Worried by the alarming rate of insecurity especially with the renewed herdsmen killings of the people as well as increased criminal activities and communal clashes across Benue State particularly within the Tiv speaking communities, Governor Samuel Ortom has appealed for unity of purpose among the people in order to usher in the needed development in the State.


Ortom who made the appeal while addressing the opening session of an expanded meeting of stakeholders mainly of Tiv extraction Monday,at the Benue People’s House in Makurdi,a forum discribed by many as a reconciliatory summit to chat the way forward for the state saw in attendance for the first time after the 2019 general election at the Benue Government House, the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, and other personalities such as Iorchia Ayu, Barnabas Gemade, Gabriel Suswam, Orker Jev and Herman Hembe among others.

Briefing journalists after the almost 4 hour meeting which was attended by the Tor Tiv HRM Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and all traditional rulers of Tiv extraction, Ortom expressed happiness with the dignitaries for honoring the invitation which according to him was commendable, irrespective of party affiliations,a development he said has placed the interest of the Tiv Nation above personal gains.

The governor however, expressed worry that the popular identity of the Tiv Nation enjoyed over the years as the fourth largest ethnic nationality in the country was not only threatened but has been gradually replaced with other smaller communities in the country and observed that the earlier the people were able to work in unity to correct their battered image to enable them reclaim their lost dignity among the comity of Nation’s the better for the development of the Tiv Nation.

Ortom, particularly decried the high rate of communal violence across Tiv Land of recent, among other forms of criminality in the face of herdsmen attacks and the hardship being experienced by the people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and warned those who were perpetrating such acts including their sponsors to desists or be ready to face the full wrath of the law no matter how highly placed if found culpable.

According to the governor, the stakeholders forum also identified youths in Tiv Land for being behind most of the crises going on Within the Tiv speaking Local Government Areas but regretted sadly that most at times such youths were shielded by elders in their communities, revealing that stakeholders also resolved not to surrender leadership of the state to the youths which was considered an abominable act even before God.

Ortom,who said the stakeholders also resolved to be proactive on security issues in order not to surrender the state to criminal’s to take over leadership also disclosed that the meeting also resolved to expand security meeting’s to all the local government area’s in the State, the Ward’s and the kindred levels to enable some of the crises to be averted early enough and assured that his administration would henceforth work closely with the traditional institution, stakeholders and all security agencies to ensure that criminality is eliminated in Benue for the development of the state.
