local government elections in the State. The amicable resolution and balancing of competing interest is a further testimony to the governor’s wisdom and fatherly disposition.

” No doubt, onwa Oferekpe has bestowed Ebonyians with great hope for the future while delivering immediate dividends of good governance to last till that future. We salute his efforts and pledge total commitment to his administration.

Also speaking,Mr Okohu Paulinus the community secretary and Obiora Ezaka, acting town union president said the candidate, Barr Nwakpa who is currently facing court trials and other contestants are yet to stand for any election as one of the prerequisites to be nominated for the position urging the state governor, Francis Nwifuru for his intervention.

“That we reject in the strongest term the attempted and remotely manipulated efforts to impose a traditional ruler on Nkomoro by external elements, masterminded by Nwakpa Ikpenyi’s family.

“That at no place, time or forum within any inch of Nkomoro land was Barr. Jacob Nwakpa nominated or elected as Ezeogo of Nkomoro Community.

” It was strange and an affront on the integrity of the Judicial system that Mr. Chikodili Nomeh would assume authority (under the guise of Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee) to pass a resolution over a matter pending in court without regard to a subsisting order of court restraining parties to maintain the status quo.

“We reinstate our trust in the ongoing judicial process while we vehemently refuse and would resist any further attempt to impose a traditional ruler upon the good people of Nkomoro without a free and transparent election guided in a participatory processes.

However, some of the aspirants, Mr Joseph Ogayi, a retired police officer, and prophet Igwe Cletus who spoke with our Correspondent, explained that all contestants are of Oriuzor kindred and appealed to Ebonyi state government to visit the community and conduct free, fair and transparent election for the interest of the state.

It could be recall that Ebonyi State House of Assembly committee on Public Petition, Justice and Judiciary led by Hon Chikaodili Nomeh last week claimed to had resolved and authenticated the nomination of Chief Jacob Nwakpa as Eze-elect of Nkomoro autonomous community

Reps To Intervene In Plateau State House Of Assembly Crisis

0

By Paul Effiong, Abuja

The House of Representatives has pledged it readiness to wade into the ongoing political crisis rocking the Plateau State House of Assembly.

This followed a motion of urgent national importance moved during plenary yesterday by the former deputy speaker and a lawmaker representing
Wase Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Ahmed Wase.

It would be recalled that on April 2024, the Speaker, Plateau state House of Assembly, Gabriel Dewan, sworn in nine out of the 16 members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who were declared winners by the Appeal Court.

In his lead motion, Wase recalled that in 2023, the Court of Appeal hearing appeals arising from judgements of the Plateau State Election Tribunal, made decisions which resulted in the nullification of Certificates of Return of 16 sitting members of the Plateau State House of Assembly while it ordered the issuance of new Certificates of Return to the new Members by the Independent National Electoral Commission

The lawmaker further recalled that pursuant to the Provisions of Section 72 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission issued Certificates of Return to the new Members in compliance with the order of the Appeal Court and the Law

He argued that Section 94 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 provides the procedure for the swearing in of newly elected Members of a State House of Assembly.

“Concerned that the current situation, where some of the new Members were selected and sworn-in by the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly while others have not been sworn-in, contradicts the principles of fairness and justice that our electoral laws seek to uphold

Consequently, the motion was generally adopted and the house resolved to ensure that equity, fairness and justice were served on the matter inorder to restore conducive political atmosphere to the tourism state..

“That is the messages we have been carrying on”, Jonathan added.

Earlier, Jonathan said he was at the palace of the Oba to inform him of his forthcoming programme, Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue slated to take place in Benin and to seek his blessings for a successful event.
