Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, says his administration will take proactive steps towards tightening security around the border areas.
Otu who disclosed this yesterday in Calabar while meeting with elders and stakeholders of the state, said the move was critical to security and economic growth of the state.
It would be recalled that Cross River has witnessed rise in illegal mining activities and boundary disputes with its neighbours in the past few years.
The Governor said that his administration would enhance security along the borders for effective boundary monitoring and safety of the citizenry.
Addressing the issue of farmer, herdsmen clashes in Odukpani, Otu said that some of the conflicts were as a result of avoidable misunderstandings.
“We are committed to achieving lasting peace, Cross River people are peaceful and hospital, but our kindness must not be mistaken for weakness.
“I am concerned about the illegal exploitation of our natural resources, we are planning to collaborate with security agencies to ensure stricter enforcement”, he said.
He said that his administration remained committed to protecting the people, and developing sustainable infrastructure to promote public welfare.
“We are constructing roads, hospitals and schools across the state. These infrastructure are needed to support the wellbeing of the people”, he said.
Col. Pam Ogar , Retd, the Leader, Cross River Elders’ Forum, commended Otu for convening the meeting, and described it as well thought-out.
Ogar said that the meeting had enabled the stakeholders to evaluate the developments on critical issues about the state such as boundary disputes and illegal mining, among others.
He urged the government to conduct a headcount of those involved in mining in the state in order to identify and regulate their operations.
“This measure will enable us to prevent potential security breaches resulting from illegal mining activities”, he said.
