It was sweet revenge for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke, as he trounced the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and sitting governor, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola in Saturday’s Osun governorship poll.

Adeleke had almost danced his way to the State Government House four years ago but his slim victory over Oyetola in the election was overturned by the All Progressives Congress, APC, which deployed all tricks in the book.

Both Adeleke and Oyetola had run neck-and-neck, scoring about 255,000 apiece. A rerun poll in a few wards across the state had assured victory for Oyetola with about 423 votes.

But this time around, Adeleke won on the first ballot with a staggering margin compared to his margin of win in 2018 in the first ballot.

To consummate his victory, he won in 17 out of the 30 Local Government Areas while the incumbent governor won in 13 LGAs.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced the results of the governorship election conducted on Saturday, July 16 on local-government-by-local government basis, prelude to the final announcement of the overall result.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said that Adeleke polled 403,371 votes to defeat his closest rival, Oyetola, the candidate of the APC, who scored 375,027 votes.

The PDP won in 17 local government areas, while APC won in 13, he said.

Adeleke’s family is the first family to produce two governors for a state in Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech yesterday, Adeleke commended the people of the state for demonstrating their support for him during the just concluded election in the state.

According to him, “I give praise and adoration to Almighty God. I praise the courage and determination of the good people of Osun State.

“I commend men and women of goodwill, the young and the old. I am overwhelmed by your love and support. Our state has turned a new page. We have launched a landmark path for progress and prosperity for our people.

“It is therefore with strong faith in God and trust in our people that I accept my election as the Governor of Osun State. I pledge my total commitment to the best interest of the state and her people.

“I dedicate this victory to my Late brother, H.E Sen Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke and every indigene of Osun State, and to all my supporters and friends”.

Meanwhile, Oyetola has taken cognisance of the result of the governorship election in the state as announced by the INEC yesterday.

He, however, noted that the party would be responding appropriately after studying the result and consulting with critical stakeholders of the party.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, Gov Oyetola called on his supporters to remain calm, urging the people of the state to go about their businesses without let or hindrance.

The governor also called on security operatives to ensure maintenance of law and order. He has therefore directed security operatives to take adequate charge so as to prevent breakdown of law and order.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Adeleke, over his victory at the poll.

A statement signed by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity said the successful conduct of the election was a testimonial to the maturity and commitment of all stakeholders.

“President Muhammadu Buhari congratulates Senator Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, following victory of the party in Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Osun State.

“With the election over, the President expresses conviction that the people of Osun have expressed their will through the ballot, and the will of the people must always matter and be respected in a democracy.

“President Buhari notes that the successful conduct of the election is a further testimony to the maturity and commitment of all stakeholders  the electoral body, security agencies, political parties, the media, civil society and the electorate- to further strengthen the integrity of the electoral process in the country.

“The President reassures the nation that the commitment of this administration towards having credible elections remains unshaken.”

In the same vein, Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, yesterday, congratulated Adeleke on his victory at the just-concluded Osun State governorship election, saying that the power of the people has again triumphed.

A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that Makinde equally lauded Senator Adeleke, PDP members and Osun State voters for remaining strong and unwavering throughout the electioneering period.

“It is great to have a second PDP flag flying in the South-West and this victory teaches all politicians an important lesson- that truly, power resides with the people.

“The power of the people will continue to triumph, the earlier politicians realise this fact, the better for our democracy”, it noted.

While reacting, a PDP chieftain in the state, Omooba Dotun Babayemi, has described the party’s victory as that for the people of the state who have been subjected to poor governance by the All APC-led administration in the last 12 years.

In a statement issued by his Media Office yesterday, Babayemi while congratulating the party and the people of the state noted that with the triumph of the PDP at the Saturday’s poll, the people have liberated themselves through their votes urging that they should as well continue to support the party by ensuring the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as President at the 2023 elections.

“I want to implore that we don’t rest on our oars until we take over the center by voting for Alhaji  Atiku as President, and our governors as well as lawmakers at federal and state levels. We need these for ease of administration”, he maintained.

Similarly, Ondo State chapter of the PDP in a press statement issue and signed by

Kennedy Ikantu Peretei, the State Publicity Secretary, in the state, noted Nigerians will continue to reject the APC and its candidates for foisting and presiding over unimaginable hunger and frustration in our country.

“The outcome of the Osun State Gubernatorial election is the dress rehearsal for the 2023 general elections. It is the sign and confirmation of a new dawn where bullion van politics will no longer hold sway”, it stated.

Also, the Inter Party Advisory Council, IPAC, in Lagos State, said the outcome of Saturday’s Osun governorship election is a confirmation that votes still count in Nigeria’s electoral system.

The IPAC Chairman in the state, Mr Olusegun Mobolaji made this remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN yesterday in Lagos, while reacting to INEC’s conduct and outcome of the governorship election won by an opposition party.

“The election is a clear indication and confirmation that our votes count and there is no power or government that cannot be unseated.

“I urge Nigerians to see election and democracy as part of the determinant of our destiny and do the needful to be part of electing good leaders that will fix this nation and make us rise again”. Mobolaji said.

On the challenges of vote buying in elections, the IPAC chairman said: “We can overcome the nemesis of vote buying and apathy if we are actually ready to do it”.

According to him, IPAC will not relent in its efforts to sensitise and educate people that democracy and election is the affair of everyone.

“We must work hard to fix this nation through credible elections and good leadership,” Mobolaji said.

In the same vein, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Honourable Ndudi Elumelu has congratulated Sen Adeleke, on his victory during last Saturday’s governorship election.

Honourable Elemelu in a press statement issued made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday said: ‘Your overwhelming defeat of a sitting governor underscores the well-founded confidence and trust the people of Osun State repose in you as the leader with the desired capacity, integrity, humility, love for the people and the political will to lead their state in the right direction.’

According to the statement, the Minority Leader of the House further disclosed that his party’s victory and recovery of the mandate that was stolen from them by the APC in 2018 further reinforces Sen. Adeleke’s popularity and that of the PDP not only in Osun State, but also in the South West geo-political zone and the nation as a whole.

He observed that the indubitable triumph of the PDP over the APC in the Osun governorship election signposts the crushing defeat that awaits the ruling party in the 2023 Presidential election, adding that with the soaring popularity of the PDP presidential candidate, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, victory is assured.
