Ortom Charges Humanitarian Partners To Keep Supporting Benue IDPs

Henry Ibya, Makurdi

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has appealed for continued support of humanitarian partners both Local and International, as well as public spirited individuals and philanthropist to enable his administration cope with the development which has become a daily occurrence.

The Governor who spoke weekend during routine distribution of food and non food items to IDPs across the state, for the month of June at BSEMA headquarters in Makurdi, acknowledged efforts of various donor groups throughout the outbreak of the humanitarian crisis in the state; but noted that the current appeal for support became necessary following fresh attacks on communities by suspected herdsmen which has resulted to increasing number of IDPs in camps on daily basis.

The Governor represented at this months distribution exercise of food and non food items including 600,000 bags of rice, 400,000 cartons of noodles, truck loads of maize, guinea corn, millet and cassava chips across the camps by the executive secretary BSEMA, Dr Emmanuel Shior said in order to cushion the effect of the hardship, the state government has stepped up its monthly distribution of items to carter for the overwhelming number of the Internally Displaced Person’s, IDPs, lamenting that the burden of caring for over two million IDPs both in official and unofficial camps has become increasingly difficult.

Ortom who described as gross injustice by the Federal Government to consistently ignore the humanitarian crisis in Benue State only to give adequate and timely attention and support to the North Eastern states suffering similar attacks said the development was not healthy enough and appealed to the Federal Government to assist the state in taking care of the IDPs as well as work with the Benue State Government to implement the plan it has developed towards returning the IDPs to their ancestral homes.

Speaking in his own capacity, the executive secretary Benue State Emergency Management Agency, BSEMA, Dr Emmanuel Shior commended Benue State Government for not relenting in catering for the welfare of the IDPs in the face of daunting financial challenges.

He equally expressed appreciation to other donor agencies for their assistance during the period and appealed for more support from the international community, philanthropist and public spirited individuals to continue to stand with the state until the humanitarian crisis would be resolved for the displaced persons to return to their ancestral homes.
