Former President Olusegun Obasanjo will on April 2, inaugurate the newly reconstructed 45 kilometres Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Akara-Alayi-Abiriba road in Abia State.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this while addressing the press on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
The road, which cuts across the three local government areas of Umuahia North, Bende and Ohafia, is currently being fitted with solar lights which is supervised by engineers from the state Ministry of Power and Public Utilities.
“What it means is that when that road is commissioned, when we are driving through that road at night, we will be driving through a road that is wholly lit,” Kanu said.
The commissioner also revealed that about eight roads had been completed and ready for commissioning in Aba, saying they would be commissioned soon.
In another development, Abia State government has announced that only successful candidates who scored 45 percent and above in the recently conducted teachers recruitment Computer-Based Test, CBT, would be invited to an oral interview next week.
“The computer-based test for the recruitment of teachers was concluded last week; the candidates shortlisted for employment will be invited for oral interview next week.
“The cut-off mark will be 45 percent and I believe while maintaining quality, there is the need to ensure that a lot of people are brought into the net as teachers,” the commissioner said.
He said in line with government’s commitment to revolutionise the education sector, Governor Otti paid an unscheduled visit to Abia State University, Uturu, and directed an instant face-lift to be given to the institution’s dilapidated buildings, including the construction of a 5000-capacity students hostel, construction of new Agriculture and Law Faculties, construction of more cafeterias and reconstruction of all the internal roads of the university, among others.
